23.01.2022 El Camino Update In early 2020 we could not have anticipated the challenges which lay before our families, friends and colleagues here at home and around the world. For the amazing OTIS supports and fund raisers this also meant reviewing the much anticipated El Camino trek. However, in the true OTIS spirit we found that in these dreadful circumstances there was also a glimmer of opportunity to re-think our next big adventure and look to some of the most spectacular and ent...icing landscapes in the world - right here in our own beautiful country..and we have. I am delighted to announce that in early 2021 the intrepid Team OTIS will be heading to Western Australia for a Cape to Cape adventure. This new Aussie adventure will not only raise much needed funds to support gifted accommodation to those experiencing breast cancer, but will also support the national economic recovery post bushfire and COVID. The 5-day trek will take our Team OTIS through breath-taking forest and costal scenery across this ever changing landscape including Kilcarnup, Bobs Hollow, Horseshoe Bay, Prevelly and the Margaret River Coast. 20.01.2022 Happy Birthday Jan During June the team celebrated the birthday of one of our long term supporters and property owner, Jan Munz from South Australia. We are humbled to have such truly amazing property owners and wanted to share Jans lovely words which truly capture the spirit of OTIS.... To My Dear Otis Family, Oh my!! What a wondrous surprise greeted me at my front door. The photo only tells a part of the story as there are just heaps of native flowers in the bouquet. I hope it does show my delight! 20.01.2022 Our world is again moving forward! In late March The OTIS Foundation made the heart wrenching decision to postpone stays to protect the safety and wellbeing of our vulnerable guests. As our world slowly shifts back towards socialising, playing and in the future travel the dedicated OTIS team are actively working to plan stays in our retreats and partner accommodation properties from mid-June.... We know this has been a particularly challenging time for many people, especially those in need for a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany an individual breast cancer journey and we are eagerly preparing for a return to full services in the near future. While restrictions are easing, the OTIS Board and operational team will continue to be guided by official advice to ensure a safe environment for our guests, property partners, volunteers, staff and visitors. We are very appreciative of your support and understanding during these unprecedented times and look forward to returning to the office and our new normal in the not too distant future. 10.01.2022 Kathys legacy will help those experiencing breast cancer to find sanctuary and make memories Kathy has always had a kind and caring heart and, whilst not married, family was everything to her and she had a close relationship with her nieces and nephews. Kathy and her sister Karen had a truly special bond and Karen was by her side for the 8 years of her treatment and appointments, Karen recalls that no matter what was happening Kathy faced everything with a smile. With her... love of sewing and knitting Kathy made countless baby cot blankets and beanies for a local and overseas childrens charities. Kathy had a love of music and concerts with a variety of anything from Jimmy Barnes to Il Divo. Kathys sister Karen remembers she would put her music on and sit out on her back deck with a cuppa and a good book to read. Kathys career culminated in her General Manager position at a printing firm in Sandringham, the company she worked with for 32 years. She started as a sales representative but worked hard over the years to attain the position of General Manager. It was through her work that she travelled overseas to many countries and this was the start a lifelong passion for traveling and shopping, particularly in Hong Kong and Italy. In 2012 Kathy was diagnosed with breast cancer and in 2019 Karen reached out to Otis and a retreat stay at Kezs Hideaway was planned, sadly Kathy passed away a week before her guest stay was due. Kathy admired the work of The Otis Foundation and to help us achieve our mission made a bequest to provide for other others going through breast cancer. 04.01.2022 Our world is shifting ! New restrictions on the way we play, travel, socialise and work have been introduced with the emphasis to protect the most vulnerable members of our communities. Guidelines are changing almost daily, now.... In response to these rapid and essential changes, the OTIS Foundation has made the heart wrenching decision to postpone guest stays over the next few months. This critically important and difficult decision has been made to ensure the absolute safety and well-being of our guests, they are respected and treasured vulnerable members of the community and travel is most certainly not an option for them at this time. One of the members of our dedicated OTIS team will be in contact with each and every one of our guests personally in the coming days. This will be to explore options for rescheduling a stay with us to a time when it will be safe to travel. OTIS remains totally committed to providing that much needed temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompanies an individual breast cancer journey. This crisis will eventually pass, but it is crucial in the meantime to support one another in the face of great uncertainty. 03.01.2022 Moving past a challenging year Whilst there have been many challenges in 2020 the incredible generosity of our property donors, partners and sponsors nationwide is humbling. The impact of strangers gifting a break in their property to another stranger, is profound. The backing and belief we receive from all partners, donors and supporters is remarkable and never taken for granted. We look forward to delivering time away to even more people experiencing breast cancer. Du...ring the Pandemic our waiting list has grown by 20% and, as our world slowly shifts back towards socialising, playing and in the future travel the dedicated Otis team are actively working to plan stays in our partner accommodation and donated properties. As we focus on re-commencing guest stays, we have a COVID-19 Safety Management plan in place for all aspects of our work and accommodation to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our guests, staff, volunteers and partners. In late 2020, we plan to re-open the Bendigo office for limited periods in line with public health advice. In the meantime, our team all continue to work from home to meet the individual needs of those affected by breast cancer. The bookings and property management roles continue to be led by Nola Tranter with Kerry Kranz assisting with bookings. Mandy Mitchell is continuing with the events management and fund raising and, Jennifer Fitzpatrick with the finance side of the business.
