14.01.2022 Capacity 3 - Purposeful 2 way Communication After a baby falls in love with their caregivers (stage 2) they realise that they can have an impact on them. - When I smile, Mum smiles back... The child then begins to realise that not only can they have an impact on a person, but also on objects. - If I bang this toy, it makes a sound. They realise that they can have an impact on the world - a valuable emotional and cognitive lesson. Two way communication is essential in all human interactions and carries on throughout life. A child at school may reach for a hug and feel loved when they are hugged back. Similarly, if they hurt a child, it will bring that child to tears. Their impact on the world becomes more prevalent each day. Without mastering this step, children cannot form a true sense of who they are. Tips to help your child master this stage. 1. Allow your child to take initiative. Their interests are your first step to meaningful two way communication. 2. Engage in emotionally fulfilling interactions using touch, hearing, smell, vision and movement. 3. View these interactions as opening and closing circles of communication. When a child smiles at you, they are opening the circle, your smile back captures their attention and holds it, when your child acknowledges this and vocalises or gestures back, they are closing this circle of communication. Open - Capture - Close. 4. Your child will open a circle on their own, with their own purpose and intent. Your job is to capture this, build on it and show them that they have in fact met their goal - once this goal is met, your child will close the circle by gesturing, vocalising or letting you know, in their own way that they have received your communication. Ideas IMITATE - Watch closely to the sounds and movements your child makes and imitate them. Play games that will facilitate two way communication e.g hiding something in your hand for them to open. See how many circles you can close. REMEMBER ! This stage sets the foundations on how you child views their value in the world. Follow their lead, show interest, engage, imitate and watch the magic unfold.

01.01.2022 Capacity 5 - Using Symbols and Creating Emotional Ideas A child's ability to form ideas develops through play. The use of toys to create stories, emotional responses and intentions. Mummy bears, feed baby bears, cars race other cars. These ideas form the basis of language development and expansion of words. It begins with labelling or requesting desired toys, to expanding dialogue with the help of their parents. ... The child begins to learn that symbols stand for things. E.g a box they put a doll in and move around symbolises a car. Language is then attributed to this box (car). As they continue to build on this imaginative play, they build on their world of ideas. Eventually, a child manipulates these ideas to achieve their goals and get what they want. They can now call for their mum or dad rather than cry in the hope they will understand. It's now time to help your child express their wants, needs and ideas. You are now their partner in make believe play. Tips to help your child master this stage. 1. Don't soley rely on puzzles, TV, books or structured games to spark your child's imagination. 2. Get on the ground and become an animal character eg. Lion. 3. Engage in long conversations about things of interest to your child. Ideas Chit chat with your child -- see how many circles of communication you can open and close using words, phrases and short sentences. E.g child - "water" parent - "who should get water"? Pretend play -- act out an animal and see how long you can go back and forth with your child in a scenario.
