25.01.2022 Is inflammation the underlying cause of your health issues? Inflammation plays a significant role in a wide variety of health complaints that I see in clinic - from general aches and pains, endometriosis and general period pains, joint pains, as well as poor mental clarity and focus. . One of the comments I love most from my patients when they are doing my gut health program (apart from 'I'm finally losing weight!') is that they are not so stiff and sore any more, closel...y followed by "I have more energy". . But what is the link between gut health, inflammation and energy production? . Well, as you most likely know, a significant portion (around 70+%) of our immune system is based in our gut. . Macrophages (the 'pac-man' of the immune system) are a type of white blood cell that are prominent in our gut, that 'eat' microbes and cellular debris, but are also responsible for stimulating an immune response when needed . This 'call to arms' is an inflammatory response, and it has an impact on Mitochondrial function. . Mitochondria, also known as the 'powerhouse' of the cell, produce ATP, or energy. . During an inflammatory response, Mitochondrial function is reduced (or in severe cases, halted), resulting in reduced energy production and increase in harmful & toxic compounds, which further promotes inflammation. . When we eliminate those foods that may affect gut health or promote inflammation, we can reduce macrophage over-activity and promote proper mitochondrial function, the results achieved can sometimes be nothing short of miraculous! . If you are feeling fatigued, experiencing generalised aches and pains, weight gain despite good diet and exercise, 'meno-belly', or just want to feel better overall, please give me a call and see how I can help you feel better, in as little as 1 week! . #Immunometabolism #GutHealth #ThePhattNat . 22.01.2022 , ! Unfortunately, many people aren't getting enough sleep, with around 30% of Australian adults getting less than six hours most nights. . ... Evidence shows that sleep may be the missing factor for many people who are struggling to lose weight. This is because, without sufficient 'deep' sleep, our brain function & endocrine (hormonal) systems are affected. More specifically, our insulin sensitivity, cortisol and satiety hormones (ghrelin & leptin) are negatively affected, which can lead to an increase in overweight and obesity through poor glucose tolerance, and impaired thyroid function. Good sleep hygiene practices, including regular bedtime and wake times, could be the missing piece of the puzzle in your weight loss journey.

18.01.2022 What is Insulin Resistance? Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas to help digest carbohydrates to glucose, so that your cells can absorb glucose to use as energy. It plays a key role in metabolism and blood sugar regulation. "In insulin resistance, cells and muscles stop absorbing glucose as efficiently and more glucose stays in the blood," explained Rebecca Elbaum, RD, CDE. "The body then needs more insulin to absorb glucose so that it can be delivered to the cells.... Eventually, the cells that secrete insulin fail to keep up with the body's need and blood glucose builds up in the blood stream and stays elevated." This elevated blood sugar can lead to chronic disease and other serious complications such as pre-diabetes and full-blown type 2 diabetes. And while people who have insulin resistance aren't necessarily more prone to gaining weight, being overweight or obese can cause insulin resistance explained Kathleen Wyne, MD, endocrinologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Centre. "Most people who are obese are insulin resistant," she said. Other than the likelihood of having insulin resistance from being overweight or obese, the only other physical symptom is acanthosis nigricans, or a dark colouring of the skin on the neck or armpit. If you think you may be at risk for insulin resistance, be sure to visit your doctor; the diagnostic criteria includes being overweight or obese (with a concentration of belly fat), having a fasting blood glucose level between 100 and 125 mg/dl, hypertension, triglyceride levels of over 150, and low HDL ("good" cholesterol) at less than 40 for men and less than 50 for women, explained Wyne. Fortunately, treating insulin resistance is pretty straightforward, if not always easy: weight loss, regular exercise, and possibly the medication Metformin to lower blood sugar. "The best way to reverse [insulin resistance], if it's caught early enough, is through lifestyle modifications," said Eduardo Grunvald, MD, program director at UC San Diego's Weight Management Program. "So just exercise, independent of weight loss, just regular exercise will improve insulin sensitivity." In addition to working out, losing weight will improve insulin resistance losing just six kilos and keeping it off will slow the progression to diabetes says Dr. Wyne. Thankfully, the Weight Loss program I recommend can help people lose weight (on average 6-10kg per round), and may help improve insulin sensitivity, in conjunction with regular exercise. For more information about this program, send me a PM or give me a call on 0414 855 722.
