24.01.2022 Hey South Australians Earlier in the year I created a 30 DAYS OF BACKYARD PLAY video series. It might help you with some easy kids play over the next week. The Backyard Play Series:... - uses common household items you have laying around already - no need to go to the shops. - is all FREE - has no educational pressure and is all about PLAY (where learning inevitably happens anyway) You can find all the videos on my Facebook, IGTV and YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/NeTaPYTbAJ8 Please tag me if you try them! I hope they help you get through this week . . Tag any SA Mums who might need some extra inspo to get through this week! . #growyourown #organicgardening #homegrown #growyourownfood #urbangarden #growsomethinggreen #greenthumb #vegetablegarden #urbangardening #urbanorganicgardener #organicgarden #gardening #urbangardenersrepublic #gardener #backyardgarden #harvest #kitchengarden #veggiegarden #growfood #ilovegardening #springfieldqld #eatlocal #amazinggardener #greenisthenewblack #plotaustralia #greaterspringfield #ipswich #discoveripswich #organicgardenermag

23.01.2022 Gloves They drive me crazy. Try putting them on 44 three year olds every Friday. BUT it’s such an important part of our creative kids gardening workshops. Safety factors aside- it’s a huge life skill! Try being a cleaner, winter sports athlete, doctor or working a trade without them It’s also AMAZING for developing motor skills. To put gloves on you need hand strength to push your fist into the glove and then you need to be able to independently move each finger . It’s ...actually very tricky! And can’t be learned on an iPad or in front of the TV. So pop some gardening gloves in your kids Christmas stockings this year - and then give them a chance to use them I can testify in four months time with weekly use most four year olds will be able to put them on by themselves. 18.01.2022 Growing your own food as a parent - doing all the work and reaping NONE of the rewards. The little punks keep getting all the passion fruits! Time to plant another vine soon I think. This vine is Panama Red but there’s another variety called Panama Gold where the fruit ripen to a deep yellow rather than purple. Maybe if I plant one of those the boys will be waiting for them to change colour to ripen and in the meantime I can actually eat a few? Garden warfare. 18.01.2022 Hi Just casually being smug over here about installing a rainwater tank the weekend before getting 74mm in five days . Our 5000L tank is now 1/2 full During the first storm we lost a fair bit of the downpour over the top of the front gutters. It was coming down so fast and at a weird angle- apparently gutter clips can fix that Anyway. If you’ve got a tank (or want a tank) let’s have fun tank chat here I’ll start us off - do you tap your tank with one knuckl...e or two when trying to gauge the level? (WHO NEEDS LATE NIGHT SHOPPING WHEN YOU CAN HAVE ONLINE CHATS SO ENGAGING RIGHHHHHHT??!) Sidenote: prior to getting a tank- get a rain gauge first. It’ll fill you with smugness by knowing exactly how many mms of rain you’ve gotten- even if you don’t have anything to catch it with yet. . . @theipswichphotographer #growyourown #organicgardening #homegrown #growyourownfood #urbangarden #growsomethinggreen #greenthumb #vegetablegarden #urbangardening #urbanorganicgardener #organicgarden #gardening #urbangardenersrepublic #gardener #backyardgarden #harvest #kitchengarden #veggiegarden #growfood #ilovegardening #springfieldqld #eatlocal #amazinggardener #greenisthenewblack #plotaustralia #greaterspringfield #ipswich #discoveripswich #organicgardenermag See more

18.01.2022 When someone in your family is going through leukemia everything changes. The daily routine, sleep, medicine, hospital trips, weight, appetite, strength, mood, EVERYTHING. My APPRENTICE (4years) because of chemotherapy now has a weakened immune system and is at heightened risk of bacterial and viral infections. Soooooo you know all those health warning labels on potting mixes, composts, organic matter etc? It’s all crazily important now. He can’t come into contact with bare ...soil or organic matter (HELLOOOOOO OUR WHOLE BACKYARD) without wearing shoes or gloves and can’t breathe any particles in. Soooooo for a few weeks it felt like our whole yard and way of life was a ticking bomb. I was going to completely stop all composting but have been able to adjust and keep a few things ticking along. Firstly- I’m so glad I bought these @tumbleweedgardening composting bins. They are completely sealed to keep rodents and flies out, but in this circumstance are great because they also keep everything in! I feel comfortable with them in my garden still - an open bay would definitely not work for us anymore! My APPRENTICE used to come out and pop scraps in and turn the soil but obviously that’s all stopped - he’s lost a lot of strength and couldn’t physically do it anymore anyway. So now if I have scraps from the kitchen I’ve been walking out and popping them straight in myself. I don’t leave scraps laying in open bowls in the kitchen anymore either. Everything goes straight out. And if I don’t have time and some things go in the bin I try not to guilt myself. I’m doing the best I can. . . . . #compostbin #tumbleweed #gardeningaustralia #gardeningismytherapy #plotaustralia #composting #leukemia #cancer #discoverunder3k #cancerawareness See more

