25.01.2022 Behind the scenes! Here's Dr Ruby having a snuggle with baby piggie who was recently in for a routine check-up. Rest assured, every single bunny and piggie gets a snuggle, face smoosh, chin rub or ear rub during their visit with us!

24.01.2022 It's official! the Easter bunny is an essential worker..... and so are the Rabbit Drs! Thank you all so much for your kind emails, lovely cards, presents and yummy eggs to keep us going ! We are now open every day of the year, including ALL the Easter public holidays, for all your essential veterinary care needs. Our emergency and ICU departments are still open 24/7 . We also have a "contact free" home delivery service for your medications and food / hay needs. Just call us on 94176417 or email [email protected]. Easter is going to be different for us all this year, and pretty tough for some... keep in (distant!) contact with your family, neighbours and bun friends and remember - STAY INDOORS AND WASH YOUR PAWS! Best wishes and happy easter from the Rabbit Dr team.

23.01.2022 Hi from the Rabbit Drs! a reminder - rabbits cannot get corona from you....... but virus droplets from infected people can land on surfaces and still be potentially infective. That is why we have decided for the moment not to recycle / exchange old hay bags for new at the clinic - so please keep your old hay bags at home for the time being! We have always been vicious about our hygiene practices, as sadly type 2 calici is still very common in Melbourne rabbits and like COVID-...19, we have no vaccine yet in Australia. That's why at the Rabbit Drs @ CARE even stricter protocols are being currently rolled in to keep us open, yet reduce the potential risk of disease transmission of corona to other people. We have decided after weighing the pro's and cons it is still safe to do housecalls - but only for well rabbits and well humans! Please ring the clinic on 94176417 to arrange an appointment - there may be a bit of delay in us getting to you, but we will do our best. When you come to the clinic you will also notice other changes - you may be asked to stay in your car until called in to the clinic by staff, to stay a set distance away from others at all times and some of our consultations may be by phone or via video link (more on these changes later). All payments will now be by card or bank transfer - no cash please! It will all feel a bit weird at first but your health, and your buns welfare is our prime aim!

23.01.2022 Hi Rabbit people! Something clinical for a change... Meet Ernie! A couple of months ago Ernies' mum noticed a swelling on his back - Dr Ruby had a look and got a little sample of pus from it via a needle (called a fine needle aspirate). The lump was in a very strange place so we decided to do a CT scan - and guess what we found! He has an abscess originating from his kidney that reached along the entire length of his body (see 2 of the attached CT images). It was too big for antibiotics alone to get under control, so we decided to drain the abscess surgically - we removed over 120mls of pus - and little Ernie only weighs 1.2kg, so thats over 10% of his body weight! He is now on long courses of antibiotics, and a few months later is still doing very well. A true team effort from all of the Rabbit Drs.

23.01.2022 Everyone is talking about coronavirus! At the Rabbit Doctors we are aiming for service as normal as long as is sensible. We have always been very strict with hygiene because of the ongoing calici type 2 outbreak so are well prepared for this. However you may notice a few extra changes in the clinic - please use the hand sanitiser provided, try to minimise the number of people that come in with your bunny (ideally one person only) and try and keep a social distance of 1.5m a...part whilst in the clinic. We will always stay our chatty, friendly selves, but there will be NO hugs from Dr Gerry, or the other staff members, and no smooshies for humans from Dr Nicole (buns can still have them!). here are other some things bunny owners should know... 1. you can't catch or give corona virus to your bun! 2. bunnies can live quite happily on hay and good quality pellets for a few weeks if you can't get your normal supplies of veggies - think of growing herb seeds in pots now as a longer term supply. 3. if you are unwell , please reschedule your housecall or clinic appointment (or get someone who is well to bring them in). 4. look out for your friends / neighbours with and without bun kids - do they need anything? Its going to be a tough few months for us all, but we can all help each other stay as healthy as possible. You can use this page to stay in touch with your bunny mates around the world and ask for / give help where needed. Remember there are positive sides to self isolation - you get to stay at home and spend more time with your buns. STAY WELL, PROTECT YOURSELVES, BE KIND TO OTHERS, FLATTEN THE CURVE LOTS OF LOVE FROM THE RABBIT DR TEAM

