19.01.2022 Hey there Press loving peeps, in light of the recent reports of COVID-19 cases in Jesmond, Lambton, Wallsend and in Lake Macquarie, along with NSW State Government ‘strongly encouraging' the wearing of masks in cafes, restaurants, bars and when using public transport, we will be making some precautions to respond to this new information. It's hard to imagine how you would wear a mask while drinking a coffee, a beer or devouring a delicious toasty or pie, so from today we have... made the decision to provide service form the font of the shop; order at the door and pick up your order from the take away window. For the time being we feel this is the most appropriate approach, we will keep you informed when there is an update to these changes. We support all levels of Government as they try to manage this virus, we need to minimise risk to our amazing staff and customers. Newy has been pretty lucky thus far, let's work together to ensure Newcastle doesn’t become part of those 'hot spot' statistics we see nightly on the news. Be safe, mask-up if you need to, sanitise, remember to distance where you can and keep smiling; we can do this. :-) Thank you for your continued support and understanding. We will do book searches for you, email, phone or message us and we'll get back to you in a snap!

17.01.2022 This week we bid farewell to Frankenstein, a wretched, tortured, rejected and unlovable soul. It was really good to see some new faces this week at BBC, some via Zoom and some fireside at The Press. We were torn though on which protagonist was the real villain... Dr Frankenstein or his desperate and vengeful creature. Our book for next month (Tuesday August 4th) is Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969). A sensitive autobiographical piece which was banned in... schools and libraries due to its depiction of childhood rape, racism and sexuality. If you can’t get your hands on a hard copy, you can down load a ebook copy through AppleBooks, Audible and there was a made for TV movie released in 1979 featuring Diahann Carroll with Constance Good playing Maya. See you on the 4th, join us on Zoom if you can’t be there in person. We’re introducing a table mic to enhance the volume of the voices in the room. See you soon! #BBC #BannedBooks #MayaAngelou #IKnowWhyTheCagedBirdSings

15.01.2022 We can no longer offer camping options @thepressbookhouse. To allow everyone a chance to have a cup of their favourite brew, we are limiting sit downs to 30 minutes. No meetings, job interviews or school reunions etc until COVID is no longer a thing. ... Please use your office / library / walks / home or larger venues for longer catch ups. #nocamping #covidsafe #hashtag

14.01.2022 The Banned Book Club returns Tuesday November 3 @ 7pm. The classic story by Harper Lee - To Kill a Mockingbird is up for discussion - a story, set in America's south, of class, race, equality and inequality in the 1930's. Banned for the depiction of violence, offensive language, and racism we will discuss the necessity of books such as these, where the narrative drives us to be better humans, so poignant all over the world especially today as America heads to the polls Join us in person or via Zoom (link will be posted the day before).

10.01.2022 At the #thepressbookhouse, we want to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 Pandemic. We wanted to take a moment to reassure you that we are practising the following to ensure you remain safe; - Good hygiene, regularly washing and sanitising our hands, wearing gloves during food preparation. Sanitising immediately after handling cash. - Cleaning all surfaces regularly with disinfectant, including tables, chairs and any hard surfaces. - Adhering to social dista...ncing measures (1 person per 4 square metres). - Introducing touch-less check-ins with our QRcode. - Requesting that customers only enter the shop when they can see there is no one already being served at the counter. If there is a customer currently being served, to wait until that customer has either signed in and moved into the shop to sit down, to look at books, or has continued back outside to wait for their order(s). - Requesting that customers try not to handle books unless they're intending to purchase. We ask is that if you are feeling unwell or have travelled to Newcastle from a known COVID-19 hotspot to please reschedule your visit to The Press. Cheers! Chez, Michael, Ben, Nico, Mick, Liam and Lucy

08.01.2022 Saw this little keeper on the dash of a camper just now.... On The Road is a defining work of the postwar Beat and Counterculture generations, with its protagonists living against a backdrop of jazz, poetry, and drug use.

03.01.2022 It’s true, we miss the era of the ‘Keep Cup’ and the progress made towards reducing landfill - but is this the most pressing issue right now? As a cafe, our biggest issue is appropriate social distancing, people waiting their turn to enter the shop, and people not signing the customer register (or scanning the QR code). These are our biggest concerns as we strive to keep our staff and customers safe, while ensuring we meet council’s COVID compliance measures. The Press Book... House is totally committed to reducing the impact of takeaway cups (and lids) on the environment. We use only compostable paper cups and our current take on keep cups is that ‘if it’s clean we’re keen’. What are your thoughts on #cafedunk? would you be happy to soak your keep cup in a communal bucket of sanitation fluid? We’re happy to take your lead on this one, as ultimately this is your call.
