25.01.2022 Handstand is an excellent companion training for pole dancers. It is great for developing pushing strength which helps balance out all that pulling we do in pole, it helps improve your inverted body awareness, aaand it is super fun. . Handstand is a great movement to include in your pole preparation and can be easily scaled according to your current level of ability. . Til next time, Be Free In Your Pole.... . x Selina . 25.01.2022 Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) does not only affect mothers and seniors. The youngest patients Ive had to address SUI with were in their early 20s. Naturally, the reasons for SUI in never-given-birth people are different and one possibility is excessive or inappropriate abdominal exercises. . Your abs and your pelvic floor are meant to work together. If your pelvic floor cannot counter the forces of your abs and this persists overtime, it can succumb and contributes... to SUI. . Signs that your pelvic floor may not be keeping up includes: . Leaking during workout Feeling like you might leak whilst youre working out A sudden need to pee at the end of class (when youre tired) or training power moves . If you experience any of these, be sure to book an appointment with your local womens health physiotherapist. Do a Google search and pop in any of these keywords and your city, suburb, or simply use the near me option. . Keywords: Womens health physio Pelvic floor physio Pelvic floor rehab Pelvic health physio Mens health physio. Yes, men can have SUI, too. . Til next time, Be Free In Your Pole. . x Selina . 23.01.2022 Whilst most people know and understand that a weak muscle cant do their job well, it is not as widely known that an overactive muscle also cant do their job properly! Try this: clench your fingers and make a clawed hand, keep them clenched and now type on your computer or play on your phone, it doesnt really work, does it? . If your Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) is a result a muscle overactivity, then doing more pelvic floor exercise may actually make it worse! W...hich is why identifying the unique reasons for your SUI is critical in the successful treatment for it. . Til next time, Be Free In Your Pole. . x Selina . This information is not medical advice. 11.01.2022 On this day in 2014 I competed in the Queensland Pole Championship and I was a Sugar Mama. This was my 4th pole comp and I started to feel less uncomfortable about the whole thing and even started to have some awareness on stage! . For the first time I wasnt just running on adrenaline. In fact, I was right there with the moment. I remember the opening sequence leading up to this dip feeling twice as long as normal, and because it felt slow I was able to think about m...ore aspects of my movement and try to finesse what I could instead of it being purely on muscle memory. . It dawned on me afterwards that each comp Ive entered, whether I did well or not, was forging and polishing the diamond in me so that one day I could shine as brightly as I do in my dreams. . 10.01.2022 On this day in 2013 I competed in the Queensland Pole Championship. I actually never stopped to ask myself if I wanted to enter another comp. I simply entered on auto pilot cos thats kinda what you do once you started doing comps. You see it announced, mark it in your diary, download the form, pick a song and start piecing it together. . I was busy running my physio clinic so I wasnt taking pole class and didnt even train regularly. I really was in no position to e...nter any comp. But my ego still wanted the limelight and specifically, my ego needed at least one f*ck off trick to keep itself feeling adequate so I included this very squished Spatchcock. I had no consistency with it at all and was only sticking it about 25% of the time. Fortunately for me I stuck it on the night and the crowd went off! Whilst my ego was satisfied, it really was a poor decision cos it added tonnes of unnecessary stress to already hectic comp stress and I cant say I enjoyed my time on stage. . When I choreographed my routine for Miss Pole Dance QLD after that, I only put in tricks I could easily do and know how to save should things go wrong. I was able to focus on my performance and I thoroughly enjoyed the moment even though I fell out of the Eagle right at the end of my show, but thats a story for another time. . 08.01.2022 The Handspring, aka Split Grip Ayesha, is a goal trick for a lot of pole dancers. Not only does the Handspring offer a great sense of achievement, it also opens the door to a lot of fun tricks, combos, and transitions. It is certainly one of those rite of passage tricks and many polers are keen to get started on it. But how do you know youre ready to start Handspring training? Let me show you the road map! . Handspring is a complex pole trick that demands high movement capac...ity from the poler. What is movement capacity? It is a term I use to describe the sum of your mobility, strength, coordination, body awareness, spatial awareness, skill, endurance, motor control, plus knowledge of the movement. In pole, knowledge of movement means your understanding of the mechanics of the pole trick youre trying to do: contact points, push-pull levers, weight distribution, order of movement etc. Handspring is a complex movement that demands a high level of movement capacity from the poler. . Herere 4 key factors I want to highlight regarding Handspring training. To be able to do a Handspring, you must have: . 08.01.2022 Some people clench their muscles as part of their response to stress and anxiety, this can most certainly affect your pelvic floor muscles and contribute to Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI). . Pole is hard work so there can be lots of normal squeezing and clenching and this could masks an underlying SUI or worsens an existing one. . Your pelvic health physio can help you distinguish between whats normal pelvic floor function and whats not.
