25.01.2022 I love the impromptu nature of this form of the club, you never know what you are going to get and we got a heck of a variety from tunes and soft ballads, both traditional and contemporary to very loud Scottish pipes (finger in the ears please). You had to be there to appreciate the wonderful music. I think there is a pic of all the participants, if I missed anyone I apologise. It was a lovely night and I had the pleasure of starting of with Eric Bogles No Mans Land in reco...gnition of Sunday being the 100th Year since the armistice of WW1. This prompted a couple of others to follow suit with songs commemorating the end of that conflict and the hope that one day we will have a long lasting peace throughout the world. Next Month is the annual wind up with special guests "The City Slickers" more info will be posted on the WAFF page and calendar (www.wafolk.org.au) See more
24.01.2022 Cant say much more than "brilliant night at the Wanneroo Folk Club". An abundance of talent on display starting with Green Herring and a few of their own songs Colin Smiley gave us a tune followed by a new comer in Sarah Curran, first time at the club and probably not used to an audience that listens to the performers. Excellent guitar work and lovely vocals, come again Sarah. Headline act was Craig Sinclair with the backing violin of Judith (what was the last name again) I...ddison. I havent seen Craig for quite some time and he didnt disappoint, his guitar work is impeccable, those vocals are glorious and the songs tell a story worth listening to. After the raffle was drawn and Jamie almost sprung the footy result (sorry Jamie but a few of us recorded the game to watch later) the second half was opened with Susgala plus 1. The lovely harmonies were enjoyed by all. Craig and Judith returned to finish the night , they have a few more shows over the next few days so I would recommend catching them. Next month we have a double header with the ever popular Gina Williams & Guy Ghouse and the Aussie songs of Loaded Dog. It will be a big night. 23.01.2022 Nice to see a few new faces to our sing-a-round nights. The fans were twirling overhead to keep the air moving and overall it was a night of good songs although the mood was a little affected by the Fires burning around Australia (climate change, what climate change?). I love these nights, we get to see more performers even if the songs numbers are limited to fit everyone in. The photos have all been named and will be appearing on the WAFF web page shortly. www.wafolk.org.au Next Month we have Dan Walsh over from UK. Last year he gave us a great performance on his banjo and next month promises to be as good.
23.01.2022 What an amazing night. 25 or so performers came out to help raise funds for Bush Fire relief and the audience of about 140 filled the Irish Club and were entertained for 3 hours or more of great music and poetry. It was also a good night to honour Bob Rummery who has travelled the country for many years collecting songs, tunes and stories as well as writing some of his own. A late start due to technical problems made a tight schedule a bit tighter but with the great Murray J...ennings and Phil G cajoling the performers on and off the stage with sheep dog tenacity we managed to make up time. Each performer was restricted to 1 or 2 songs and strangely they all managed to do it with grace, humour and talent. Thanks go to the Irish Club for donating the concert space, WA Folk Federation for doing the ticketing and the raffle, The performers who played for free and the folks in the background publicising, setting up, twiddling the sound desk, rearranging microphones etc and of course the wonderful audience (apart from the ladies at the back who wouldnt stop chattering loudly for most of the 2nd half). We havent totalled up the bottom line yet but it looks like it will be over $3,000, cant complain about that. The pics have some extra notes. See more
21.01.2022 This song was written many years ago but is still a favourite. Jill & I recorded this in the back garden this morning, hope you enjoy it during the isolation.