21.01.2022 Video 2.... entering the clinic Only one person will be allowed to enter with the patient

20.01.2022 Gut stasis ! It's something that most rabbit owners have heard of, but do we really know what it is? Gut stasis is a clinical / symptom phenomenon of 1. eating less or eating nothing at all 2. pooing less or no poos at all and 3. absent or reduced gut sounds on clinical exam - all three features together = gut stasis. It's not a disease - it's what rabbits do when they are sore, stressed, change diet too quickly, or have an underlying illness (like a dental, ear or urinary tr...act issue), any problem at all really! If it's not treated appropriately rabbits can die , and quickly - even 12 hours with no food at all can be fatal in some rabbits. The Rabbit Drs are experts in examining and treating stasis - seeing over 700 cases in the last year alone! We will always see your bunny as an emergency if they need it. In some cases the underlying cause is unusual..... meet Babe! Babe came to us in a state of gut stasis - very sad and sore! Dr. Ruby examined him and found a piece of plastic fibre in his mouth! after careful removal, and some pain relief, Babe was instantly happier - and started eating straight away! If your bunny is not eating there can be so many different reasons, it is important to get your rabbit savvy vet involved at the start. Well done Dr Ruby and Babe's owners for brining him in (and Babe for recovering so quickly!).

20.01.2022 How to perform a nail trim In this video, we will show you how to perform a nail trim at home. To make it easier, one person can hold the bunny while the other concentrates on trimming the nails. https://www.therabbitdoctors.com.au/perform-a-nail-trim

19.01.2022 UPDATE : due to spike in corona cases in Melbourne , our housecall service is sadly suspended until mid August at the moment Housecalls are back! With easing of restrictions in Victoria, the Rabbit Drs can now go back on the road. From June 1st there will be housecalls available - dates and times will depend on where you live. Housecalls are for routine services only - vaccinations, old bun checks etc... not for emergencies - these need to be seen in the clinic as usual, whe...re we are still open 7 days a week. Our vets will adhere to strict social distancing, hand washing and general cleanliness, and housecalls will not be available if any household member is showing signs of cold / respiratory problems or is in mandatory quarantine. To make a booking email or call the clinic on 94176417 well done for staying indoors, and washing your paws! See more

16.01.2022 How to wrap a bunny buritto Some bunnies aren't very compliant when it comes to giving oral medications or syringe feeding. 13.01.2022 ****IMPORTANT INFO******* The Premier has ordered a shutdown of all non essential services in Victoria from this Tuesday. We do not have enough information to know exactly what that means to the Rabbit Drs, but we expect (and have been planning for) a reduction of services at some point - namely, the temporary closure of our housecall service and seeing only emergency / unwell cases at the clinic from Tuesday. We applaud this action and think it will save lives, even though i...t will be very hard on the rabbits of Australia (and their vets). Please bear with us during this difficult time. We are staying open late tomorrow to try and see everyone who needs to be seen before the lockdown. If you need an appointment tomorrow our clinic phone will be open from earlier then normal from 8:30am or you can text directly on 0422 949176 (the old rabbit dr phone number). Strict social isolation protocols are in place at the clinic- please follow the signs and what the staff ask you do. If your rabbit is not quite due their vac or recheck they may well be ok to leave a little longer, until the worst is over. We will also be implementing video consultations for our existing clients in the coming days / weeks - more details to follow. Please all stay well, practise social isolation - be as careful about yourselves as you are with reducing the risk of your rabbits to calici type 2..... its a similar situation. We are going to have lots of updates on this page from here onwards (and also some fun stuff and cases, to keep everyone in lockdown entertained). With love and "virtual" hugs - the rabbit drs.

12.01.2022 Do you want an appointment for your bunny, but can't get to our clinic for any reason? We can help! Early saturday morning Dr Gerry facetimed her 5 brothers and sisters, her dad and her niece Heather (remember when she worked for the Rabbit drs 3 yrs ago?) all in lockdown in the UK at the same time - see the picture! it was a great way to keep in touch - Heather even brought Clementine her REW along! Video conferencing has come an awful long way in a few years - and now it is... possible to do some of our rabbit consults and revisits by video! This service is for existing clients only (Vet board rules) and is suitable for rechecks , behavioural issues, the "not quite sure if i should be worried" and the "should I come in?" appointments. Simply call the clinic on 94176417 and ask for a telemedicine appointment. You'll be given a specific time for the vet to call and we will email you with a link to Zoom or FaceTime. Once your consultation is over any medicine or test kits you need will be express posted to you , and you will get an email which outlines your medications and the plan. See more

12.01.2022 Myxomatosis alert ! Weve sadly heard of cases in the last week all over Melbourne - western suburbs / laverton/ footscray, diamond creek, and in the city. There is no vaccine for Myxo in Australia , and no cure . It is transmitted either by direct ( nose to nose) contact with infected rabbits, or by mosquito bites. It causes fever and swelling of the eyes, ears and genitalia. The best defense is to keep your rabbits completely indoors, especially at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active. If you cant keep them indoors then use mosquito netting. Stay safe everyone!

