25.01.2022 October is mental health awareness month and we couldn’t let it pass by without acknowledging some of the most important people we work with YOU the parents and carers of the children we support. We understand that the journey with your child can sometimes be challenging, but also rewarding, and we want to make sure that you feel supported through every one of those moments. It is also ok to take time to look after YOU!... Empowerment is a big component of our family-centred approach, and we want all involved to have the strength, skills and understanding to lead happy, healthy lives. The Healthy Mothers Healthy Families program can help you do just that. It aims to empower mothers of children with disabilities to learn about and create a healthy lifestyle that fosters their own health and wellbeing, while still building a healthy family life. Check out their website for more info https://buff.ly/3jWv5mc

24.01.2022 It wouldn't be spring without butterflies, and you can encourage your kids to be peaceful like a butterfly with this little pose... Sit on the grass with a tall spine. Bend your legs, place the soles of your feet together, and gently flap your legs like the wings of a butterfly.

23.01.2022 Happy New Year, welcome back to 2021. We can't wait to see you. We are kicking off our school holiday program with our lego group today and yoga tomorrow. We can't wait to resume group work with you. We do ask however, that if you have been in one of the hotspots (check NSW Health website) please notify the clinic, so we can reschedule to another time or Telehealth session if feasible for you. We will continue to be a COVID safe practice so please be aware of the following:... We ask that you notify the clinic if you or your child are feeling unwell. We kindly ask that only one parent come to the reception area to drop your child off. Your child's temperature and yours will still be taken on arrival. We have the COVID sign in app you must please complete before your child enters therapy. We will be providing disposable masks for your use, your Therapist is likely to be wearing a mask as well (This keeps changing, so we will stay abreast of it). Thanks for your understanding!!!!!

22.01.2022 Congratulations to Blake who has just started his first job at McDonald's! "I really enjoy the new challenges I get to face when I’m working and all the new things I’m starting to learn about working life and learning new skills like customer interaction and money handling, and I suppose pay day isn’t a bad perk of the job either " Keep up the great work Blake!

21.01.2022 Have you ever heard your child’s OT talk about a body check chart? Perhaps your child has brought one home but you aren’t really sure what to do with it? Well, I am here to tell you that it is a pretty cool tool (and one of our favourites) that we use to help children build interoceptive awareness and understand what their body is telling them. Basically, a body check chart involves grabbing a large piece of paper, having a child lay on that piece of paper and tracing around... the outside of their entire body. When this is complete, you have an outline of the child’s body that can be used to build body awareness, self awareness and regulation skills through various activities, including: Pointing to different body parts on the chart and having the child wriggle that body part on their actual body Drawing and labelling all their body parts on the chart Pointing to a body part on the chart and asking the child how it feels now Drawing feelings on the chart using different coloured pens / textas for each feeling To find out more about interoception and body awareness, check out our latest blog https://buff.ly/30AiTQn

19.01.2022 As we enjoy the final days of the spring holidays, we thought it might be helpful to share a few of our top tips when it comes to tackling term four and helping your kids build their confidence. Number 1 Make Time for Self-care. We all know that if we (mums and dads) are not feeling our best, it can impact the rest of the household, so make sure you can take time out when you need it and look after YOU. Number 2 Get Organised. Yep, this can often be a case of ‘easi...er said than done’, but with the help of visual schedules, making sure things like summer uniforms are ready, and having a routine (including getting back into a good bedtime routine and thanks daylight savings for making that a little trickier), you and your kids will be better prepared for school days. Number 3 Build Skill Confidence. The holidays are a good time to practice some of the skills your kids may struggle with. These might include handwriting, self-care skills (like dressing / buttons), drawing / colouring and organisational skills. But this practice doesn’t have to be boring. Simple fine-motor and muscle building activities using putty or playdough can be a good start. Did we miss anything? We would love to hear how you prepare your family for back to school time, so drop us a comment below

With so many books available, we thought we would share a few of our favourites that might help your child build an understanding of who they are and the world around them: Gus The Asparagus - Ann-Marie Finn and Kaylene Hobson... If I Squeeze Your Head I’m Sorry - Ryan Vogelzang with Mama Bird Gwen Vogelzang My Magic Breath: Finding Calm Through Mindful Breathing - Nick Ortner The Very Hungry Worry Monsters - Rosie Greening I’m an Aspie Girl: A Book for Young Girls with Autism Spectrum Conditions - Danuta Bulhak-Paterson All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome by Kathy Hoopmann You are Awesome - Matthew Sayed We would love to see pics of your child all dressed up for their Book Week Parade, so please share in the comments below

16.01.2022 Practicing fine motor skills at home can be easy when you are inspired by the beautiful weather and what you have around the house. Our next spring activity idea is Seed Sorting. All you need are some different seeds (different colours and shapes would be good), some jumbo tweezers or tongs (fingers are also ok), and an egg carton or container with different sections to sort the various seeds. Your kids will have fun exploring the different sizes and using their various ha...nd muscles to pick up the seeds and sort them into the different sections. You can then take this activity a little further and make a garden utilising the seeds your child has sorted. We hope you enjoy this activity as much as we do in our therapy sessions.

