21.01.2022 Today I went to Coles to pick up a couple of essentials only to find empty shelves & stressed people, so I thought this topic may be of some help. Stress, Fear ...& your Immune System. Fear is a natural human emotion that is triggered by a perceived threat. It is a basic survival mechanism that signals our bodies to respond to danger with a fight or flight response. As such, it is an essential part of keeping us safe. Fear weakens our immune system and can cause cardiovascular issues, gastrointestinal problems such as ulcers & irritable bowel syndrome, and decreased fertility. It can lead to accelerated ageing & many other nasties. There is a link between brain activity, linking negative emotions to a lower immune response & an increased risk of inflammation which may leave you susceptible to colds, flu or virus. We are all surrounded by potentially harmful bacteria and viruses all the time, and yet we usually stay well. Thats because of the amazing system we have to fend off attacks from invaders. We are born with an immune system that enables us to survive in this world we inhabit. Look after yours. I suggest that you stay as healthy as possible keeping warming spices like ginger, turmeric, cinnamon and chilli in your diet. Keep exercising and keep anxiety to a minimum. Wash your Hands Eat real foods lots of fresh veges, fruits, grass fed meat. Read some of my other posts regarding healthy eating. Lets hope tomorrow that there will be supplies for me too. Being Healthy Feels Good. Alison

20.01.2022 Happy Healthy over 50 We are living longer. The life expectancy in 1970 was 69 years for a man and 75.3 years for a woman. By 2011 this had increased to 79 years for men and 82.8 for women. But what the statistics don’t describe is how well we are living. In 2017 a Cambridge University study found that almost half of over 65s take at least 5 different drugs a day, with only 7 percent taking no drugs at all. It seems the cost of longevity has been our vitality; we are living l...onger but as a result are suffering with more disease. At the clinic, I meet patients who are resigned to their difficulties as they say; It’s my age I guess I have to put up with it. This is an assumption I always like to turn on its head, it simply doesn’t have to be this way. There’s no reason to put up with a mixture of accumulating niggles that may eventually become unmanageable if they can be dealt with and laid to rest right now. I work to change the perspective on the phrase; ‘It’s just my age’. What we all need is longevity with vitality feeling vital, that sparkling joyful energy is what makes longevity worth striving for, at any age! Having some kind of purpose in life, we all need something to strive/look forward to, ideally this can be something you have a passion for but even if it’s ‘just a job’; don’t underestimate the importance of making a contribution to the world. Retirement can be a difficult time even a lonely time if there’s nothing to replace that sense of purpose gained from working. A hobby or even volunteering can give you a sense of purpose. We need at least one close connection in life, this could be; your partner, sibling, friend or even your therapist. ‘A problem shared is a problem halved’, and it’s true that at times we all need to offload and feel the connection of being needed by another or even be the one that is needed. In addition to this, there is an inherent human desire to be part of a group. This may be within the community, as part of a club or extended family. Belonging, somewhere makes us feel connected to the larger social world around us. Otherwise we can begin to feel isolated & alone. 20.01.2022 Colour is radiant luminous energy. Colour therapy has been used for healing by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. When we are denied sunlight, depression, insomnia, alcoholism and suicidal tendencies may increase. Exposure to sunlight can affect moods, hormones and fertility. Just being in nature and relaxing under the blue sky, or in turquoise water and shimmering greens of nature can affect moods and health. We can select clothing to invoke moods, or decorate with pa...Continue reading

14.01.2022 A little more on immune health. 10 easy things to help make a difference for a happy Immune: Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in ... vitamins A, C and E such as; kiwi fruits, papaya, capsicum, pineapple, broccoli, brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, kale, spinach and sunflower seeds. Try to have them raw or slightly steamed as cooking kills vitamins. Eat foods rich in selenium and zinc: Brazil nuts, tuna, shrimps, sardines, salmon, turkey, chicken, lamb, chickpeas, pumpkin seeds, cashews and lentils. Get your daily fix of vitamin D. Nothing beats natural sunshine, (just not in the heat of the day) foods to include; salmon, herring, sardines, cod liver oil, eggs, mushrooms. Dont forget your omega-3 fatty acids, . Best are the SMASH fish: salmon, mackerel, anchovies, sardines, herrings. . Nuts and seeds (such as flaxseed, chia seeds, and walnuts) Add to your cooking kitchen herbs and spices : they are antimicrobials, especially black pepper, cayenne pepper, oregano, rosemary, sage, turmeric, thyme. Some other potent antimicrobial foods are garlic, ginger, horseradish, onion, lemon and Manuka honey. Sleep enough. It is estimated that we need seven to eight hours of sleep every night. It is all the more so important in winter, it is the time when the body repairs itself and fights infections. Exercise and/or spend time outside. Helps to strengthen your immune system. In case you caught a cough with mucus, stay away from dairy products and bananas, as they are mucus-forming foods. Being Healthy Feels Good