12.01.2022 With the easing of restrictions the 2 rabbit dr teams have now joined up again ! This means our working hours are altered back to our previous times - we are now open Monday - Friday 8-7pm and Saturday 10-5. The Care emergency dept is still open 24/7 , every day of the year.

10.01.2022 So, for those of us in Melbourne -stage 4 lockdown is fully upon us.... The Rabbit Drs are split into 2 teams again - half week on / half week off .... this means while Dr Lizzie and half the team are busy at the clinic doing the work of the whole team, Dr Gerry and her half team are at home until Monday. It doesn't mean we stop working - we are still looking at blood and urine test results and CT scans (when the software works!), we can provide you with an at home telemedic...ine appointment, or you can ask for repeat medications to be posted to you. What are our bunnies doing in lockdown? Well, Dr Gerry's kids have been very busy - Apricot has taken up "gardening", as you can see.... Nine is busy in the office from home, "working" on a tricky celery based project, whilst Jeremy is doing his 1 hour a day outside "exercise" . Lolly is hiding in her tunnel as she has decided lockdown means a lie-in for her. How many of us, and our buns are doing something similar? Let us know! Stay indoors and wash your paws (and nose, in Apricots' case!). Love from the Rabbit Dr team. See more

10.01.2022 The Rabbit Doctors are now on Instagram! Check us out!

10.01.2022 Whats the news? Theyve even heard all the way in England ( thats Clementine from the UK shouting about it! ).....The Rabbit Drs have increased their opening hours on Saturdays- now open all day from 10am and with more housecall appointments available than ever, to all of Melbourne.... theres no reason your bunny cant get a check up from the World famous Rabbit Drs

09.01.2022 Hope everyone in our bunny community is doing ok- we know lots of people are worried about getting the right medical care, medicines and even hay for their bunnies in these difficult times. To help with this the Rabbit Drs are launching their own support package for you all! 1. There will be Rabbit Drs at CARE 7 days a week, starting from now - mon-friday 8am-8pm, saturdays and sundays 10-5pm (weekend surcharge applies) 2. We are also offering a home delivery service of medicines, hay, food and rabbit treats - items will be dropped at your doorstep (no contact) -small delivery charge applies 4. STAY SAFE! STAY INDOORS AND WASH YOUR PAWS See more

08.01.2022 Meet Dr Supanee! Dr Supanee is the most recent addition to our veterinarian team, she comes to us from a background in shelter medicine and has always had a love for bunnies and the exotic pet. Dr Supanee is pictured with her beloved nethies, Totobun, Sushibun, Teddybun and Littlebun.

07.01.2022 Behind the scenes! COVID has completely changed how us, the team, at the Rabbit Doctors normally interact with you and your bun. Pictured here is Dr Lizzie with little Dixie. Dr Lizzie has just finished a full physical examination of Dixie and is about to call and speak with Dixies owner. Its now pretty normal for staff to be wandering around with fashionable (and very protective) face masks, ear savers and noise cancelling head phones. We know it has been really... hard adapting to the whole concept of not being present while your pet is being examined, but we want to thank you all for doing such an awesome job at helping us with all these changes. Heres some top tips for when youre coming in for an appointment Write down any questions. Bring a phone charger. Bring a piece of entertainment such as a book or download a podcast. If your pet is currently taking medication, double check BEFORE you leave home if you may be running low, this way we can get this sorted during your appointment and save an unnecessary trip! Have you got any other top tips that have made your vet visit easier that you can share? Comment below! #rabbitdrs #staysafe #stayindoorswashyourpaws

07.01.2022 The Rabbit Doctors now have their own direct phone line Our calls will be directed to CARE outside of our business hours to ensure you have access to 24 hour veterinary help. CARE 24 hour emergency care (03) 9417 6417 See more

06.01.2022 Thank you ! Thank you! The Rabbit Drs were voted in the top five vets in Melbourne! Not bad for a tiny clinic that only sees bunnies and other small exotics. Thank you to all of you who voted for us - its lovely to be appreciated.

05.01.2022 Many bunny owners know that itchy painful flakes inside the ear are due to ear mites - but have you ever wondered what they look like? Ear mites appear when a rabbit is stressed or sick for a number of reasons, and whilst they are easy to treat, if your bunny is showing signs of a problem, they should be checked by a bunny savvy vet to work out the underlying cause.

