25.01.2022 Mama Naorlia, our beautiful white Unicorn Mother of Mandela and The Ranch’s beautiful Andalusian babies, is back at the beach. Yesterday she took an adorable young girl riding for her 10 Birthday. I walked with her on foot leading Naorlia, she said that she had always wanted to ride a white horse. She was so happy that she couldn’t wipe the smile of her face. While everyone was swimming the horses in the ocean @charliebennettsmith_ snapped these adorable photos of the 2 o...f them at the waters edge! Naorlia was clearly very happy to be back at the beach!! . . . . . . . . #birthday #theranchbyronbay #andalusian #andalusianhorse #purarazaespañola #brunswickheads #byronbay See more

22.01.2022 A while back I helped Kristen Aggers with her horse Dream, and although I don't claim to know much about teaching high-level dressage I was able to use a couple... different Principles of Training to help iron out a few issues with Dream. Kristen's success in applying these principles go to prove that it doesn't matter what discipline you practice, or what type of horse you have, the underlying foundations of all good training are the same. 20.01.2022 A couple of years ago I organised photography workshop in Mongolia. One of the most memorable experiences was living together with nomads in West Mongolia. They... have challenging life conditions with severe weather, endless steppe. We setup a Ger tent near one of Mongolian family to document their life. See more

17.01.2022 Camden Lock Market in London was originally the site of stabling for hundreds of working horses - many of the stables, saddleries, tack rooms, the Pickford Hors...e Hospital and other horse businesses being underground in tunnels. Farriers were always busy there, and had forges set up. Injured horses were brought to the hospital by canal. Busy Regent's Canal meant a lot of working horses were needed to take goods to the railway station. The place also became a thriving market from 1854. It's still a market - known as The Stables and The Horse Tunnel Market. The last horse retired in 1967. To commemorate the horses, two giant horse heads and a big stallion in bronze were installed, as well as 16 life-size horses, in the 1980's. Popular as a wonderful drawcard - but development sadly meant the statues were sold off in 2014 to private collections. Over 100,000 people visit the market every weekend.

13.01.2022 Have a good night from us here in the H'e Sapa. Heart felt hand shake out to all relatives across turtle island and over seas.

11.01.2022 This time last year I was falling off anything up to seven times per training session learning to roman ride at liberty with 4 horses. A year on and I’m as at ...home standing on these 6 as I am rising Malik. No one can tell you what time line your progress will take or the sum total of failures and plateaus you will encounter. The only thing that is certain is that there is only one way to improve. Keep going. Keep trying. Keep training. Keep Dreaming Photography credit to E J Lazenby Photography

08.01.2022 It was so good to ride again with my dear and beloved friend Tezwa from @buffalogirllife yesterday, who snapped this footage. The vibe was feeling pretty chilled so I slipped Mandela’s halter off him and we rode up the beach freely. It’s always a great opportunity when you’re doing beach rides to practice your rope skills and desensitise your horse to items swinging around the place. In any successful relationship trust is key. I trusted him not to take off or try to buck me off and he trusts me not to hit him with the rope... I love this big spunk! Thanks Tez #repost @buffalogirllife Round them up Wednesday! I hope your all having a great day! Our favourite Cowgirl @theranchbyronbay

08.01.2022 A horse with an "old soul" is bringing joy to residents of a retirement home in Motueka. He’s named Tyson after a certain boxer of dubious repute. Which is kind of appropriate after a rough and tumble start in life.

08.01.2022 In 1984 my girlfriend Carol Ann Henry and I embarked on an 85 day Expedition into what would become the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area. That trip was pivotal fo...r me. On the way back we traversed a remote, snow clogged pass on the crest of the Rocky Mountain Divide where we lost a beautiful packhorse and very nearly the rest of the string as well. I tell the story of how we were saved by 6 caribou bulls in my new book, Crossing the Divide. Here are a number of images from that trip, most of which did not make it into the book. You can find all the info for Crossing the Divide at: http://creekstonepress.com//crossing_the_divide_discoverin