21.01.2022 We had a good crowd at Wanneroo Folk Club (in Warwick) this month. Nice to see people starting to get out to enjoy a bit of music. The night started with Ed Be...ttega with John Ralph in tow for a few songs closely followed by some poetry from Lyndsay Evans and a bit of guitar from Fozzie. The guest artist for tonight was Carmel Charlton singing a few of her own songs from around the country and joined by Colin Smiley. After a brief cuppa and the raffle draw things got a bit jazzy with The Footpath Stompers, consisting of Josh Gray on guitar, Joe Whitehorn on percussion and Aaron Caldwell on saxophone. Josh has moved on from folk and now plays what someone called "Folk Jazz". These guys are great and improving everytime I see them, catch them if you can. Carmel finished the night with Linda Martin performing a few familiar songs which the audience joined in with their usual gusto. Another wonderous mix of music at club this month. Stay tuned to the WA Folk Federation pages on FB and www.wafolk.org.au for next month's show. See more
20.01.2022 Wonderful music at the club this month. Our planned floor spot was taken ill so we had to make do with the guys who organise things. The organising people prefer to stay in the background and showcase the local talent but occasionally they on stage to show their talent when the need arises. Opening up was Jamie McKinnon, he played 3 lovely songs done very well and the audience as usual joined in the choruses. John Ralph followed with a similarly classy act and a bit more cho...rus singing. Next up the main act was Among the pigeons. They gave a spirited performance which was enjoyed by all. They havent lost any of the quality of performance with the new lineup. After the break the new group on the block was Trio Filte, weve these ladies in other formats and this trio certainly didnt disappoint. Jamie commented that whenever we have traditional fiddle the crowd goes off and tonight was no different. Finishing off the night Among the pigeons came back with another set, these guys delighted the audience with a good variety of songs done really well. One of the things about folk clubs is that the audience comes to listen and this brings out the best in the performers who dont have to compete with lots of chatter and babble. Dont miss next month, we have a special guest from Albany with a new CD to promote, Craig Sinclair is a magnificent blues guitarist not to be missed. See you then. See more
19.01.2022 Dedicated to the Folk who fight the bush fires around Australia. The video footage is from the Brisbane hinterlands in Queensland and the Red Tailed Black Cockatoos are from Nannup, Western Australia. The song is from our CD Tread Softly with an intro from a previous recording.
19.01.2022 Cold and wet? Not at Wanneroo last night. A few people missing due to illness bought mild panic to John as he rustled up some replacement performers. John Opened with a song and then introduced Willy Woodbine who dropped in from Pickering Brook and was press ganged into a few songs, I love the lay-back presentation. David Cutler was next up with his usual lovely guitar and voice. Raelene Bruinsma Trio (minus one) was the main act and gave us a bracket of mythical love making... of the Gods and Deities and a variety of other songs accompanied by Alex on guitar and cello. Second half had me doing a few songs, some of mine and a couple of others, thanks for the appreciative applause. Raelene and Alex finished the night with more of the story from the first half. You get good songs and a history lesson at Wanneroo folk club! Next month was/is to be a Sing-a-round, this was the plan last night but stay tuned to www.wafolk.org.au, it may change. See more

18.01.2022 What can one say? Another music fest with variety abounding. The floor spots opened the night with Jerome and Lesley Toonan, nice set of songs and tunes. This w...as followed by a new comer in Tamsin Black, a little nervous but she warmed up, nine voice and is possibly one to watch as she gains confidence. Guest artists were the Red Sea Pedestrians who finished the first half with an array of songs and tunes from around Europe and beyond, mainly in a Klezmer style. Second half saw Grave Spin with Willy and Fred playing covers of well know artists from years gone by, The audience did the usual and joined in with gusto, a good fun bracket, and yes that is a rubbish bin for Bass, a new version of the tea chest bass. Red Sea Pedestrians finished the night with another rowsing set of songs and tunes. A most enjoyable nights entertainment. Next Month will be the Raylene Bruisma duo. Watch the WAFF calendar at the newly refurbished pages: www.wafolk.org.au for more info. See more
18.01.2022 First post COVID Lockdown guest night and an appreciative crowd came to be entertained by some talented performers. Opening the evening was David Beatie with a few tunes from popular songs in classical guitar style. Next up was Mike Tarca who is visiting family and got stranded here due to travel restrictions, a nice set of songs accompanied by his feet percussion and the monster accordion. The bushy Phil Gray was next with some Australiana with a special addition of Bob Rumm...ery for the last song. Last of the 1st half floor spots was The Rambling Bilbies performing Rob's songs that don't come out very often plus a new one. After the break our guest performer for the night was Peter Bugden. Peter is a very funny man and didn't disappoint with his selection of songs and his witty introductions. He also surprised us with a couple of serious songs as well. Overall it was a great night and the audience went home with smiles on their faces. Next month will be Half a Jar. After a 25 year hiatus Half a Jar (Jim McGuire and Phil Roeterdink) will celebrate their re-union at the place where they first emerged - the Wanneroo Folk club. So hopefully we will see you there on September 11th. See more
16.01.2022 Made the trek to Mundaring Folk n Blues last night with Jill playing with Phil Gray, Josh Gray & Peter Harper. Great night of music with David Cutler, Mike Cardy and Martin & Coole with Crystal Jade. MC Steve Ewing was pulling his hair out by the end of the night!
