25.01.2022 Brrrrrrrrr! It's so cold this evening! Has anyone else got their fire lit or is it just us?? In gardening news the wind has wreaked havoc with my poor asparagus plants, the ones that I've let go to fern (we are on 50% harvest this year) have all been blown over How's everyone else's garden faring so far this spring?

25.01.2022 PERTH WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE! As of today we are completely caught up on the backlog and it’s back to business as usual. Bales delivered in packs of 21 We fit 12 packs on the truck... We’ve received the first order for the next Perth trip, so there’s 11 more spaces to fill the truck before we will travel up again. Best place to order is on the Website www.thepeastrawman.com.au For those of you who like statistics, since 18th May Mick has delivered: 926 bales in Bunbury and the South West 819 bales in Perth 3,990 kms travelled I think I’ll let him have the day off tomorrow....

20.01.2022 Today I took advantage of the cooler temperature and absence of 40km/hr winds to give one of my veggie beds some much needed TLC. I wish I’d had presence of mind to take photos before I started, it was full of weeds and quite a lot of cheeky sweet potato re-growth (I grew sweet spuds in that bed two years ago..... yes I was warned!!!) Anyhow I’ve taken some photos to illustrate how much area a bale of pea straw will cover. Many people ask us how much coverage a bale will giv...e and the answer is inevitably it depends how thick you put it on! This is an example of a thick application. The area covered is 3.6m2 (the veggie bed is 1.2 x 4m, and I got 3m along with this bale) Given that I usually advise people that a thickly applied bale will cover approximately 4m2 I’m quite happy to have just about proved myself right! I took the photo showing depth of cover before I trod it down and watered it so it looks really high. I like to thoroughly pull the biscuits apart, which is why it has the fluffed up appearance. It will settle down after a couple more turns under the sprinkler and it won’t blow anywhere when the next lot of strong wind comes along. Now it can lie fallow for a couple of months while I decide what to plant in it. (Not sweet potatoes that’s for sure!!) Happy gardening

20.01.2022 Autumn has arrived and I have harvested most of my butternut pumpkins I hope your gardens are productive too

05.01.2022 We have room on the truck for another 4 packs before we will head to Perth. Now is a good time to get an order in and do some winter mulching. Picture: my lettuce enjoying a little winter sunshine

03.01.2022 How good is it that Woollies are giving away seed growing kits instead of plastic rubbish?

01.01.2022 The yard around the side of our house is a work in progress. Which is to say that progress is currently suspended as we are a bit too busy at the moment to deal with it. So I have put down a thick layer of pea straw over the bare dirt to suppress the summer weeds. There's something about the dappled evening light in this picture that helps me to imagine what a lovely garden it will eventually be.
