"Start with your head in a relaxed position, loo...k straight ahead and tuck your chin in as far as you can comfortably, then relax and repeat. 17.01.2022 How do you stay mentally healthy at work? With our busy schedules, its easy to become stressed and overwhelmed with work and not find time for anything else. T...he trick is to find a balance that can boost your career or business and your overall wellbeing. As part of Mental Health Week were encouraging all Australians to take care of themselves at work. Scheduling regular walks or breaks, being able to say no when requests are unreasonable and avoiding checking your email or answering work calls out of hours, all contribute to positive mental health. 17.01.2022 Approximately one in five Australians has #arthritis (osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis) and, in a survey of more than 1000 sufferers, researchers David Hu...nter and Edward Riordan found that nearly 80 per cent reported that their symptoms worsened during cold weather. Weather sensitivity in people with OA has been reported previously, and a number of physiological and psychological explanations have been proposed. It has been suggested that, because tendons, muscles, bones, and scar tissues are of varied densities, differential expansions and contractions due to atmospheric changes result in pain at sites of micro-trauma. 17.01.2022 I am often asked to explain X-ray, CT or MRI findings for back pain. I find this topic interesting and want to share it. Reports of degenerative changes (arthritis!) and intervertebral disc bulges (terrible word) are common in the reports of these tests. Let me just clarify some well-proven scientific facts.... A specific medical diagnosis is only present in less than 15% of back pain sufferers (an example could be MRI evidence of a disc compromising a nerve in the back and causing leg pain). Arthritis and disc bulges on X-rays and scans may not be the source of the pain. Or they can be the source of the pain, but certainly not the cause of it (for example posture or movement patterns could be the main underlying cause). People can have severe back pain without any x-ray, CT or MRI evidence of arthritis or disc bulges. And vice versa, people can have the most shocking X-rays and scans, but have not had any back pain ever! So it is important to get a good understanding of these X-ray, CT or MRI findings and their relevance to back pain for each individual with back pain. X-rays and scans are not essential to getting a back problem fixed. Lastly, it is important to note that back pain is a complex interplay between posture, movement, the aggravating task, strength and flexibility; and also, understanding of the problem, and social and psychological factors. If you would like to talk to me about it give me a call at The Physio Practice on 9569 0034 or email me at [email protected]

13.01.2022 With almost 700 million people aged over 60 years globally, our health system must consider the particular needs and challenges faced by many older people. Toda...y, on International Day of Older persons we celebrate the incredible contribution the many older men and women continue to make to our society. Physiotherapy plays an integral role keeping our older populations active and well, customising exercises for people based on age and physical condition. Physiotherapists can help those who are limited due to #arthritis, #stroke, a #fracture, #osteoporosis, and #heartdisease or even healthy people who just want improve their exercise routine and muscle movement. In some areas, physiotherapists run special fitness classes for seniors. If you are a senior looking to improve your health, exercise routine, or a specific physical limitation, speak to an APA physiotherapist: http://bit.ly/1tM4MAr Image via World Health Organization (WHO)

11.01.2022 CONSIDERING SURGERY!!!!. Spinal surgery is only one tool in the management of spinal pain. Research shows that all aspects of pain must be adressed in order to get the best outcome with or without surgery Factors such as unsuitabe movement patterns, fitness, physical conditioning, poor sleep, fear avoidant behaviours and anxiety about pain are all linked to chronic spinal pain. In fact, if these factors are addressed you may not even need the surgery.... Spinal surgery has its role and in the event that it may be required, if you havent addressed these factors you may end up the same or even worse post-op. READ ARTICLE. 07.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Childrens Sports & PhysiotherapyClinic Newsletter Did you know that almost 40% of all children, teenager and adolescent injuries are sports-related? Injuries in the young athlete are often trivialised. They are usually asked or encouraged to "toughen up and play through the pain." This approach is not in the young athletes best interest for the following reasons: ... It often leads to delayed healing and return to sports. It can turn an easily treatable injury into one that becomes difficult to treat. In some cases, it can result in a permanent injury that precludes sports participation. Factors that will affect the likelihood of a child sustaining an injury are: Physical makeup of the child. The natural strength of our ligaments and soft tissues varies from person to person. Other factors such as body weight, posture and even hormonal factors can have an influence. In contact sports, the physical maturity of the child compared to their opponents. Degree of supervision. Use of protective equipment. The amount of adequate warm-up. The amount of sport played. If your child has an injury then we will help you to overcome that injury. However, we acknowledge that it is far better to prevent an injury from occurring in the first place. Dominique Honore at The Physio Practice will work with you to achieve the following: To manage the acute injury by reducing pain and inflammation To advise you on exercises to do at home to encourage quicker recovery. You will also be advised on what to avoid during training and when is the best time for you to return to your sport. To give you a detailed postural assessment. This will include analysis of any muscle imbalances that you may be presenting with i.e. tight / shortened muscles compared to stretched weak ones. To advise you of a training programme that you will need to take back to your club/coach/trainer. This will correct any imbalances of the muscles and will help you to achieve a better posture. Stay well and happy Monday. Rima

05.01.2022 Latest research shows that if you have chronic low back pain, constantly activating your core and maintaining upright posture keeps the back pain going. 04.01.2022 Exercising in water during #pregnancy is a great option to ease pressure and weight off joints which are lax due to hormonal changes. Pregnant mothers are ofte...n cautioned about overheating during exercise especially in hydrotherapy pools which are typically kept quite warm, however latest research published in the #JournalofPhysiotherapy finds temperatures currently used in community pools (typically 30 to 32 degrees, but even up to 33 degrees) do not cause women to increase their body temperatures to a dangerous extent. Therefore, aqua aerobics classes can be encouraged with reassurance that there should be no risk of overheating the foetus. 04.01.2022 Hi everyone, Heres a little bit of information about the knee. Stay well! The knee is a relatively simple joint, however it performs a complicated task. The knee needs to function properly to provide flexible mobility while bearing considerable weight. While walking down the street, our knees bear three to five times our body weight. Some people are more likely to develop knee problems than others. Many jobs, sports and recreation activities or getting older, or having a dis...ease such as osteoporosis or arthritis increase the chances of having a knee problem. Stretch of the Month Wall Push-up This stretches the Achilles and calf muscles one leg at a time. 1. Stand with the rear foot approximately two to three feet from the wall. 2. The rear leg should be straight, the front leg is bent and your hands touch the wall. 3. Feet point straight ahead, heels are on the ground. 4. Hold for 10 seconds, switch legs, repeat 10 times.

03.01.2022 If you see anyone offering a "free spinal check"... if you DO NOT HAVE BACK OR NECK PAIN, then DO NOT DO IT. You may think it will prevent pain in the future, but research shows IT WILL NOT DO THIS. In fact it shows that it will in fact increase the likelihood of getting pain. http://ow.ly/FVjQ30dlIcR

02.01.2022 Happy Sunday everyone. A quick reminder to anyone being active today to make sure you warm up first and then warm down and stretch after. Its very important to prevent injuries. (RY) #staywell #physiotherapy #stayactive
