25.01.2022 Bro. Brinkman was in Adelaide today and was lucky to a have personal tour of SA/NT Freemasons Hall, built in 1927. Did you know the first lodge in SA was forme...d in England in 1834, 2 years before it was settled, and was consecrated Lodge of Friendship as a way of helping the new settlers to get along in harmony once there? Thus Freemasonry and Lodge of Friendship (which is still operating) had a founding role in the settling of South Australia. Kudos!!

11.01.2022 Why Deacons carry Wands There is so much symbolism within Freemasonry and often we overlook some of it that is plain sight. Everything in the Masonic ritual has... a reason or a hidden meaning that we have to root out so that we understand why we do what we do. So why do Deacons carry Wands? On the south coast of England, in the county of Sussex, near the town of Wilmington, there is carved into a hillside, the figure of a man with arms outstretched and in each hand he holds an asherah or staff. The figure is 70 meters high (125 feet). Nobody knows who carved it there, but it is known to be several thousand years old. The word Asherah is the name given to the wooden staff, approx. 6 in length which was carried by the attendants to the high priests in ancient times and was the insignia of their office. The wooden staffs were named for the Goddess Asherah who was the mother of twins Shachar and Shalem who were respectively the God of Dawn and the God of Dusk. That is significant as will become apparent later. The word deacon is a derivation from the Greek word "diakonos" meaning servant, attendant or messenger. This definition is appropriate to these officers as they serve as the messenger of the Master and the Wardens. The Senior Deacon sits to the right of the RWM and acts as the messenger between the RWM and the WSW. The Junior Deacon is the messenger between the Wardens. So two deacons with wands are the equivalent of two attendants with Asherahs. In the Explanation of the 1st degree Tracing Board it states that a Masonic lodge is situated due east and west for three reasons. 1st - The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Remember Shachar and Shalem the Gods of dawn and dusk, sunrise/sunset, there is a connection there. 2nd Learning started in the East and spread its benign influence to the West 3rd - The tabernacle of Moses and the temple of Solomon were so situated. Well take the tabernacle of Moses because he and his followers were always on the move, and it provides a great example of the use of the Asherah. All holy or sacred buildings at that time were situated due east and west and the tabernacle of Moses was no different except that Moses and his followers were on the move for 40 years. So the tabernacle, which was of course a tent, had to be dismantled and re-erected every time they moved, and at the rebuilding it had to be situated due east and west.. So Moses and his two attendants, complete with asherahs, would go to the chosen site where the tabernacle was to be erected just before dawn, accompanied by the heavy gang who were going to do the erecting. Moses would then choose the spot where the altar was to be and instruct one of the attendants to place his asherah on that spot. When the sun rose above the horizon, the rays from the sun would strike the asherah and send a long thin shadow towards the west. The other attendant would then place his asherah on the other end of the shadow and that would designate the centre line of the proposed tabernacle. The heavy gang would then move in and erect the tabernacle with the altar at the east end and the entrance at the west end. Obviously, the magnetic compass had not been invented at that time so all holy and sacred buildings had to be set out with the aid of two asherahs and King Solomons temple was no different. And so, the asherah, being the very first tool or implement to be made use of at the building of the temple makes them of extreme importance from a Masonic historical point of view, and as such should be carried at all times as the insignia of the office of the deacons; and in particular when conducting a candidate as he begins his Masonic journey of the building of his own moral temple.

04.01.2022 "Freemasonry offers a simple philosophical message to its members and one that we should all be proud of: that within each of us is a thoughtful, kind, tolerant... and respectful individual. Our purpose is not only to promote virtue, but also to promote a thoughtful approach to being virtuous. It is centred around an analogy of building, or creating, and thus by chipping away our rough edges, Freemasonry teaches us to chip away at our inadequacies, revealing the better person we can be, one more fit to serve those less fortunate than ourselves, those who have fared less well in life than us, and those communities from which we are drawn." Dr David Staples Grand Secretary - United Grand Lodge of England
04.01.2022 On this day in 2007, the Roman Catholic Church announced that a papal edict regarding the Knights Templar had wrongly been kept secret for 700 years. Based upon... the Chinon Parchment that was re-discovered by Vatican researchers in the Secret Archives in 2001 (it had been "misfiled"), the Church announced that in August 1308, the Pope had absolved Jacques DeMolay and the leaders of the Knights Templar of all charges of heresy and other sins, and restored them to full communion in the Church. The Templars had been falsely charged and arrested on October 13, 1307, on the instigation of Philip the Fair, King of France, who was highly indebted to the Knights Templar. The absolution and revocation of excommunication notwithstanding, because of politics with the French king, the pope still allowed the dissolution of the Order. Ultimately, in 1314, DeMolay and other top leaders were executed at the Ile de la Cite, outside the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris. Post courtesy of Mark Wright.
