25.01.2022 It is time to address the problem of domestic violence for the sake of all victims- it is not only women who are subjected to it. In Australia, at least 1 in 3 victims of family violence is male. There is one male victim of domestic homicide every 10 days, representing 38% of all victims. Why then are men not included in any of the government funded anti-violence programs except as perpetrators? For more information and statistics go to: ... oneinthree.com.au See more
24.01.2022 Today we remember as Armistice Day, when the Germans finally surrendered to end the slaughter of World War I, but it was also a fateful day for Australia's most famous bushranger Ned Kelly. Read all about it on my blog: www.thepromontory.net.au
23.01.2022 Check out my new post on the website: http://www.thepromontory.net.au about one of the great wits of the 20th century- Will Rogers. He died 80 years ago this month, but is still remembered for lines like: "Everything is funny, as long as it's happening to somebody else."... After visiting the Louvre Museum in Paris, he sent a postcard of the famous armless statue of the "Venus de Milo", to his young niece with a note saying: "See what happens to you, if you don't stop biting your fingernails"

21.01.2022 A 27 yo London barrister, Charlotte Proudman, sent a Linked-in message enclosing her photograph, to a 57 yo solicitor, Alexander Carter-Silk. He responded by saying: "I appreciate that this is probably horrendously politically incorrect, but that is a stunning picture". Her reaction was explosive, describing his message as"sexist", "offensive" and "unacceptable and misogynistic behaviour". He promptly apologised but she publicly named and shamed him, by posting the exchange on social media. It now emerges that Proudman previously posted comments on Facebook profile pages of men, reacting to their photographs by calling one "hot stuff" and writing "Oooo lala" under another. Talk about hypocritical double standards. She is free to write sexist comments about photos of men, but any man who compliments her is publicly crucified.
18.01.2022 Did you know that in 240BC, a Greek astronomer called Eratosthenes, calculated the circumference of the earth to within 1% of the correct figure. Read more about this amazing man at: www.thepromontory.net.au
18.01.2022 600 years ago today, King Henry V achieved one of the great victories of English history at the Battle of Agincourt against the vastly superior numbers of the French army. What has been largely ignored is that his success was only achieved after committing one of the worst war-crimes in history. Read the details in my blog: www.thepromontory.net.au
16.01.2022 Women account for 69% of the breakups in marriages that ended in divorce according to the latest research published by the American Sociological Association. The reasons are of course complex and controversial, but there is no doubt that many women see themselves as benefiting financially by leaving their wealthier partners. The big question is whether they end up better off in the long term.
15.01.2022 I have returned after a break over Christmas / New Year with a fascinating story of a real-life mystery involving the queen of mystery, Agatha Christie. The best-selling author disappeared for nearly 2 weeks in December 1926, before being recognised living under an assumed name in a hotel. See my blog for the full story.
12.01.2022 Police in London have called off their 24 hour surveillance of Julian Assange after he spent the last three years inside the Ecuadorian Embassy to avoid being extradited to Sweden for questioning over allegations of sexually assaulting two women. What's the bet he tries to make a run for it? For the full story, open my blog page: www.thepromontory.net.au
11.01.2022 The Victorian Government is legislating to allow offspring to access the names of sperm and egg donors, whether or not the donors consent to it and even if their donations were made decades ago, under agreements that guaranteed their anonymity. There are donors who are happy to acknowledge their progeny, but for the overwhelming majority the legislation is an unjustifiable invasion of their privacy. The reform is particularly devastating for men whose sperm was donated for "medical research" and used to help thousands of grateful couples who would otherwise have been left childless. Faced with such public disclosures, no-one will be prepared to donate anything for the increasing numbers of infertile couples.
09.01.2022 Closer military ties with China have been announced following the visit to Australia by the Chinese Chief of General Staff, Fang Fenghui. (pictured with our Air Chief Marshall Mark Biskin). What is remarkable is that General Fang's visit included an inspection of the ADF's high-security Joint Operations Command facility outside Canberra which was not announced to anyone in the Australian media before it happened, but it was well-attended by several Chinese media representatives, who had been specifically invited. I wonder what our American allies think of it all?
06.01.2022 Turnbull wins 54/44. The margin was largely attributed to Julie Bishop's decision as Deputy Leader to abandon Abbott as Prime Minister.