07.01.2022 This is an amazing day for us here, and it’s all because of this photo. Taken by Steve Paige for American Wild Horse Campaign @freewildhorses 2 years ago duri...ng the Warm Springs roundup. I saw this photo of a horse jumping the panel to escape the trap, his desire and will to stay free so evident he would risk his life for it. It captured everything about why these wild horses need to stay free. I went to the BLM corrals to search for him to make sure he was OK. I heard he’d been recaptured, as he hadn’t wanted to leave his family. I found him, with his best friend, who had stayed in the trap that day. I searched and also found his lead mare and took photos of all of them. I asked to adopt the whole family, but was denied as the two stallions were to be returned to the wild, which I was so happy about. After that day I never saw his mare again. Over the next year I would go to the corrals and stop to visit, take photos and tell them that they’d be free soon. One day I saw Phoenix standing alone looking forlorn without his constant friend. I found out the Warm Springs release was cancelled and his friend had been adopted. So I asked if Phoenix was available for adoption and he was. The story will continue in the next post but in this one I wanted to give my heartfelt thanks to Steve Paige and all the photographers who document these roundups. They are out there now in wind and bitter freezing cold, desperately trying to take photos of the Wyoming roundup. Carol Walker @wild_hoofbeats is also out there and without these dedicated talented photographers, and many others, we would not be able to reunite families after they are captured. We have been helped by so many of them in finding families and these unsung heroes are such important advocates for our wild horses. As you know we were able to get Phoenix to Skydog where he has been for a year now. We gave him back the freedom he fought for so badly he made the jump seen around the world. But there was one thing more important to him - family - and today we get to give his lead mare back to him and reunite them after two years. More to come later today photo credit Steve Paige @freewildhorses American Wild Horse Campaign #skydogphoenix #mustangfamily #emptythepens #livewildstayfree #passthesafeact #mustangsmatter #stoptheroundups

06.01.2022 LAKOTA CODE OF ETHICS 1. Rise with the sun to pray. Pray alone. Pray often. The Great Spirit will listen, if you only speak. 2. Be tolerant of those who are lost on their path. Ignorance, conceit, anger, jealousy - and greed stem from a lost soul. Pray that they will find guidance.... 3. Search for yourself, by yourself. Do not allow others to make your path for you. It is your road, and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you. 4. Treat the guests in your home with much consideration. Serve them the best food, give them the best bed and treat them with respect and honor. 5. Do not take what is not yours whether from a person, a community, the wilderness or from a culture. It was not earned nor given. It is not yours. 6. Respect all things that are placed upon this earth - whether it be people or plant. 7. Honor other people's thoughts, wishes and words. Never interrupt another or mock or rudely mimic them. Allow each person the right to personal expression. 8. Never speak of others in a bad way. The negative energy that you put out into the universe will multiply when it returns to you. 9. All persons make mistakes. And all mistakes can be forgiven. 10. Bad thoughts cause illness of the mind, body and spirit. Practice optimism. 11. Nature is not FOR us, it is a PART of us. They are part of your worldly family. 12. Children are the seeds of our future. Plant love in their hearts and water them with wisdom and life's lessons. When they are grown, give them space to grow. 13. Avoid hurting the hearts of others. The poison of your pain will return to you. 14. Be truthful at all times. Honesty is the test of ones will within this universe. 15. Keep yourself balanced. Your Mental self, Spiritual self, Emotional self, and Physical self - all need to be strong, pure and healthy. Work out the body to strengthen the mind. Grow rich in spirit to cure emotional ails. 16. Make conscious decisions as to who you will be and how you will react. Be responsible for your own actions. 17. Respect the privacy and personal space of others. Do not touch the personal property of others - especially sacred and religious objects. This is forbidden. 18. Be true to yourself first. You cannot nurture and help others if you cannot nurture and help yourself first. 19. Respect others religious beliefs. Do not force your belief on others. 20. Share your good fortune with others.

