15.01.2022 Wondered if the position of your child's backpack is hurting their back? Here are some tips to help your kids wear their backpack comfortably! Sit the bag higher up on the back, as opposed to lower down Always have two WIDE straps. Avoid single shoulder straps or narrow straps... Make sure the backpack size is proportionate to your child, sitting above the hip bones and no lower than 5cm below the top of the shoulders Use the bag compartments well! Pack lighter items in the outside pockets, and heavier items in the large inner pocket, closest to your child's back Use the waist-strap if the back-pack has one! See more

12.01.2022 ‘Bulging discs’ don’t always cause back pain. Did you know that you can have a bulging disc, that has been evident on a scan such as an MRI and have absolutely no pain? Studies have shown that age related changes in a disc, such as bulging, don’t fully explain why a person is experiencing back pain. So if you have been undergoing treatment for a ‘bulging disc’ and are not improving give the physio team at Optimise Health a call to arrange a time to undertake an assessment and management plan that will incorporate the latest in pain sciences knowledge to help you.
12.01.2022 Getting Surgery? There's a common misconception that the success of your surgery is dependent solely on your surgeons, and "how the surgery goes". The reality is that what YOU do leading up to your surgery, and throughout your recovery (especially in the initial weeks) has a LOT to do with your outcome both now and in the many years to come.... That's why we help our patients with: Preparing them and their body for their specific surgery Working to optimise their recovery Helping them avoid anything that may impair recovery and instead focusing on techniques that will facilitate a healthy and timely recovery If this sounds like you or anyone you know, tell them to call The Physio!
12.01.2022 Knee pain - are you getting any of these symptoms? Pain below or around the kneecap Swelling Weakness at the knee... Stiffness when moving the knee joint Tingling or burning Difficulty walking on the injured leg If so - we can help! We find the cause of the problem and treat it to alleviate your current symptoms, and help prevent them coming back in the future.
11.01.2022 What's the best position to be sleeping in if you have lower back pain? You can try: Lying on your back with a small pillow beneath your knees. This should help encourage the natural curvature of your spine. Try to prevent your head from going to one side Sleep on your side with a pillow beneath the knees. This raises the upper leg, which restores the natural alignment of the hips, pelvis and spine. Don't forget to alternate sides!... Sleep in the fetal position. This is the curled position where you like on your side, drawing your knees up to your chest until your back is relatively straight. Don't forget to support your head and neck with a pillow. This is a good position for those with a herniated disk as it can help give some relief.
11.01.2022 Did you know that the benefits to your child when they get at least one hour of exercise every day has far wider-reaching effects than just the physical benefits? Yep! Aside from helping develop their muscle and bone strength and cardiovascular capacity, exercise also helps: Enhance self-esteem... Improve concentration Reduce the symptoms of anxiety Boost energy levels Controls mood swings Fosters the feelings of happiness ... And so much more! We love helping kids stay healthy, happy and be pain-free to explore, adventure and keep active!

