23.01.2022 Has your pet got a healthy mouth? Dental disease is often missed in our furry friends because it is difficult to easily examine their teeth. Diagnosing and treating dental disease early can lead to much better outcomes for your pet. 22.01.2022 As your pet gets older, they may develop health problems associated with aging. Therefore, it is important to keep a close eye on them and have them assessed regularly so any changes can be picked up as soon as they occur! Some conditions seen in senior animals can include: Arthritis Dental disease... Cancers Organ changes- including kidney/bladder, liver, gastrointestinal tract and more Cognitive changes Hearing and vision impairment These are just to name a few! This is why we recommend a health check in our senior pets every 6-12 months. During these visits a thorough examination is given to see if any new lumps or bumps can be felt on your pet and need investigating, hearing assessment and eye examinations are performed and mobility and joints assessed as well as a general physical exam. Even if your aging pet looks perfect on the outside we cannot tell what may be going on on the inside and this is why routine blood tests are also recommended especially in older animals. If you think your animal may be showing aging signs or if you just want a thorough check over of your pet- contact the clinic so one of our friendly staff can look after you and your pet.

Unlike most humans where we brush our teeth twice daily, this is not done in most dogs and they can accumulate plaque and calculus on their teeth quite quickly which can lead to a painful mouth. Signs of dental disease can include: Smelly breath Salivation... Favouring one side of the mouth when eating Refusing to eat Strange lumps appearing around the face. Most dogs are very stoic and do not show signs of pain. If you think your dog may have any of the clinical signs listed above then they may have dental disease and require a scale and polish to clean those teeth and given them a pain free mouth!
