24.01.2022 Recent rains in one of the state's most northern communities allowed for a green turf at the annual Oodnadatta football match. www.7NEWS.com.au #7NEWS

24.01.2022 We have a very hot week coming up. We can not stress enough to people travelling in the area to please be well equipped with lots of water and food during this ...heat wave. Do not leave your vehicle under any circumstance. Always have a safety person as in a family member or a friend who you can check in with along your travels, so if you dont check in they can ring the alarm bells. Stay safe travelling guys and as cool as possible.

24.01.2022 It is with regret and a lot of disappointment that we announce the cancellation of the 2020 Oodnadatta races & Gymkhana. Our committee has put a lot of hou...rs into planning the celebration of the 130th year, trying to make it one of the biggest race weekends yet. But we can ensure you we will be back next year with an even bigger event planned to celebrate the 130th + 1 year. We have tried our hardest to be positive that we would be able to still have our event in September but with COVID19 restrictions we arent able to go ahead. We thank everyone who has their race horses back in work and always supporting our event, without all of our supporters and competitors our event wouldnt have been celebrating 130 years. We are still proud to say we hold Australias longest running picnic race meeting. Refunding of all ball tickets sales will happen over the next couple days and we will be contacting our amazing sponsors. We are pleased to also announce CATHERINE BRITT has confirmed she will be attending the 2021 event and is as excited as we are. See you all on May 7th & 8th 2021

20.01.2022 NO MORE ROAD CLOSURES FOR THE YEAR THANK YOU ALL

20.01.2022 In light of the COVID-19 threat, we have made the difficult decision to close our campground until further notice. We are in a prime spot to self isolate and do our bit to #flattenthecurve, and feel that this is our best chance of doing that effectively. Apologies to anyone hoping to travel through. Stay safe, and look forward to seeing you all when this is all over.

19.01.2022 . On this day a year ago we were our way home after a days mustering when we came across a terrible accident on the main road just 1...0km from the homestead. We were on the scene within minutes of it happening and we were soon to learn dealing with an accident isnt as straight forward as calling 000 and waiting with the patient until help arrives within 15 minutes when you live in the middle of nowhere. I stayed with the patient and his travelling companion while Justin rushed home to begin making phone calls. I relayed information about the patient to Justin over a handheld 2 way radio for him to share with the help on the other end of the phone. As the patient was in a pretty critical condition we had to try and access an emergency service to help assess the patient further before transport for the patient could be confirmed with RFDS plane which was waiting on standby. We had both recently completed a first aid course with the RFDS which was invaluable in helping deal and remain as calm as possible with the situation we were faced with. The RFDS provided support over the phone and we were able to help make the patient as comfortable as possible in a very unpleasant situation. This included delivering pain relief intramuscularly with a needle under their guidance. Talk about nerve racking! It was an agonising 3 hour wait on a very cold July evening and at around 8pm an ambulance arrived from a mine site located to the north of us. They transported the patient back to the homestead where they continued to work with them until the RFDS plane landed at the airstrip near by. The patient was then in their very capable hands on on there way to get the treatment required to begin their journey of recovery. With more and more people beginning to get out and explore again please remember to be prepared when travelling in our amazing remote areas as the land is unforgiving and help can be a long time coming. Please consider- - Carrying plenty of water (even in the colder months). - Having a First aid kit. - Carrying Epirb or Satellite phone if possible. - A 2 Way Radio (car mounted or hand held). - Checking the outback road conditions on the Outback Road Warnings website. - Having 2 inflated spare tyres. - Letting someone know when you leave and arrive at destinations if travelling alone. - Always driving to the conditions and if unsure take it slow. - Staying on main roads and tracks. It has been so great to see dust on the horizon as people are coming to explore our area again as it is an amazing part of the country. 13.01.2022 Take a look at the Arckaringa Daisy (Olearia arckaringensis), a small compact and rounded perennial shrub that was first discovered in 2000. Listed as endangere...d under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, it is one of the native plants we are working to protect. The Arckaringa Daisy grows up to 30cm high from a woody base and is endemic to the Arckaringa Hills in northern SA. Its leaves are greyish-white to light greenish-grey and its flowers are usually pale purple in colour or occasionally white. 10.01.2022 We are sorry to say that we are not opening for our 2020 season and will be closed to camping until who knows when. I know you have all been expecting us to sa...y this because it is in compliance with the Government directive for closure of all non-essential businesses. I am sure you can all adapt to the dramatic change that Covid19 has brought to our lives. You could - have a holiday at home! Relive your past travel experiences; plan your next holiday; learn something new (like how to grow a few greens to keep you going between shopping forays); look at the sky; read something different (try Winnie the Pooh by A. A. Milne if you havent already). Above all - STAY HOME - and remember to laugh every day. See you in 2021!

09.01.2022 Weve just got back from a very wonderful holiday in NZ, and, while it was fantastic to be the travellers for a change instead of the hosts, were now home again and looking forward to welcoming visitors to Arckaringa and The Painted Desert this year. Arckaringa received 40mm of rain in the time we were gone, so weve come back to a lovely bit of short green fuzz around Thanks to Daryl for taking care of the station while we were away

09.01.2022 Yesterday we lost a man we were all proud to call our work mate & friend. Jeffrey has been apart of the roadhouse team for as long as we can remember. Our team... worked closely with aged care & the community to care for him each and every day. Jeffery stole the hearts of so many of our staff over the years. There was always tears from both them and Jeffrey when it was time to continue their travels. Jeffrey would put his apron on each morning and would quiet often clear plates for us, lift a heavy box, help unload the truck (this would mean only one or two boxes), remind us each day the truck is coming even if it wasnt Thursday or simply just sit at his table saying hello to everyone who walked in our doors. Sometimes we would even find Jeffrey giving directions on maps and road information. He is well know to the travelling public for sitting outside playing his guitar and singing for hours on end or riding his push bike around town. We feel like Jeffrey is well known around the whole world, he is as famous as the Pink Roadhouse is. The roadhouse is going to be very different without you Mr Mack. Our love and thoughts are with Jeffreys family, friends, the Oodnadatta community and everyone who knew Jeffrey. You are going to be missed so much by the whole roadhouse family past & present. RIP Jeffrey Mack ~ 29/4/20

07.01.2022 Our campground is basic, but we try hard to add nice little touches to our facilities, for our guests convenience. Ive just gone over to clean the bathrooms, to find that one of our new (only a few weeks old), pretty, soap dispensers is missing from one of the bathrooms. Im in disbelief that someone would steal this, but a thorough search of both bathrooms, as well as the wider campground area, and its not turned up anywhere. If you come across someone in your travels with a lovely soap dispenser like the one below, please ask them if theyve been to the Painted Desert recently!

06.01.2022 One of many interesting sights along the Oodnadatta Track is Algebuckina Bridge. You can read about this and many other things in our Oodnadatta Track guide on our website: http://traveloutbackaustralia.com/oodnadatta-track.html/ #traveloutbackaust