05.01.2022 When the relationship with your horse is created with Love, Language, and Leadership... the sky is the limit. Lauren Barwick is now one of our Parelli Professio...nals, but before the Parelli Program, she learned a very traditional style of horsemanship. As you'll see, if Lauren didn't learn the Parelli Program, giving her a solid background in learning to communicate with horses, she may not have ended up at the Olympics with her horses acting as true partners like she dreamed of. www.parelli.com

05.01.2022 One of the reasons the Nez Percé warriors were so effective against the US cavalry was their distinctive horse. Named after the Palouse River, the Appaloosa was... selectively bred by the Nez Percé for speed and endurance. Their beauty was a happy side effect of the breeding program. While the US Army horses were primarily drawn from stock in the East and were ill-fit for the environment, the horses used by Native Americans in the West largely came from the Spanish horses brought into Mexico with partial lineages going back to Arabia. In the mid-17th century large Spanish herds were used around Santa Fe and Taos. The Spaniards attempted to keep the horses from the Native Americans, but escaped Indian slaves and stollen horses resulted in Apache and Navajo acquiring horses rapidly and putting their new equestrian skills to masterful use. The 1680 Pueblo Revolt resulted in thousands of horses being left behind by the fleeing Spaniards. As Spain continued to lose control over Northern Mexico even more horses found their way into Native herds. By 1700 the Shoshone tribes of the Great Basin had acquired horses from their southern cousins. Around 1730 the Nez Percé also had horses giving the Shoshone and Nez Percé a strategic military and hunting advantage over the plains tribes (the Crow and Blackfeet did not have the horse until c. 1740 and the Sioux not until c. 1770). The Spanish stock were ideal for the harsh environment of the Western United States and the Nez Percé recognized early on the benefits of selectively breeding the best horses for their particular environment and needs. In the mid-19th century, the US Army often found their cavalry horses unable to compete with the horses of the Western tribes. While the Army horses had been raised on grain, were used to abundant water, and often bred from racing stock, the Native horses were grass fed and had far better endurance. Army officers often complained that their horses were not up to the task of chasing down the steeds of the Native Americans. In many cases the Army, knowing the advantage the horses gave the Indians, destroyed horse herds to remove the military power of the tribes and lock them into areas that could only be travelled by foot. So, after the Nez Percé War, the US Army tried to destroy the Appaloosa breed through slaughter and breeding with draft horses. However, Chief White Bird had slipped across the Canadian border with women, children, and their prized spotted horses. In Canada, he and his refugees kept the breed alive. Today the Appaloosa is a lasting testament to the equestrian mastery of the Nez Percé tribe. Standing over 14 hands high with strong legs and noted intelligence, the Appaloosa is still an ideal horse for the Idaho mountains. Their beautiful spotted coat, striped hooves, and almost human eyes are as striking as the Palouse River country from which they arose. It is only fitting that the Appaloosa is recognized as the Idaho state horse. Note: there is a difference between the modern Appaloosa and the modern Nez Percé horses! The Nez Percé horse is a beautiful and unique breed, and a different horse from the Appaloosa.

05.01.2022 Unbelievable! How devastating. My heart goes out to all who have been affected by this tragedy, both horse and human.

02.01.2022 Near-death adventure, exploration, and a deep look into our relationship with the natural world can be found in my new book, Crossing the Divide, Discovering a ...Wilderness Ethic in Canada's Northern Rockies, which has recently hit the streets. Published ably by Creekstone Press, http://creekstonepress.com//crossing_the_divide_discoverin this memoir includes many hair raising adventures, including being caught in the lights of a freight train high on a bridge above the Fraser River, escaping death while falling giant fir trees near Terrace BC, hunting bears and moose, helping to create the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area, and, perhaps scariest of all, shooting up my father's cabbages down on the family homestead on the Pine River! In the next few weeks I am going to be posting some behind the scenes material that doesn't show up in the book, but that adds to the story of adventure, of danger, of accomplishment, but also about humility, passion, and the birth of an ethic of respect for the land, the animals, and the people that call this magnificent chunk of wilderness home. To start, here are a few pics circa 1983, some of our first trips into the Brazion and Mountain Creek country south of Mount Lemoray in the Pine Pass. This area has some of the highest densities of grizzly bear in BC- now that's saying something! In the 1980's this area was being heavily logged, mined, and explored for oil and gas, and much high quality wilderness was being lost. See below for before and after pics of the Brazion valley. Although at the time our family was operating a logging show in the valley, and I was driving skidder, the thought of the beauty and habitat being lost drove many of us to fight for the area during the Dawson Creek Land Resource Management Planning process (LRMP) and today much of the area enjoys protection as the Pine Le Moray Provincial Park as a result. You can read a bit about the Brazion Valley, in the chapter entitled "Time to Think." Enjoy!