14.01.2022 As a Traditional Herbalist, I work with the bodys natural ability to heal itself. This healing ability, known as the vis medicatrix naturae (the healing power of nature)has been recognised in many different cultures and by and healers throughout history. Ever had a cut thats healed? Thats your bodys own healing ability at work!! Plant medicines can be used to provide symptomatic relief or to address deeper actors. Sometimes, when our bodies become overwhelmed by illness..., our healing ability becomes exhausted and inefficient and we can develop chronic and long-term problems or disease. By restoring and invigorating the vis medicatrix naturae, herbal medicine may help to encourage our body to heal itself. Simple plant remedies may provide many soothing solutions to uncomfortable symptoms. A qualified Herbalist will always look to understand the cause of a condition, not just suggest quick-fix symptomatic relief. A Herbalist will treat each person as an individual, not as a condition or disease. Since ancient times, it has been recognised that many facets of our lives may contribute to our well-being, as well as to our ill health! These include the food and drink we consume, amounts and type of exercise we do, the amount and quality of sleep we get, as well as our emotional health. As holistic practitioners, herbalists consider all of these factors, and more, and work with each individual to help restore health. Herbal medicines, prescribed by a qualified Herbalist are always uniquely formulated for the individual patient. Send me a message or give me a call if you have a problem that may be helped by Herbal Medicine.

12.01.2022 Why I Love Spirulina Reasons why I have been taking Spirulina daily for 27 years This multi cellular algae is one of the oldest plants in the world, with a history stretching back some three thousand million years. It is so well adapted to life in the alkaline water that it has remained virtually without evolutionary change since long before insects, fish or mammals appeared on the surface of the earth, as fossils found in Transvaal prove....Continue reading

11.01.2022 Helping Arthritis With Herbal Medicine Problems affecting the joints can often respond well to treatment with herbal medicine. The underlying damage to the joint cannot be reversed, but many people find that they can reduce the level of painkillers they are taking, have more pain free days,... reduce levels of stiffness and increase mobility Osteoarthritis The most common condition affecting the joints is osteoarthritis (OA), sometimes known as wear and tear. A degenerative disease, in which the cartilage at the ends of the bones forming a joint gradually becomes thinner. Eventually the bony surfaces come into contact and the bones begin to thicken and become misshapen. Sometimes there is abnormal outgrowth of cartilage at the end of the bone that becomes hardened forming little spurs of bone called osteophytes. Can be very painful. Previous injury to a joint, wear and tear due to increasing age, overuse of weight bearing exercise (joggers beware!), & weight gain placing extra stress on joints such as knees and hips. Most people find that their joints are worse in damp cold weather, and that heat, in the form of a hot bath or water bottle, can help. Usually a doctor will prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to help with pain and any inflammation. However, many people find that these drugs can upset their digestive systems and it is not uncommon for antacids to be prescribed alongside them. Herbal medicine can help here, too: herbal medicine, as a tincture or as a tea, may help to settle digestion & with specific herbs for their anti-inflammatory effects. For those with severe OA, a visit to a qualified Herbalist may produce the best results. Osteopathy, as well as acupuncture may also assist with pain relief and reduction of further damage. Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, also causes joint problems, but the cause is very different to OA. It is a chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune disease affecting the synovial membrane inside the joint. This membrane secretes synovial fluid, which helps to keep the joint moving smoothly. RA is characterised by periods of remission and exacerbation. The most commonly affected joints are those of the hands and feet, but in severe cases, most joints may be affected. Other body systems and organs may also be affected and flare-ups can be accompanied by general malaise. This problem is usually best treated by a qualified herbalist in conjunction with orthodox healthcare. These conditions are best treated by a qualified Herbalist

