09.01.2022 Looking for a machine that can clean up the rest of your patch and find those tiny crumbs you dont want to leave behind? VLF technology with its continuous wave of frequency output has always been regarded as the best technology to tackle this task. This is due to the way it receives feedback from the target allowing it to differentiate lower conductivity alloys from the ground around them such as tiny gold nuggets. However not all VLF machines are equipped for this task so ...there is a few key factors to look out for, especially when detecting in our Australian goldfields. In Australia, particularly in WA we have extremely high levels of conductive elements in our soil such as iron. This makes it very difficult for machines to distinguish the difference between a gold target and the natural ground around it. This is where a measurement of decay in conductivity (ground balancing) comes into play. Machines like the Garrett AT range have a fantastic ground balancing system. The Garrett AT max has 175 points of high resolution ground balance and an auto ground balance window. The machine allows for fluctuation in conductivity and sets its ground balance to several points either way of its original reading. This creates the most stable detection out of any VLF machine we have operated in the goldfields. However it is not only up to the ground balance the machine must also operate on an appropriate KHZ, the higher the KHz the better it will pick up lower conductivity targets. This means the machine will also be more susceptible to the natural minerals in the soil and if the KHz is too high then it will be far to erratic and noisy when detecting. In turn the lower the KHz the more depth you will get on your larger higher conductivity nuggets but you might miss those little scraps that all add up. So whats the best KHz of operation for a machine in our goldfields?? Through trialling almost every machine available we have worked out that between 10-20khz is the sweet spot for us. This range allows for great depth and sensitivity but is not too susceptible to the natural soil that it will spoil your capabilities with the unit. So this brings us to our recommendation from our personal research into the most capable VLF for gold. A machine that will clean up all those little pickers you dont want to miss but will still hear the big bits we are all after as well. The Garrett AT MAX is our number 1 pick! See more
