25.01.2022 Our students are very excited about their school shop today! They have a variety of produce to sell, including handmade cards, upcycled & handmade Boomerang Bags, screen printed T-Shirts & hats, home-grown fruit and handmade soaps. Their shop presents a great opportunity to learn real-life skills. We want to say a big "thank you" to Danielle for donating some beautiful products to add to our shop. Your organic red papaya, soaps and loofah seedlings will be a big hit this afternoon
25.01.2022 Our 10 week Prep Transition Program is nearly coming to an end. Today we had most of our new 2021 preppies visiting again and they had a lovely time creating a gorgeous Christmas wreath At home time they received a story book that will assist them further with their transition to prep. We hope that this book will become a treasured read and will fill them with excitement and anticipation. We would love to thank JCU student Kirstin, who (with the guidance of our principal) lovingly created this book as part of her study to become a teacher

23.01.2022 New Recycling Initiative & Looking for Help Every year millions of our plastic oral care items make their way to landfill. At our school one of our core values is 'Conservation' and we are always looking for ways to reduce, re-use and recycle. We are very happy to be participating in an oral care recycling program. This means we are now collecting your old toothbrushes (also electric toothbrush heads) and your empty tooth paste tubes and floss containers. We will send... them away to be separated by composition, shredded and melted into hard plastic that can be remolded to make new recycled products. We are hoping that the community loves this initiative! To collect as many toothbrushes and tubes as possible we are looking for help. Please get in touch if you (or perhaps your business) would like to become a collection point. Once you have collected a good amount, we will arrange pick up and make sure that it is sent away to be recycled. We are looking forward to hearing from you. Every little bit helps Please note: At this stage the collection box at school in the picture is solely for our students’ collections.
23.01.2022 The Rainforest School ended the term with an excursion to the local Fruit Forest Farm. While being towed by a tractor, we rode in a modified banana trailer, as we toured the fruit farm and adjoining rainforest. Some of our highlights were sampling an array of tropical fruits, looking at artefacts from the past, seeing a water dragon and an antechinus, face painting with Bixa and being treated to homemade Black Sapote Chocolate Mousse and Soursop Smoothies... ... Overall, it was an incredibly fun family day out and the perfect way to end the term!
22.01.2022 Happy World Teacher Day We are very lucky to have an incredibly amazing team of teachers and today they got showered with love by our students and their families. Thank you so much for your passion and dedication to instill a love of learning in our students ... #ThankQldTeachers
21.01.2022 Far North Queensland is home to many beautiful species of butterflies and moths. Today we were lucky to observe the male Hercules moth; the largest moth in the world. The adult moths do not feed and survive purely on its food stores from when it was a caterpillar. These giant moths live for only 10 to 14 days and we all felt a mix of joy and sadness to watch this amazing creature at the end of its life-cycle.
20.01.2022 At The Rainforest School we try to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as we can: Our Kitchen/Garden program is a great example. We use the food we grow for our morning tea and lunch, the scraps go to our worm farm or the chickens. By providing food to our students, we reduce the waste that normally comes with packed lunch boxes. Soft plastic is collected and returned to the RedCycle Bin at Woolworths. ... Plastic bottle lids and bread bag clips are collected for the Lids4Kids Program. Scrap paper is used for artworks or shredded and used in our worm farm or vegetable garden (as is cardboard). We have hosted (and will start again in 2021) Boomerang Bags Sewing Bees, where donated fabric is being transformed into funky bags. More recently we have started collecting oral care products, like toothbrushes and empty toothpaste tubes. We are still looking for more collection points, so please get in touch if you would like to help. #NationalRecyclingWeek #GoBeyondtheBin
20.01.2022 The Rainforest School was pleased to work with two James Cook University students studying their Master of Education. We assisted them as a 'critical friend' to critique and advise them on their project proposal, as they designed and created resources specifically to meet the needs of our school's teaching philosophy. Today we met Kristy as she hand delivered her hand-made and upcycled resources. We thank both students for choosing to partner with The Rainforest School, and for creating 'hands on learning materials for teaching Mathematics' and a 'social story for our Prep transition program'. We are all looking forward to using them

12.01.2022 The highlight of our NAIDOC week celebrations was a visit from Leonard and Nina Andy, who came to share some local Djiru history with our school. It is such a valuable addition to a child's education to learn about local and national indigenous history. Nina explained the significance of NAIDOC and Leonard shared about how he cuts and paints his boomerangs, along with showcasing some of his artwork. Each child selected one of Leonard's original artworks to photocopy, colour ...and take home as a special memory from their day. We are grateful to be living and learning on Djiru country. Thank you Leonard and Nina for your time and teaching.
11.01.2022 Our second stop on our History Tour was Paronella Park. Paronella Park was built in the 1930s by José Paronella, a Spanish immigrant. Inspired by his childhood memories of Catalan castles, Paronella and his workers set to work designing an entertainment area for visitors to enjoy - even to this day!
07.01.2022 To end the year on a high, we went on a history excursion to discover and learn more about the lives of early settlers in Australia. We visited 3 sites to make comparisons between British, Spanish and Chinese settlers and what contributions they have made to our local history. Our first stop was the El Arish Historic Train Station, which houses a collection of documents and artifacts, dating from the Maria Creek Soldier Settlement after World War 1. Thank you Marie Carman fo...r passing on some of your extensive knowledge. We also visited Cenotaph Park for morning tea and to view the Anzac Memorial created by local blacksmith Brent Cook.

02.01.2022 The Rainforest School was excited to have Okka Wikka come to visit at the end of the term! It was a fun afternoon of weaving crowns out of coconut palms and making the world's smallest kites. Some interesting maths rules were applied in creating a working kite and each child was eager to see them in action!