11.01.2022 Immunity & Inflammation Now is the best time to look after your Health. Addressing your bodies immune system is a great way to start, by reducinginflammation. When inflammation is an acute symptom, ie, after injury, its part of the bodys positive response to aid the healing process. An inflammatory messenger causes increased blood flow to an area and attracts white blood cells to fight off infectious diseases and invaders. Inflammation can become an issue however, when it...Continue reading

09.01.2022 INSOMNIA / POOR SLEEP Christmas is nearly here & some of you may be feeling a little stressed & not sleeping so well. Our quality of sleep is subject to a number of different factors; our lifestyle, environment, & stress levels. Sleep is a habitual activity, which means that if your sleep pattern gets changed for a few nights because of a change in your daily activity, it may carry on for weeks, add in extra stress & it may continue long term. A healthy sleep is essential for... your health and well-being and any disturbance like not falling asleep for hours on end or waking up throughout the night will eventually wear you down. Lets face it sleep is very important. It makes the next day a lot easier, no sleep usually leads to less than ideal days. It is no fun waking up feeling like you have been hit by the proverbial bus. How does Herbal Medicine help? Just as the body can easily get out of sync & enter an unhealthy pattern for sleep, it is usually quite easy to reverse back into a healthy sleep & wake routine. It is therefore not difficult for the herbs to work their healing, & generally only need to be taken for a short while, just long enough to remind both your mind & body about sleep. Herbal medicine for insomnia is both relaxing and a sedative. The herbs help to calm your mind & relax your body before going to bed. These herbs do not knock you out like a sleeping tablet does. It simply relaxes you enough so that you will have a deeper sleep and it also prevents you from waking up in the night for no good reason. You will still wake up if you hear a noise or if you need to get up. Why use Herbal Medicine? Unlike orthodox sleeping medication, herbs used to restore sleep are non-addictive, free of side-effects, will not make you feel sleepy or groggy in the morning and usually you will only need to take them for a short while in order to restore your sleep pattern. 08.01.2022 A Little bit of help for Osteoarthritis There are many tips & tricks around for Arthritis some good some not so good. A couple of ideas that may help you. There... are many foods that play an important part in the support of joint health and in helping to deal with inflammation: some of these are pomegranate, green tea, as well as the ever popular Turmeric. Including many of the concepts of the Mediterranean diet could be of great benefit. Professionally blended Herbal medicines are also fantastic in helping to deal with all that comes with Arthritis. An elimination diet may also be beneficial as it may help to identify any trigger foods that could be aggravating your condition. There are some randomised control trials that have shown positive responses to gluten exclusion from the diet in patients with osteoarthritis and polyarthritis (is arthritis in 5 or more joints at the same time). 1. Exercise regularly, try one hour 3 times per week. Yoga and swimming have been shown to improve the health of articulation joints. 2. Try and stay at your optimal weight. If overweight, ask your Health practitioner for a safe approach to weight loss management. 3. Include meditation or mindfulness to your relaxation time. 4. Eliminate gluten from your diet, (Gluten is a protein contained in some grains, such as wheat, oats, rye and barley). 5. If you are not allergic to it try adding shellfish to your diet. Shellfish have been shown to contain high levels of glucosamine sulphate. 6. Replace coffee and tea with green tea (.Green tea is about 30 percent polyphenols by weight, polyphenols have effects like reducing inflammation green tea also contains large amounts of a catechin called EGCG. Catechins are natural antioxidants that help prevent cell damage and provide other benefits). 7. Add ginger and turmeric to your vegetable casserole or soup. 8. Add cruciferous plants (cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli) rich in sulphur-containing phytochemicals to your diet. 9. If you are female try adding food containing phytoestrogens to your diet: rye, sesame seeds, pistachios, almonds, chick peas lentils. Miso in your soup, tempeh in your salad, linseed and linseed oil in your vinaigrette. (OA is most commonly seen in postmenopausal women,) 10. Add a glass of red wine (containing resveratrol) to your dinner. Try my Restore Tissane it is fantastic in helping Arthritis sufferers. How do I know? I have been using it for quite some time.