18.01.2022 Don’t you HATE it when people post oh I’ve got heaps of new followers lately so it’s about time I reintroduced myself .. with a maximum flattering photo on their grid... yeah sames Like HAVE YOU ACTUALLY GOT NEW FOLLOWERS??!!! Or is it just your Aunty Joan who only recently joined IG? I’m always suspicious. Anyway I’ve had about 17 new followers lately (thanks to the zinnia comp!) so obviously it’s highly crucial I post a pic of me casually leaning against my po...tting bench while my 4 year old apprentice does all the hard yakka. Cause we all know that’s how it goes righhhhhhhht?? ~ Rachel Leembruggen. I’ll just be over here gardening with my kids (or yours if you come to one of my workshops when life is a little more covid normal ) . . . 17.01.2022 My most favourite garden designers- Michael McCoy and how tragedy led to his passion

16.01.2022 Ipswich City Council is looking for community engagement for ways to reduce Ipswich's waste going to landfill. The average Ipswich household sends about 1 tonne of waste to landfill each year. We need to reduce that by 2025! You can help make a difference by completing Ipswich CIty Councils survey HERE https://shapeyouripswich.com.au/materials-recovery-plan... One suggestion I've made is requesting Ipswich City Council introduces a rebate for composting systems like Brisbane City Counci doesl. One of the big issues with composting is that people are deterred by the set up cost. Brisbane City Council makes purchasing a recycling system easier with their compost rebate program. The program provides eligible Brisbane residents a rebate of up to $70 off the purchase of eligible composting equipment. This would be great to have in Ipswich! In the last year I've spent $140 on two composters and it's HUGELY reduced the amount of rubbish I'm sending to landfill. A rebate for Ipswich residents would be great! Here's your chance to ask for one.

14.01.2022 This morning we will be on West Brenner Radio- around 6:45

13.01.2022 I’m so bitterly disappointed in this sunflower variety. I’ll NEVER grow it again. I wasn’t paying close attention at Bunnings; I wanted some sunflowers and saw this packet by Mr Fothergill’s - Sunflower Lemon Striker F1 with A robust medium height variety with multiple lemon yellow blooms on the packet and thought mmmmmm sounds good I’ll give it a go! Weeks later when they were growing strongly but not as tall as I’d expected- I read the packet again: POLLEN FREE I’m deva...stated. Normally my sunflowers are LADEN with bees every morning and at the end of their life the seeds are devoured by the birds - these won’t bring any of those benefits to the ecosystem. They are a sterile cultivated variety which have been genetically bred not to have any pollen so they aren’t messy dropping pollen on benchtops when used in floristry. I was so angry I nearly ripped them straight out before they’d flowered! But I’m leaving them be- and TRYING to enjoy the picture perfect flowers even though they just look too fake to me. Because they kind of are Like a man made diamond compared to the real deal. I’m so frustrated- do I have to check the back of packets on my seed varieties as well as my food packets now?!!!! ARGH! I get that for a small percentage of the population who have pollen allergies these would be helpful for cultivation but I really can’t see how they have a place in the standard garden. Visually they look great- but I’m counting this as a major garden fail on my part. . . . . #growyourown #organicgardening #homegrown #growyourownfood #urbangarden #growsomethinggreen #greenthumb #vegetablegarden #urbangardening #urbanorganicgardener #organicgarden #gardening #urbangardenersrepublic #gardener #backyardgarden #harvest #kitchengarden #veggiegarden #growfood #ilovegardening #springfieldqld #eatlocal #amazinggardener #greenisthenewblack #plotaustralia #greaterspringfield #ipswich #discoveripswich #organicgardenermag See more

11.01.2022 My trusty workbench is having a breather. I’ve decided to completely stop my online store and workshops until March at the earliest. I maaaay be releasing a select few of my Easter Plot Packs then (because I’ve got the stock on hand and it’s taking up storage space) but we will see. Mr Plot has also taken leave from his work for the next six months until we get through these first few stages of chemo treatment. It’s so taxing on us as a whole family - the younger boys don’t u...nderstand why Nate can’t wrestle and play anymore and why Mum or Dad is at the hospital or why they can’t do swimming lessons etc etc. So we are taking the space to alleviate as much pressure as we can so we come out at the end of this year together and as healthy and healed and whole (physically, emotionally, everything) as possible. I still plan to be active on social media though- sharing what we are doing in the garden as a family. It will look different this year but to be honest it’s kind of how Plot began four years ago- just journaling myself and my family growing up in the garden . . . . #leukemia #organicgardening #homegrown #growyourownfood #urbangarden #growsomethinggreen #greenthumb #vegetablegarden #urbangardening #urbanorganicgardener #organicgarden #gardening #urbangardenersrepublic #gardener #backyardgarden #harvest #kitchengarden #veggiegarden #growfood #ilovegardening #springfieldqld #eatlocal #amazinggardener #greenisthenewblack #plotaustralia #greaterspringfield #ipswich #discoveripswich #organicgardenermag See more