16.01.2022 What a great little festival this is. Little Folk organise this festival and all profits go to Perth Childrens Hospital Foundation (formally PMH). this was our first full weekend and we picked a hot one. Starting with a ceilidh on Friday night with The Rambling Bilbies, The Contra Dance group, Rose & Wattle each calling a few dances and in between we had The Ball Point Penquins, Bernard Carney singing a few songs while the dancers rested. I love this at the start of a festiv...al, a great time to catch up with people we dont see very often. The Music Session that followed went for a while with a wide variety of song, tunes and poetry. To finish of the night the magpies warbled all night long! Saturday had a full programme of workshops and concerts. The highlight for me was Guitar heaven Bernard, Rod, Josh & Marlie show casing their amazing talents on their instrument of choice. The range of experience was wide but the talent on show was brilliant from all four. The whole day was filled with interesting and fun presentations. Sunday we were greeted an 5 am with the loudest Dawn Chorus I have ever heard, Magpies, wrens, honey eaters, wattle birds, kookaburras, chooks, ducks to name just a few all going for it at once! The planned events started with yoga on the lawn a couple of work shops and a concert. Loved the Wayward Earls and the Footpath Stompers. After all of that we packed up and went home, leaving a few intrepid volunteers to tidy up. A great weekend and definitely worth doing again. See more
13.01.2022 A good crowd came out to witness another Dingos Breakfast show. We were expecting 7 but the 6 that were there put on a magnificent show that kept the audience ...on their toes. David Cutler opened with a few songs and from there on it degenerated into a night of humour and good fun. Hot Toddy gave us some good music to open the 2nd half including an excellent Bushfire Suite composed by Iris Jones. Next month we have another international guest, a duo from UK. More info on that soon. See more
13.01.2022 A hot day in the city but the show must go on. Winding up the year had the WAFF committee strutting their stuff, well a few anyway. John and Jamie opened the evening with some rousing singalong songs. They have a new cd in the making and should be available soon. Diana has taken on the secretary role this year but tonight she snag for her supper with a couple of good renditions. The first half finished with the Bluuuuegrass music of the City Slickers featuring Ian Simpson, Wa...yne Perry, Adam Gare and Tim Gillet. Cant say enough about these guys, they are bloody good musicians and very entertaining. Their take on classic rock, folk, country is brilliant and their own tunes are world class. We all had a nice supper provided by the audience as a storm passed over. We then launched into the second half with 2 of the Rambling Bilbies, happy to say the audience seemed to like us! The city Slickers ended the night with another set of magnificent musicianship. And dont forget the folk who welcome us every week, Deb Ralph and Jean McKinnon do a wonderful job of taking your money. Then there are the unnamed folk who set up the room before the audience arrive and are still there when they leave packing up and cleaning up. We would not have a club if it wasnt for the behind the scene work which is quite immense so come a support live music at every opportunity, especially Wanneroo Folk Club! Next month on January 11th 2019 will either be a come all ye or a singaround. the format has yet to be decided but it will be a chance to see a few folk who dont get up to play on the regular nights. 12.01.2022 Over 3 weeks the WAFF led by Bill Cullen presented a series of 3 interactive workshops to help performers to improve their skills on stage. Helping out was John Ralph, Rob Oats and Jim McGuire. We covered stage presentation, PA set up and use, microphone techniques, what to take, how to prepare and a whole heap more. I forgot to take pics of the 1st two workshops so here are a few from workshop 3. Overall the participants felt they had a much better understanding of performance requirements and were in a much better head space to go on stage and strut their stuff. We will try to run a few more of these workshops next year. www.wafolk.org.au Thanks to the Claremont Bowling club and Matilda's music club for helping out with the venue.