08.01.2022 Did you know that up to 70% of women will experience incontinence at some point in their lives? Yep! And your pelvic floor often has something to do with it. This is because the pelvic floor helps us to stay continent (as well as helping stabilise our lower back and pelvic, and helps our sexual activity!). Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles, connective tissues and the nervous system that helps support the bladder, bowel and the uterus in women. This means that MEN can ha...ve problems with their pelvic floor, too. If you need help with problems around your pelvic floor, we'd love to help. Book in with our physio team in Toowoomba by calling (07) 4638 3022.
08.01.2022 Is your work making you vulnerable to hand and wrist injuries? Many hand and wrist injuries are PREVENTABLE because they occur from repeated daily use. Often, this occurs at work - whether that's in your workplace or your new home office. If you've been feeling any small or sharp pains or niggles at work, or have noticed certain movements that exacerbate your discomfort, get them sorted early - before they worsen to a more serious or longstanding problem.
08.01.2022 Have recent circumstances seen you sitting at a desk and hunching over more than normal - leading to back pain? Back pain is something that we're trained to treat here at The Physio. We don't just look at managing your current symptoms though - we go beyond that to help prevent it from happening in the future - and give you the tools to know what to do if it does.
08.01.2022 Exercising after pregnancy - where do you even start? Having a baby places enormous stress on your body - so we've shown you where you can start here: https://www.thephysio.net.au//exercise-after-pregnancy-whe
07.01.2022 Is water alone enough for your recovery after exercise? When you exercise and sweat, you don't just lose water - you also lose electrolytes. Electrolytes are essential to the healthy function of your body, and having an electrolyte imbalance can affect everything from the regularity of your heartbeat to your muscle health. Many electrolytes can be lost through exercise, including sodium, potassium, magnesium and more, which may cause symptoms including cramps, headaches and... worse. So how do you know if you may benefit from an electrolyte replacement? Generally speaking, if you're completing non-strenuous exercise for under an hour, then it's likely you'll be okay. If you're exercising for over an hour, and doing it regularly, then an electrolyte replacement MAY be beneficial, according to sports dietitians. If you're currently training for a marathon on strenuous sports events, then we highly recommend chatting to your GP, who can also test your electrolyte balance so you know for certain. Having stable levels of both hydration and electrolytes is important for your overall health, well-being and body function, so if you're not feeling quite right, get your levels checked and look after yourself!
07.01.2022 Ice OR heat - which should you be using after a workout? Ice works by constricting the blood vessels, helping to reduce inflammation by decreasing the blood flow to the area. This means less pain and potentially less damage to the tissues. Heat helps dilate your blood vessels, promote blood flow, clear waste products from the body and help your muscles relax.... While both are very different, they can both help your recovery when used appropriately, and many people alternate both to help control and reduce exercise-related muscle pain. However you use ice and heat, don't forget to: Never apply heat or ice directly to the skin, do so through a towel or hot water bottle, or limit the temperature Never apply heat to an open wound, or ice to someone that is already very cold Stay mindful of your other conditions - like if you have sensation loss from diabetes, as you may not be able to feel the effects of the heat/ice and prolonged exposure to either may cause an injury or further damage If you have an injury and you need help to recovery effectively and in a timely manner, we're here to help!

06.01.2022 Pain is NOT normal! Not in kids and not in adults. Today we'd like to share with you a frustration that many health practitioners have in common. It's the idea that physical pain at certain times of life, like during growth in kids, is 'just a part of life', and they've just got to 'wait it out'. The truth is that ALL pain has a cause and reason. If we understand that cause, we can treat it. For some, treatment may fix the pain altogether. For others, it may reduce the pain i...ntensity. Often, we can reduce the length of time before the pain stops. But it all starts with not accepting pain, and taking action to find out the cause, alleviate it, and then put the right tools in place to help prevent it from coming back in the future. So if you have muscular or joint pain - regardless of your age - come in and see our experienced team!
05.01.2022 Low-grade systemic inflammation and pain Low-grade systemic inflammation is a minor, whole body inflammation that is a result ongoing production of pro-inflammatory chemicals from within the body. There is often no single cause but the following factors are considered to play a role. ... Chronic stress including childhood trauma Chronic minor infections particularly from your teeth and gums Obesity Reduced fitness Aging Toxins and pollutants Low grade systemic inflammation has been linked with: Chronic pain Osteoarthritis Depression & anxiety Fatigue Heart disease Diabetes If you are experiencing chronic pain and wish to take steps towards a comprehensive approach to optimising your health, give is a call.

01.01.2022 What you MUST know about ‘nerves’ Nerves are fascinating. They are essential for life and movement. They conduct information around the body and influence everything from movement, to heart rate, digestion and of course how we think and feel. There a couple of things that nerves love. Movement and blood flow. Movement of our bodies keeps nerves healthy, that’s why sitting down for long periods of time is not good for the human body. This movement is turn keeps blood flow goi...ng to these important structures. But did you know that nerves have their own nerve supply? Sometimes, like other soft tissues in the body like muscle, nerves can be injured and become a major contributor to persistent pain. Management of an ongoing pain issue after nerve injury requires a specific approach to this complex problem. Give us a call at Optimise Health if you would like to make a time to see our physiotherapy team about your pain.
