13.01.2022 Over the weekend a parent confided in me that during the shutdown there was an incident with her 15 month old. The Little Miss, exploratory and inquisitive in her own backyard, ended up upside down in an ordinary, run-of-the-mill 9L bucket which was half full of rain water. For the briefest period while mum wasnt looking, unaware that the bucket was even there, Little Miss was submerged. After hearing something being knocked over, mum was alerted to the situation. She ran... to Little Miss and amongst all the panic and fright, Little Miss had in fact held her breath. Mum told me that without swimming lessons, things could have been very different. But as a result of her skills, and some fairly close post-incident monitoring by her parents, she was fine. Children will, and always have, found the wonder in water. And if coming to The Pond for lessons for a few months leading up to that day has been the difference, then that makes us all just a little bit more proud of what we do. To the parent in question, thank you for allowing me to share this story. The range of emotions attached - panic, fear, relief, blame, shame - the realisation of how quickly this can happen and everything in between, are a welcome reminder to all of us about the importance of water safety. Little Miss continues to have a love of water and swimming on Saturday was just as before. I love a happy ending.

That's roughly 40% of the global population and means that around 289,000 children under five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. That's almost 800 children per day, or one child every two minutes. We agree...thats really crap! So The Pond Swim Centre is proudly providing our members with an essential consumable from a company that donates 50% of its profits to help build toilets and improve sanitation in the developing world. We love people who help people.