09.01.2022 The air was as sharp as a barbers razor but when you walk into the Wanneroo Folk Clubs singaround the atmosphere was warmed with friends and those we havent m...et yet. A smaller than normal crowd but it was a nice evening sharing songs around the room after a break during lockdown. With COVID regulations in place we were rather spaced out but it didnt stop the wonderful songs and tunes. Next month we have guest performer Pete Bugden to brighten us up with his wit and music. See more
09.01.2022 What a show! We may have only had 2 acts but they stunning performers and the almost full house crowd loved it. Gina Williams & Guy Ghouse had the first half, the banter and expressions between the 2 was brilliant. What a class act. Gina singing beautifully with the amazing backing of the cheeky Guy on guitar, what is not to love. The songs were in the Noongar language but with the stories beforehand it all made sense and even had the crowd singing along in language. Moon Riv...er was stunning as well with most of the audience also joining in the English half. 2nd Half was Loaded Dog with the addition of Josh Grey on Double Bass. with song writers in abundance they gave us some wonderful insight into our history and Alans song Winter in Winnipeg somehow fitting in really well. Phil G managed to throw in a couple of jokes to make up for John Ralph being absent due to climbing the hills of Peru (they got a similar response). Next month is set to be another great night so stay tuned to the WAFF web site and Facebook page for more info. See more
08.01.2022 March 2020 saw a concert in aid of Bush Fire relief put on by WA Folk Federation at the Irish Club in Subiaco. This is the 3rd of the videos produced and is the 1st act of the night: Loaded Dog -(Bob Rummery, Phil Roeterdink, Phil Gray, Josh Gray, Alan Mann) performing "Dusty Gravel Road", "Down Under", "Call of the North", "New Metters Wood Stove". The MC was Murray Jennings, stage manager was Phil "blue heeler" Gray, video was by Yvonne Gray, audio was from the sound desk, edited by Rob Oats. Original Song copyrights exist.
08.01.2022 40 degree day again but luckily the sea breeze cooled things down a little, untlll the music started! An almost full house were presented with just 2 acts last night but those 2 acts provided some magnificent entertainment. First up was Jane and the Rain launching their new CD. Jane Cornes sang with her wonderful voice and the Rain behind provided excellent backing. Next up was Dan Walsh from UK on a very busy tour of WA. What he does with the banjo is pretty amazing from Iri...sh traditional to super fast bluegrass and ballads. And then he swapped over to Guitar for a couple of songs and proved he is not just a one instrument man. His rendition of Paul Simons "Just call me Al: was blisteringly good. Great night despite the warmth of the day. But wait because next month we have Hot Toddy doing the Scottish/Celtic and Waralakin Blue & Browngrass. a trio of Phil & Josh Gray and Alan Man. This is going to be another roller coaster of music styles! See more
07.01.2022 Lats night we went the Tommy Emmanuel Concert at the Perth Concert Hall. What an amazing talent. The concert opened with Jerry Douglas on Slide Dobro and he came back at the end with Tommy. Also a surprise appearance by Hank Marvin, now a gypsy jazz player around town. 3 hours of amazing guitar playing. Amazing number of Perth musicians were spotted enjoying the show. My only criticism was the volume, did it really need to be that loud? The concert Hall has great acoustics and acoustic guitars dont need to blast our ears!
