25.01.2022 How to deliver the story is a much neglected area of actor education. There are many ways an actor can expand their understanding of story but one is by reading fiction. That's what I have been doing over the holidays and "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine" is a wonderful example of how character drives story.

22.01.2022 It is the decision making process that is responsible for the final outcome in any job. Good decisions point to successful results. This 10 minute session "Talking Acting" explores the key ingredients for the actor.

21.01.2022 How do you play comedy? YOU DON'T TRY TO BE FUNNY. I have been watching "Gap Year" on ABC iview. This 8 episode series, with a lovely young cast, is a great lesson in how to play comedy. They keep it simple, keep it true and keep their choices honest. Highly recommended entertainment.

20.01.2022 Explore any confusion or area you want to that will make your acting career stronger. Yesterday an actor worked on 'what personal brand' should they promote. What do you need to sort out?

14.01.2022 FREE 30-Minute Coaching Session + a Summer Acting Exercise FREE 30-MINUTE COACHING SESSION If you would like a free 30-minute coaching session, on any aspect of your acting process, ring Richard on 0407 226 620 or email [email protected] or Choose any time that suits you in the day or evening.... DIY Summer Acting Exercise A simple exercise you can do on your own. Stretch your acting muscles today. In The Cry, which has just finished another airing on ABCTV, Joanna (Jenna Coleman) is having enormous difficulty in coping with a very new baby who cries constantly. For this exercise you play the parent of the child. The STORY possibilities are that a) You are suffering from depression, can’t relate to your baby and find the crying overwhelming b) You are so over-tired and frustrated that, although you keep trying, you find it hard to relate to the baby the way you want to c) You adore your baby but those feelings sometimes get disrupted by your inability to stop the crying Male or female actors can explore this scene. The aim is to deliver three different levels of balance between the parents ability to cope and their affection for the baby. For an accurate assessment of your skill record a 20 second performance of each of the story options. On replay, observe how clear and believable the differences are. You could use your 30-minute free coaching session to explore your choices in this exercise. TIPS TO CONSIDER Using a sound effect of a baby crying might help - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et5E9AUnYL4 Holding something such as a cushion, a doll or a rolled up bath towel might also give you the chance to have a tactile/physical element to your performance. A simple exercise to get your acting mind working. Enjoy. Richard

10.01.2022 People who make good decisions have a better chance of being successful. The same applies to actors ... so, that is our topic for the FINAL TALKING ACTING for 2020. Listen to this scientist explain the best way to make decisions. https://www.abc.net.au//making-better-decisions-t/12954368 Although he is not talking about acting choices, all the same principles apply ... THEN tune in tomorrow at 5:45pm for 10 minutes of Talking Acting and further insights from a psychologist's point of view. Fascinating.

10.01.2022 What a week it has been ... where illogical processes (logically) produce disastrous outcomes. The way you do something, the process you use, matters.