08.01.2022 SEPTEMBER SPRING HOLIDAYS- the perfect weather for garden play . I’ll bet you’ve been doing extra online shopping lately (guilty) so chances are you’ll have some mailing boxes laying around. Cut some different sized slots in them and throw the cardboard boxes in the garden- get your kids working on some literal snail mail! You can pop some pens out for them to write messages on leaves to the fairies at the bottom of the garden or just let them grab handfuls of leaves, sticks..., whatever to mail. Hopefully this gives you time to get some garden jobs done- just kidding- sit back and have a cuppa! 07.01.2022 Time to rebuild the community

07.01.2022 Here’s hoping!

06.01.2022 Raid Your Recycling Bin! (aka common household items that help you grow your own plants from seed)

06.01.2022 SCORCHER! 34C degrees forecast in Springfield tomorrow. Summer is starting Here’s how to help get your garden through: Give any trees under 3 years of age a big soak of water sometime this month if we don’t get decent rain (more than 20mm). I turn the hose onto a trickle and lay it at the base of each tree and set a timer then move it onto the next one. A deep slow watering encourages the roots to go down and not hang about on the hot dry surface. ... Annual and perennial flowers will obviously need increased watering. I try my best to water ASAP in the morning (like before 6am- my kids know if they wake early to come and find me outside). If you have any plant varieties that are thriving in the heat; take note and plant more of those next year! It’s hot weather to be mulching (we do our garden bed top ups in early spring for this reason) but if your beds don’t have around 3cm depth of mulch APPLY IT NOW! I like to use sugar cane mulch which is easy to sprinkle from a bag and helps with retaining moisture in your soil. Shift any plants in black plastic pots out of the direct sunlight - that kind of temperature can really cook roots in pots that hold the heat. Stay hydrated yourself . . . . . . #growsomethinggreen #ipswichqld #springfieldqld #greaterspringfield #kitchengarden #watering #organicgardening #gardeningaustralia #urbangardenersrepublic #gardenersofinstagram #brisbanegardens #springfieldlakes See more

04.01.2022 In the meantime before the miracle. It’s a terrible place to be. It’s Abraham and Sarah battling with infertility for years. (Genesis 11).... It’s Moses mother pushing the basket with her son onto the river. (Exodus 2). It’s marching around the walls of Jericho for 6 days. (Joshua 6). It’s Daniel spending the night in the dark in the lions den. (Daniel 6). It’s working hard and seeing nothing to gain for it. (Luke 5). It’s being in a boat in the middle of the storm. (Matthew 8). It’s Lazarus dead in the tomb for four days. (John 11). It’s Jesus on the cross. No one wants to be there. We all beg if there is any other way. We pray for the miracle. But it’s the meantime that’s hard. Terrible. Heartbreaking. All that I know is that God is there too. Maybe even more so. In the meantime. God in the hard times. God through the hard times. When we read the miracles it’s so easy to skim past the meantime. Sometimes they are days. Sometimes they are years. But they show us that we can get through. That it’s not forever. That miracles change things in a moment. If you are waiting in the meantime. I get it. We are waiting too. And God meets us here. *Photo taken before Nate (4 years) was diagnosed with leukemia*

02.01.2022 I’d love to grow flowers but I don’t have space and it’s too expensive! Check out my small scale Plot. Sure it’s not a field full of billowing flowers that you’ll see on Instagram. But it’s a heck of a lot better than our ugly shed used to be! Totally doable for less than the cost of a supermarket bunch of flowers. You’ll be cutting from them for months- and perfectly suited to renters too! 02.01.2022 My first crop of Sunflowers for the season are finishing up. These were Mr Fothergills ‘Lemon Strike’. They were beautiful but I’ll NEVER grow them again as I didn’t realise they’ve been genetically bred to be pollen free. So fairly useless for the bees and not beneficial for my pollinator garden. Live and learn! Next crop I’m growing is some left over Sunflower seeds from the Woolworths Discovery promotion last year. Hopefully the seeds will still be viable- they were abso...lutely incredible last year so I can’t wait until they germinate (a few are poking their heads up after 4 days so ). The packet didn’t have the variety name on them but I’m pretty sure they were Russian giant.