07.01.2022 Fresh off the plane we had Paul Walker & Karen Pfeiffer as our guests from the UK, escaping Brexit for a while. Dick Wilkinson as Support act loosened the crowd with his gentle manner of wooing the audience with humour good music and fun, and I stand by my description in the Club notes, we love to hear and see you. Paul and Karen took the stage and gave us songs from around the world, mainly written by them but these prolific writers will get inspired at the drop of a hat. ...Karen played a variety of wind instruments as well as singing with a beautiful clear voice, Paul was not out done with is singing and guitar playing. The audience once again happily joined in, why does this seem to surprise performers so much? Colin Smiley opened the second half with a short glimpse of his up coming show at the Irish Club (see the WAFF Calendar at www.wafolk.org.au for more detail). Karen & Paul finished off the night in style with Karen doing a Piaf song while she traversed the room in Parisian night club style. All in all another wonderful night at Wanneroo Folk Club in Warwick. See more
07.01.2022 Another stinker outside and the fans were running on full but it didnt deter the crowd to party out the last show for the year. As has been the thing for the last few years The WAFF/WFC committee got to strut their stuff. The Rambling Bilbies opened the night with one of my own (Jasmin which went down a treat) an shortened version of Here comes the Sun (Sorry Amanda and Jill I missed the repeat) and finishing with Silent Night partnered with On a Starlit Night and Gina Will...iams & Guy Ghouses translation Bedik-Bedik Kedalak (Silent night in Noongar language) with a choir of audience joining in. Bill Cullen was next up, Bill joined the committee a couple of weeks ago and gave us songs good songs including a Gordon Lightfoot favourite. Jamie McKinnon followed with a few songs including Nadine which had the story extended during the night. David Cutler has a wonderful way with songs and among others gave us John McCutcheons Song about Xmas in the trenches of WW1 .We managed to get a couple og songs from MC John Ralph as well and it was worth the wait. Supper was served with lots of conversation and then the Cork Man Sean Roche took to the stage for the second half. Opening unaccompanied with Hot Asphalt and a grand set of songs form all over. He was joined mid set by Colin Smiley on Harp and finished the night with a couple of encore songs sending the audience Choir home, who had joined in all night, happy and waiting for Januarys Sing-a round on Jan 12th 2020. Have a merry Summer Solstice and watch out for the New Year it is gonna getcha. See more
06.01.2022 A Hot Day but the night cooled down. The music was hot. MC Jorn Ralph introduced Kaylyn Jean, a young singer/songwriter who is certainly on the way to making a name for herself. She has a song on JJJ Unearthed which is getting some attention and her set tonight was full of good songs and she sings them very well, I heard several comments about the quality of her voice, it was very easy to listen to. From there we went to Ashlea Reale and the Outlaws with songs of bushrangers... and murder abounded in a very professional preview of their new CD which will be available soon. Great vocals from Ashlea, great guitar work from Marlie and lovely bass from Paul. 2nd half after a cuppa and the raffle Colin Smiley gave us a couple of tunes on Harmonica and then Ashlea and co finished off the night with more murder and bloodshed and a few other songs to lighten up the mood. It was a great night once again. Next month on Dec 13th is our Xmas special, more info a bit later but expect the odd festive song or 2. See more
04.01.2022 A Come-All-Ye was called for and it went down well with the appreciative crowd. 9 acts, 3 songs each, no PA or Amps, minimal lighting and a few people we dont see very often, bit like folk clubs of old. John Ralph was MC and opening the night Phil Gray was his effervescent self and gave us among, others, a rendition of a Sid DeBurgh song about life on the land, very nice. Next came Mike Tarca with some tunes and songs. A quick re-order saw Nick Hunter take his place on sta...ge with a John Martyn song and 2 half songs. Dick Wilkinson followed in his usual humorous way, love this guy. Colin Smiley gave us a few tunes accompanied by Phil Roeterdink for a couple who then gave us 3 songs on his own. Phil Reeve from Matildas Folk club gave us a few laughs with Sue roped in as a music stand and tamborine player. David Beatie did his classical guitar thing and the night ended with myself playing a few. The general consensus was that this format needs repeating, along with the sing-arounds. Next Month we have Steve Turner (UK). Steve Turner is known as a pioneer of highly sophisticated English concertina song accompaniments, stretching the boundaries of traditional forms, with one of the best voices in the business. He is a multi-instrumentalist, who also accompanies himself on the cittern, and also plays mandolin and banjo. So come along for an special night of good music. See more
04.01.2022 Wanneroo Folk Club Oct 18. Stormy night outside but nice and warm for the music inside. Opening with Ken Kenny and a song and recitation both delivered extreme...ly well and entertaining. I love Kens humour. Alan Reid & Rob Van Sante were the guest artists and they gave us a night to remember. With a back ground fro the battlefield band they played predominantly songs of a Scottish nature but luckily for us from south of the border the dialects were understandable. I thoroughly enjoyed the songs, the banter and the story of the songs. Their professionalism shone through in both sets and the smaller than expected crowd were appreciative of this intimate show. The second half was opened with Graham Wilson and for those who saw him supporting Kieran Halpin you will know how delightful he is as an artist, he didnt disappoint this time either. Alan and Rob finished a wonderful night with another entertaining set. Next month is the return of the Great Wanneroo sing-a round so come prepared with a couple of songs on 9th November. See more
03.01.2022 Friday night at the Folk in the Forest Festival in aid of Little Folk. The Bilbies were joined by Josh Gray and John Ralph for the dances and Phil & Josh were joined by Jill Oats and Colleen Dixon for a couple of songs. We had a ball and hopefully the dancers have recovered after some rusty dance calling. We dont get to call the more complex ones very often so sorry for the slip ups. We only stayed for Friday night and Saturday morning due to other commitments but we thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with some people we havent seen in ages. First time we have been to Banskia Springs and Folk in the Forest and we were impressed with the lovely feel of the festival.
