25.01.2022 Therapy Matters is relieved that today is the final day of checkpoints at the Queensland-NSW border. This marks a huge turning point in our country’s success in managing the Covid pandemic but it also marks such a significant change and relief to the everyday lives of our staff and clients who cross the border often multiple times every day. After being in place for almost nine months, today is the final day of police checkpoints along the Queensland-NSW border.... From tomorrow the checkpoints and road blocks will be dismantled. It means, for the first time since March 2020, drivers will not be required to display a border pass when travelling between NSW and Queensland. We welcome this change for our community and are so thankful that the reason for this change is Australia’s positive response to this unexpected pandemic.

20.01.2022 AUSKidTalk, a project that records Australian children talking, aims to close the gap in speech recognition systems that have until now performed badly in understanding young users of technology. Up until now, speech recognition software that powers virtual assistants like Google Assistant, Alexa and Siri has relied on a growing database of adult voices. Dr Beena Ahmed, a senior lecturer with UNSW’s School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications, is working to change that and build a world-first database of Australian children’s voices. https://newsroom.unsw.edu.au/auskidtalk-capture-aussie-kids

11.01.2022 Myth: My child’s speech pathologist has a magic wand. Fact: As much as we would like this to be true, it simply is not. In reality YOU as your child’s primary caregiver are the one who will make the most difference to their progress in therapy. This means being involved in sessions and practising at home.

11.01.2022 Today we had the absolute pleasure of having Miss S's new Assistance Dog & his trainer attend a speech therapy session. This calm, clever and very cute dog comes from Smart Pups. https://www.facebook.com/SmartPups Our whole team were excited to learn all about Assistance Dogs and how we should approach them in the community. ... How is an Assistance Dog different from other dogs? Assistance Dogs are individually trained to provide assistance to a special needs child. Most people are familiar with guide dogs for the blind, helping people with vision impairment. Smart Pups have special ‘task specific’ training so they can assist a young person, from the age of three and up, with handling day-to-day routines and events. What’s the difference between a Guide Dog, Therapy Dog and an Assistance or Service Dog? Guide Dogs assist people who are blind or visually impaired. Therapy Dogs are usually the personal pets of their owner and visit individuals in places such as hospitals or nursing homes. An Assistance Dog is placed as a permanent companion of a special needs person (or person with a disability) and is trained to assist and enable them achieve greater independence. How can I tell if a dog is really an Assistance Dog and not just a pet? When they are out in public all Assistance Dogs wear special collars and harnesses. Assistance Dogs are Public Access Certified. Is it okay to pet an Assistance Dog? It’s always best to ask before petting an Assistance Dog and please be willing to respect the person’s decision if they say no. Assistance Dogs working in public should not be petted if it could distract their focus on ensuring the safety of their special needs child.

We have a reliable and committed team. We have a workplace culture that supports longevity of employment . We are proud to say that we often help clients through many different phases of their life from infancy, toddlerhood, school years and into adulthood. We love that we have had the opportunity to build strong bonds with families over time. 07.01.2022 Congratulations to Sophie for WOWing your therapist Shona with your awesome hardwork this year! Another fabulous WOW award winner for 2020.

07.01.2022 Today marks the start of Children’s Week. The focus for this year: Children have the right to choose their own friends and safely connect with others. This year has been challenging for many children as they have not been able to connect, engage, play and foster relationships in "normal" ways, so this makes it even more important for us to focus on how children can safely connect and ensure friendships remain strong!

06.01.2022 Myth: My child will just catch up to other kids as they get older? Fact: While some children who seem late to develop their communication skills do catch up to their peers without intervention, it is impossible to determine which children will do this naturally and which children will remain delayed. For children with speech, language, literacy or social skills difficulties, the older they get the bigger the gap between them and their peers becomes. Difficulties with communic...ation skills can affect children socially, emotionally and academically. For most children, the earlier their difficulties are identified and treated, the greater the outcome and the less time spent in therapy. Therefore the best course of action is to discuss your concerns with a Speech Pathologist and complete an initial assessment. This can assist in identifying possible difficulties with your child’s communication skills and your Speech Pathologist can work with you and your child to improve those areas.

06.01.2022 Congratulations to Phoebe our first WOW awardee for 2020! Your therapist, Tania has been dazzled by your talking and your hard work this year! We love that you always have a smile at the beginning of every session and that you are such a passionate lover of books and horses!

04.01.2022 This #NAIDOC week, we acknowledge that Indigenous Australian sign languages always were and always will be the first sign languages used on this country’s soil. We would like to share information about Yolu Sign Language (YSL) spoken by the Yolu people of North East Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory, Australia. YSL is an alternative sign language, which means that it is used primarily by hearing people as an alternative to speech in certain situations (although deaf ...people in these communities may also use these sign languages). This beautiful language is one of about a dozen Indigenous sign languages left in the world. We hope that there will be a greater sense of appreciation in our community for Australia’s oldest sign languages, and we are excited to hear that YSL is still being passed from one generation to another in schools in the Northern Territory.

02.01.2022 To all our clients, families and team, we wish you a Happy World Kindness Day!