15.01.2022 Congratulations to the wonderful Avi for being our 2020 employee of the year! We are very thankful to have Avi as a part of our rainbow family

14.01.2022 Wow, what a busy month with spring well and truly here and new life sprouting we can’t help but be inspired to learn and grow. Our team have been busy with online training in the CO-OP approach. Recently, we learnt all about building handwriting skills and handwriting goals into the CO-OP approach which is essentially asking our clients to think of their own goals and reassess how they are going. We just love learning new skills and ideas that will help our families not only reach their goals, but understand what they are working towards and feel accomplished when they get there.

14.01.2022 Mr J is working on establishing hand dominance and getting ready for big school. Look at him go!

09.01.2022 Mr. S enjoying the rock climbing wall

09.01.2022 A very warm welcome to Abbey!!!!! We have been privileged to work alongside Abbey for the past few months and it is clear her passion, fun, energetic and bubbly personality fits our team. And no surprise, the children and families love her! Here is what you need to know about Abbey: "Working in an industry where you can build long-term relationships with families and watch children grow their confidence with every new skill mastered is incredibly rewarding.... With a love for sport, movement, and the outdoors; Abbey brings a high-energy approach to The Rainbow Clinic team. She has worked in the field of paediatrics for many years and has completed a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy degree with Honours. Abbey believes in shaking things up with movement and ensures all therapy sessions involve at least some physical activities that build strength and, of course, adds fun. She loves working with families to not only build and support the development of a child, but to encourage the growth of the parents and carers so they can feel empowered in their role as well.

09.01.2022 Did you know that we are stepping it up this month and have joined the STEPtember campaign in an effort to support children and adults with cerebral palsy? 08.01.2022 Can you guess which animal this pose reminds us of? Yep, it is a frog Come down to a squat with your knees apart and your arms resting between your knees. Touch your hands to the ground. Jump up like a frog and then return to a squat position. And once you have tried out all the poses (plus any of your own), take a moment to lie on the grass, breath and watch the clouds roll over the sky. The perfect way to spend a spring day

08.01.2022 Have you heard of interoception? It is perhaps the lesser known of our eight senses, but it is very important it helps us feel or sense what is happening inside of our body like hunger, thirst, feeling hot or cold, if we have a full bladder and fatigue. It can also help us interpret emotions. But what if your child has trouble interpreting the messages their body is presenting? Many children and adolescents experience differences with interoception. This makes it harder for them to make sense of the information their body is transmitting and to self-regulate. Check out our latest blog to find out how the interoceptive system works and how Occupational Therapists help Autistic children and young adults build body awareness and interoception skills.

07.01.2022 Yay! The Rainbow Clinic has been nominated as finalists in the 2020 Lake Macquarie Business Excellence Awards in four categories: Outstanding Employer of Choice Excellence in Small Business Outstanding Young Employee ... Outstanding Business Leader On the back of such a crazy year, we are truly thankful for this acknowledgment. Without the support of our amazing team and the families we work with, we would not be able to achieve what we consider to be 'excellence' in the delivery of services and support each and every day. Thank you to all those who have supported us, and stay tuned for the winners announcement on Friday 16th October PM .

07.01.2022 If you have a child aged between four and five years old, chances are you have heard the term ‘school readiness’. It can be daunting thinking about all the skills your child might need before they head off to school and the concept of ‘readiness’ can be confusing. So, what makes a child ready for school? This, of course, looks different for every family. Children develop at their own pace, and there isn’t a right or wrong answer when it comes to school readiness. However, you can help your child build 'school skills' and help them feel confident when it comes to their transition into the new environment. Click the link to read our blog on the topic and find out how we can help your children get ready for school.

07.01.2022 Interoception is perhaps the lesser-known eighth sense (yes, we have eight senses). It helps you understand and feel what is going on inside your body. Kids who struggle with the interoceptive sense may have trouble knowing when they feel hungry, full, hot, cold or thirsty. Having trouble with this sense can also make self-regulation a challenge. Stay tuned for our upcoming blog on Interocpetion which will provide a full insight into the eighth sense and how we help kids build their awareness and understanding of what their body is telling them.

04.01.2022 Although we didn't come away with an award last night, we found great value in spending time together as a team and celebrating our already 'win'. We are winning because we get to work with such incredible families and children every day that continue to inspire us, educate us and allow us to have more understanding and compassion. We are already winning because we have created a 'rainbow family' of colleagues who continue to support, love and guide each other to be better humans. We are already winning because we belong to an inspiring profession, one of 'service' and one of helping others, which ultimately leads to more happiness and purpose in everyday life. Thank you to all those that help make The Rainbow Clinic what it is today