05.01.2022 Alaska says hi! Stay safe, stay indoors and wash your paws

04.01.2022 Exciting news! Bun Fluff grooming now available at the Rabbit Doctors! Now that restrictions are easing a little - are your pets planning to visit their friends and relations? Has indoor quarantine meant they've become a little shaggy as they've been "in their pyjamas" for the last 10 weeks? Kristel, who runs BunFluff, provides the most professional , distinct and gorgeous bun and pig clips the Rabbit Drs have ever seen - when we see her clients in here we say "you know when you've been Bun Fluffed!" Does your bunny or piggy need a groom and / or nail trim? Long hair, short hair, buns with medical conditions requiring special clips, she can do them all. Kristel is available every other Friday afternoon at the Rabbit Drs from May 15th (appointment required). Just call 9417 6417 to make a booking.

04.01.2022 Don't panic - There is plenty of hay available in Victoria. More than enough for all bunnies. However, some people want to stock up in case they are having to self isolate and we understand this. A bag of our hay should last one bunny 4-6 weeks depending on their size. We can only store so many bales of hay at CARE every week, so keep to things fair, and so it doesn't turn into "toiletrollgate", until further notice clients can pick up a maximum of 2 bags of hay per week fro...m the Rabbit Drs. You can also order home deliveries of hay through Pet, horse and farm in Essendon (share a bale with your friends!). In these tough times, please look out for your fellow bunny lovers - make sure the humans and the bunnies have what they need (but not inappropriate quantities). Looking for a way to grow cheap veggies? Did you know you can re-grow the green bits of celery (and chicory, carrot tops and other veggies) by putting the stumps in water. These are Dr Gerry's creations - the 2 sprouting ones are 3 weeks on, the less green ones are 5 days. Why not post your hacks / tips for cheap / free greens for your buns? See more

04.01.2022 Hi Everyone - weve made some videos outlining the changes to entering our clinic during the pandemic - this will give you an idea what to expect if you need to come in.... remember wash your paws, and stay indoors!

03.01.2022 The Rabbit Doctors now has an online store You will find all our food products, including hay, available for delivery! Simply go to our website and select Shop from the menu

02.01.2022 Stage 4 update - with the restrictions coming in at midnight tonight, sadly (but necessarily) most businesses in metropolitan Melbourne will close for 6 weeks.... but the Rabbit Drs will stay open. Veterinary care has been deemed an essential service, and so we gladly carry on. People are allowed to travel more than the 5km restriction to access veterinary services, and when you make an appointment with us you will receive a confirmation email with a letter attached regarding... your date and time of appointment, which you can show to authorities, if required. If you are travelling for emergency purposes you can also break curfew - please, if you are questioned, emphasise your pet needs to attend a specialist emergency centre / one with qualified exotic and emergency vets who have specialised expertise, equipment and medications not generally available in local vet clinics. We will also be strengthening our already very strict COVID-19 protocols. Currently (this may well be subject to change again!) clients are only allowed in the building (one client per appointment only please) to drop off and pick up your pets. Please ring the clinic when you arrive, and wait outside until we let you know you are safe to bring your pet in to us. You will drop your little one off upstairs in one of our carriers, and return outside - the vet will then ring you and do the consultation by phone. We are still offering remote telemedicine appointments (for existing clients only) if you cannot come in. When everything is completed, we will call you and arrange for you to pick up your bun and any medications you need. Everything takes a lot longer than usual, and that is stressful for everyone, including our team - please be kind to us! However, we need to be in this together - friends and acquaintances of the Rabbit Drs have sadly passed away from this awful disease in other countries, and we don't want that to happen here. One thing that has NOT changed, however - is our team spirit, and our never-ending effort to give the best quality Rabbit (and piggies / rats now as well!) care available anywhere in the world! Stay indoors and wash your paws! Love from the Rabbit Dr team x See more

02.01.2022 Meet Guinness! A ten year old bun, he'd been having lots of problems with ear infections on and off for a few years. Medications and antibiotics had helped but he still wasn't happy. After a trip to the Rabbit Drs we did a CT scan of his head - both of his ears had nasty infections, and the build up of pressure from the pus inside his ears was very painful. Dr Lizzie performed a complex surgery called a lateral ear canal ablation (LECA) on both of his ears, a few weeks apart.... The last picture is of the healed ear. Mum is delighted with the outcome and reports that Guinness is like a new bunny - he has even started binkying again! Dr Lizzie and the other vets at the rabbits Drs have had special training to do these surgeries, and they are very successful. If your bunny is suffering from chronic ear issues, you can contact us for a referral appointment to see if surgery might be an option for you. Who knows - like Guinness , they may get a whole new lease of life! See more
