24.01.2022 As the months go on, you may notice that tummy time and moving against gravity is getting easier for your baby! . Check out this progression of tummy time. ...As your baby gets stronger, he's able to stay and play in that position for longer periods because of improved strength, stability, and coordination between the left and right sides of his body. . It's truly a workout and it builds the foundation for future gross and fine motor milestones! See more

16.01.2022 Jelly Beans Wishes all our special mothers and fathers a Merry Christmas! The Special Mother by Erma Bombeck Did you ever wonder how mothers of disabled children were chosen? Somehow I visualize God hovering over the earth selecting his instruments of propagation with great care and deliberation. ... As He observes, He instructs His angels to make notes in a giant ledger. "This one gets a daughter. The Patron saint will be Cecelia" "This one gets twins. The Patron saint will be Matthew" "This one gets a son. The Patron saint.....give her Gerard. He's used to profanity" Finally He passes a name to an angel and smiles. "Give her a disabled child". The angel is curious. "Why this one God? She's so happy" "Exactly," smiles God. "Could I give a disabled child to a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel!" "But has she patience?" asks the angel. "I don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of sorrow and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she'll handle it. I watched her today, she has that feeling of self and independence that is so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I'm going to give her has his own world. She has to make him live in her world and that's not going to be easy." "But Lord, I don't think she even believes in you" God smiles, "No matter, I can fix that. This one is perfect - she has just enough selfishness" The angel gasps - "Selfishness? is that a virtue?" God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally she won't survive. Yes here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a 'spoken word'. She will never consider any 'step' ordinary. When her child says "Momma" for the first time she will be present at a miracle and will know it. I will permit her to see clearly the things I see...ignorance, cruelty and prejudice...and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing my work as surely as if she is here by my side" "And what about her Patron saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in mid air. God smiles "A mirror will suffice" - Erma Bombeck

07.01.2022 Getting off the bottle, transitioning to cup drinking or straw drinking should begin at 6 months. It only took a week! When the family works so hard on the skills suggested, PROGRESS!!!

06.01.2022 Worried about your kid going off to school or daycare? Wondering which cup keeps the straw & drinking surface clean & frankly, less exposed? . Choose a pop-...top, easy-open lid that exposes a short, flexible, firm straw & is also easy to shut for any age child. . I personally love all these cups, but what they all have in common is that the drinking surface is not exposed to the open air unless your child is taking a sip. Then down comes the lid and that’s that! . Note: Although I am not a fan of valves in straws (see earlier posts) the Cool Cat has a tiny valve part-way down the straw. It’s minimal & not enough to make a child have to suck too hard or bite the straw so I’m fine with it! Bonus that cup can be personalized. . If your child is in virtual school, any of these cups will help to protect her work surface, her computer & encourage her to drink water throughout the school day. . According to UCDavis.edu: When the brain is fully hydrated, the exchange of nutrients & toxins will be more efficientthus ensuring better concentration & mental alertness. Water it’s a good thing! #melaniepotock #covid19 #virtuallearning #school2020 #backtoschool #bestcupsforkids #mylittleeater #feedinglittles #preschool #daycare #momtips #momlife #drinkwater

05.01.2022 Imitation is an important skill; however, sometimes it reminds the adults to be mindful. Apparently, I sigh a lot in the afternoon...

05.01.2022 If your kid wouldn’t be secure in a roll over, they aren’t secure enough. I stress car seat safety because it’s SO important and it’s done improperly SO often.... Being in a car is the most dangerous thing your child will do in a day, wouldn’t you do anything to ensure they’re as safe as they can possibly be? Why so many people brush it off as no big deal, I’ll never understand. Today someone reached out to me about what car seat to use/how to use them and it made me so happy. And I think it’s admirable anytime someone does. Why I share information so often, I want to be a resource. And if I don’t know, I’ll do my best to find out or ask someone who does. Because it doesn’t matter if it’s your kid, your friends kid, your nephew, or your uncles step kid, if you’re transporting a child in your vehicle you need to know how to use their car seat correctly. Some things to keep in mind * Keep your child rear facing as long as their car seat allows. Turning forward facing isn’t a milestone at a certain age. If they are still within height/weight limits, they should continue to be rear facing. Kids are nimble, they won’t be uncomfortable. Rear facing is not a choice to be made based on parenting style or opinion; it’s one based on scientific fact. The more we know about physics and physiology, the better we’re able to protect our kids from severe injury as a result of a crash. * Make sure your child is in the *right* car seat for their size. That means being in a 5 point harness until they max out those limits. A seat belt or riding without a booster is also not a milestone to be done at any particular age. * If you’re using an infant seat with a newborn insert, check your manual to see what weight that it needs to be removed. (Ex with the chicco keyfit 30 you have to remove the insert if the child exceeds 11lbs) * No puffy coats in the winter. You can warm up your car before you get in it, put their coat on until you reach the car, and put their coat on backwards once they’re strapped in. * While RF, straps should come from at or below the shoulders and the chest clip should be at underarm level. * While FF, straps should come from at or above the shoulders and the chest clip should be at underarm level. When FF you must also use the top tether. * No aftermarket products should be used with your car seat at anytime. * Even if your car seat came with strap covers, do not use them if they interfere with proper chest clip placement. * Anchors have weight limits, make sure when your child meets that limit that you switch to a seat belt install. Additionally, do not use both the latch and seat belt at the same time. https://www.howtosafety.com///latch-or-seat-belt-not-both/ * Straps need to be tight. Yes, even on the baby you’re bringing home from the hospital. To be sure they’re tight enough do the pinch test or reverse pinch test. *If you’re in any sort of accident, your car seat needs to be replaced. (Your car seat manual will specify this.) Even if it doesn’t appear to be damaged, it may have compromised the integrity of the seat, making it not able to withstand a 2nd crash. A risk not worth taking. Your insurance should cover the new seat(s). If you want a more expensive seat, they’ll give you what the seat in the crash was worth, and you’ll pay the remainder or if it’s the same seat or one that it is cheaper, they’ll cover it in it’s entirety. Also before you set the seat out for the trash, make sure you ruin it. Cut straps, spray paint, etc so no one else picks it up thinking it is safe to use. * Car seats have expiration dates! * If you want someone to check your install, you need to schedule an appointment with a CPST(Child Passenger Safety Technician), not a firefighter/police officer (unless they are certified.) Here’s a good article to read if you’re curious about why staying RF is so crucial. Also if you flipped your child too soon, there’s nothing saying you can’t flip them back! https://csftl.org/why-rear-facing-the-science-junkies-guide/ #KnowBetterDoBetter #KeepAllTheBabesSafe #CarSeatSafetyAdvocate ETA I’m not saying everyone go out and flip their kid upside down. Do I think it damaged his seat as someone insinuated? Not at all. The point of this photo is that he’s in his seat correctly, which means he’s safe no matter if he’s right side up, upside down, or sideways. I see so many people driving their kids around with loose or twisted straps, a chest clip at their belly button, installed incorrectly, wearing coats, I could go on and on. If those kids were in an accident they would by no means be secure. And your child should always be secure enough that if you were in a rollover, that they’d be safe. And if you see something you don’t like? Keep scrolling

02.01.2022 Please oh please stop encouraging parents to WAIT when their child is not meeting milestones. Early intervention is so important for many kids- and many are mis...sing out and/or starting much later than is ideal. Let’s start when the delay is small rather than waiting until they have significant delays that are more difficult to overcome! See more
