25.01.2022 When your muscles say youre happy, youre more likely to have positive experiences in the world around you. So while Im no advocate for "fake-it-til-you-make-it" masking, facing up to the challenges with a smile? Thats actually a pretty good idea.

25.01.2022 Simple questions. If youre answering "no" for two or more of these, get in touch for support. Youre not alone and you dont have to do it on your own.

25.01.2022 Saturday = Weird board games day. What games do you play? I was horrified to find that, when we moved into our new house last month, we have 2 sideboards and a hutch and they're all *full* of games!! (NO room for the crockery I've been looking after for years!! *cough* *hoarding* *cough* You can see the family priorities here ) But it's fun. This surprisingly good game is all about birds - including Aussie birds! What games do you like playing?

25.01.2022 Yep, Ill take this today :)

24.01.2022 Remember how we used to develop photos from negatives? Yeah. That.

23.01.2022 And if realistic goals means do marathon training, then do that. And if it means getting up, having a shower, and remembering to have lunch, thats fine too. Yeah? (Who wants to guess which one Im more likely to do??)

23.01.2022 Whats one of the worst words in the English language that starts with *sh*? "Should", right? "I *should* write that report." "I *should* be calmer with the kids."... "I *should* be better than this!" Its such an unobtrusive little sound - but with decades of life experience it starts carrying this real weight of guilt and obligation and perfectionism, yes? So how about we try replacing it with "could"? Say these out loud to yourself: "I *could* write that report." "I *could* be calmer with the kids." "I *could* be better than this?" Can you feel that difference there? A bit of a gap? *Thats* what I help people create. A gap between us and the thoughts and feelings that can hijack us, so we can create peace and calm; get present with our loved ones; and have the space and energy to get on with doing what matters for the people who matter. So next time you notice that youre running yourself down, catch the "should" and try "could" instead. And then consider: What *will* you do next?

22.01.2022 We might get caught up in the storms and pressures or darkness of life, and get thrown into survival mode. But like seeds that get planted and push through the darkness, we too can open up to new possibilities and grow and thrive in the light of day. Do you want to talk about what has been seeded in you that will grow and thrive in the days ahead? Get in touch - [email protected].

21.01.2022 Folks, Im still struggling to choose a decent cover photo for this page! Wanna help? I like icons at the moment because of the way they can communicate big ideas in short times (and yes, the ones in the bottom image I drew). Which one do you like best? 1 or 2?

21.01.2022 Sunrise - who would you get up for? There are only two types of people I get up before dawn for: My children, and my clients. (And while I'm happy to see both, only my clients get a cheery smile and conversation at this time of day!!) Who would you get up before dawn for?

21.01.2022 Here's a piece I was interviewed for recently. What are your best stress relief tips?

21.01.2022 When financial strain comes a-callin', there are things that help. What food tips would you add?

20.01.2022 One for the dog fans this morning!

19.01.2022 #workfail The face you make when you realise you've left your webcam behind when you've moved house and you've got a client call in 20 minutes and no time to go back to the old flat to get it!!! *Make do, moving on* Thank goodness for dodgy laptop cameras!!

19.01.2022 Good to know Im not the only one!!

18.01.2022 Best armchairs ever ideas please! I am getting so very close to finally having my own home office! I love meeting with you all in cafes etc (or from the convenience of my dining table and webcam), but theres going to be something so very pleasant about being able to invite you into my own (bug-safe) space! Now heres my question - I want comfy armchairs. Anyone got any suggestions?

17.01.2022 Poll: Whats the best piece of advice youve heard for dealing with these difficult times? . . . I used to focus on getting three important things done each day. Now I do two. And sometimes, one of those things is just lunch.

16.01.2022 What's a good thing that's happened for you over the last week? Something you're thankful for? My family and I just moved and we've had the joy of playing host to a young family of magpies in our backyard. Not only have we had baby "Maggie" and "Fluffy" (as named by my daughters) squawk around after their patient and attentive parents, we've been watching them learn to fly. From little flaps and hops up onto the shed steps or the rose bush (which seriously is so old it's more like a tree!), to longer practice runs - and the occasional undignified flap-flip-crash-upsidedown, followed by the terribly dignified beak-up-statue pose: *nothing to see here, move along please human mother!* Anyone want to see a photo? (Or 20, honestly. They're sooo cute!!)

16.01.2022 If you could go on holiday right now (and honestly, who doesnt want one??!) - what 3 things absolutely have to go with you? (And phones dont count!) Me? Book. Sketch book and water colour pencils. (Oh, and husband ;) ) What about you?

16.01.2022 Who's interested? It's up and ready for downloading!

15.01.2022 Is anyone here planning to come along to the Climate Pastoral Care conference online next week? Ive been looking forward to it for months! It sounds like theres going to be a fair-sized group coming along to my workshop on how to confidently have a truly transformative climate-related conversation in 20 minutes - today I (finally) got a chance to finish my pre-recording for those who cant make it live. Id love you to come check the line-up! (And my next challenge? Getting the recording uploaded in Dropbox! The internet had not been liking me this afternoon....)