02.01.2022 A depleted crowd probably due to the news reports of the last couple of weeks scaring people away from gatherings. You should have been here to hear the 4 quali...ty acts. Live music is a great way to raise the spirits and boy do we need that at the moment, you just need to take precautions (and I know lots of folk are going to bucket me for that comment, dont bother, Ive heard them all). We opened the night with "Espresso". I thought they were a duo but as the say goes there is more, they added percussion. a very enjoyable bracket of self compositions, nice harmonies and guitar work. Next we had "Hot Toddy" back again with their Scottish and self penned tunes. A nice balance of instruments and commentary, it is nice to know the story behind the tunes. Our MC John Ralph has a new CD out and he gave us a snap shot of it with some lovely songs he has written, good words and guitar. Finally We were trying to Josh Grays band but they were unavailable so Josh roped in his old man Phil (who kept his birthday secret) and the amazing song writer Alan Man. So "Waralakin Blues & Browngrass" hit the stage instead. The joked their way through a wonderful set of songs with gentle jibes at each other to the amusement of all. The explanation of the band name was hilarious. Overall it was a night worth being there for, bit hard to hear it from the isolation of the lounge room. Next month dust off a couple of songs for either a Sing-a-Round or a Come-all-Ye where performers and audience are always welcome and the reduced fee to get in makes it even more attractive. www.wafolk.org.au See more
02.01.2022 A bumper crowd left their air conditioned homes for a steamy night of great music. It is good to so many people from further afield attending the club this month. We started as usual with WAFF member performers from the floor and luckily this month was not left to to the committee to fill the breach. Al Riebau (from the Merriwa club started proceeding with a couple couple of song, and yes that is an autoharp he is playing, a very nice one I might add. Next up were the Purcell...s who gave us a couple of contemporary songs. A surprise addition was Ken Kenny with songs and renditions mostly about death & funerals, strange how we find humour in such things but Ken does like to keep the mood light in a deep sort of way. To finish the 1st half Steve Turner hit the stage with his concertina and mandolin. Steve is a heck of player and his concertina had a wonderful tone. I can see why the reviews are so good. The 2nd half started as a mini CD launch for John & Jamie (Jam Jar) and they presented some songs from their new CD. This is probably the best I have heard them play together. To finish the night Steve returned with more of his well crafted songs and was joined on stage by his wife Liz who sang a few songs and added some lovely harmonies. Next Month we have the return of Dingos Breakfast (is that apostrophe in the right place) and no doubt they will bring a horde of extras to enhance their brilliant renditions. So dont forget the 8th March for another wild night of an unpredictable songfest. See more
01.01.2022 Another successful sing-a-round at the club last night. John and Jamie started with a rousing everybody join in song to get us going then we had Phil & Bob doing a song and a bit of prose/bush poetry. Following on around the circle Colin gave us a tune on the harp, David came next with his classical guitar work. Dick joined the throng with a song about his mum (I doubt it really) and had every one in stitches. Rising to the occasion Ron gave us a bit of traditional fare and ...Green Herring gave us a self penned environment song. Susgala gave us a self penned love song and the Rambling Bilbies presented an Aussie classic. Helen came next with the 2nd Ukulele for the night with a nicely played tune. The Purcells came next. Jamie and John finished the first time around. After a break with a few leaving we did another couple of rounds and all went home to bed. I really must make notes, people ask what tunes and songs were played, cant say for sure. Next month will be back to the more formal set up featuring Among the Pigeons (the cat got away). Ill pass on more info on the WAFF pages (www.wafolk.org.au). See more