15.01.2022 Hi folks, I'm spending the day updating my Stressmas Advent calendar - BUG edition - and I want to make sure I'm addressing all the new pain points of this season before I release it tomorrow. What concerns have you heard people share about Christmas this year?

13.01.2022 Happy tears. Sad tears. Either way, they help us feel better. Let's use 'em! (My daughter is 15 minutes away from finishing primary school!! )

13.01.2022 Wise words today :)

12.01.2022 With just 2 one hour sessions, folks were able to get lasting change dealing with some of the most difficult emotional experiences people carry around with them all the time. Read on! One of the things you might note around here is the lack of testimonials - Im a psychologist, and by law were not permitted to use them. What do we prefer using more, though?? Research! Comparing one treatment to another, or care-as-normal, testing it to see what improvements happen, and ...then using those strategies in our work. Heres a great piece about some great work one of my colleagues did recently using the type of training I do - with just 2 one hour sessions, folks were able to get lasting change dealing with some of the most difficult emotional experiences people carry around with them all the time. You should check it out (its not too technobabbly)! People were randomly allocated to either the "test" group or the "control" group. They talked about their wellbeing and experiences, accepted 2 hours of 1:1 work, then reviewed their wellbeing again. How much, do you think, of the test group, should show improvements? 10%? 20%? Try NINETY. Yes, *90%* of the test group noticed significant improvements after just 2 hours work. And these gains were maintained. For MONTHS. Compared to how much in the control group?9%. What does that mean? This stuff works. And you dont need a lot of fancy tools or books or mindset work - just someone who knows what theyre doing.

10.01.2022 "Its not the place you left, you know." "Neither am I." Im absolutely knackered today. So am chilling on the couch with my eldest as she watches the special features from The Deathly Hallows part 2, and as a result caught this lovely exchange in the deleted scenes. Its between the recently rescued-from-captivity Luna and Harry, as she prepares to leave Shell Cottage to return to Hogwarts school (where more of her captors are):... Harry: Its not the place you left, you know. Luna: Neither am I. How might it look, for us to summon a similar kind of quiet acceptance and confidence in returning to a place of pressure? When things keep changing, might we keep changing, too? It might not be a perfect reality or perfect representation of what we planned - but can we still capture the essentials while flexing to fit the circumstance? [Pic by my 8yo daughter. Who else can tell at a glance who shes drawn?]

09.01.2022 For those folks who just heard me speak at the Climate Pastoral Care conference, heres where you go to find the ebook (and if you missed it and want it anyway?? It will still make sense.)

09.01.2022 Who else needed to hear this today?

09.01.2022 Me [imagining talking to my cheeky children about Uni options]: Im a master. Miss S: Master of what? Me: Master of psychology. Miss S: Do you get a sword?... Me: ....No? Miss S: Can you shoot lightning? Me: No... Miss A: Steal a TARDIS? Me: No, I help people understand how their minds and bodies work, so they feel better and get more stuff done. Miss S: Then youre a bit of a boring master, arent you? Me: (In her defense, Miss S may well not be quite so blunt... but shes got a cheeky streak a mile wide and it comes out frequently! I fully expect to have this conversation sooner rather than later lol.)

06.01.2022 THIS. What are some healthy coping methods youre using at the moment?

05.01.2022 Monday morning reminder :)

04.01.2022 Who needs to hear this today? "Im not going to give up on you. I know youve got a different song to sing than the one youve been carrying all this time. Its hard to break free. But hold on a little longer, because you never know whats around the next corner. If you could see what I can see, youd see that youre closer than youve ever been before..."

04.01.2022 Sometimes yes, the process of grit and resilience and recovery feels like one great big mess. But these are the tools we draw on to keep going.

04.01.2022 I agree. Do you?

04.01.2022 And its a quiet night in for me in while my husband and kids are out for the evening! Now... what shall I watch while I have sole control of the remote control... tell me some of your favorites!

04.01.2022 Need a map to get through those challenging conversations? Its RUOK? day here in Oz, where we demystify how to have those challenging conversations when we sense that someone close to us is struggling, whether or not they have yet sensed it themselves. It can be scary to try to have those conversations, though, so we often put them off, or leave them to others to do. But it doesnt have to be scary. Heres my map.... 1. Choose your conversations location sensitively, when neither of you are too busy, tired, distracted, or likely to be interrupted. 2. Slow down, look them in the eye, pause, and listen. 3. Youre seeking answers about how theyre feeling and how theyre coping - which means youre asking questions, not giving opinions. PRO TIP: We have two eyes, two ears, and one mouth. USE THEM IN THAT PROPORTION! 4. Once youve clarified whats going on for them, offer encouragement and support. 5. Then build trust and follow up - ask if you can check in with them again, and DO IT. It might take one, two, three tries - but if you keep showing up and showing you care, theyre much more likely to trust you and share whats going on. Let me know if this helps!

03.01.2022 Now this is a great idea! Tiny physical cues and reminders to meaningful action.

02.01.2022 Tell me, fellow coffee lovers - what type of coffee should I try at home next?

01.01.2022 I completely agree. What do you think?
