21.01.2022 So how long do recruiters look over resumes? The answer may shock you! On average they spend 6 seconds. That's right, 6 seconds! Thats why you want to catch their eye from the beginning and make a great first impression.

07.01.2022 So we spoke last time about tips on how to improve your resume if you are aged 50+. Now let's talk about the interview! Remember when we were talking about how you packaged up your resume using current trends and terminology? Well, all this good stuff is what you will need to carry through into the interview. Now to overcome any biases that people may think about in regards to older workers; they are not current, they don't know the latest and greatest trends or technology, t...hey are set in their ways, they don't really want to learn anything or they are lacking in energy. Let's prove them wrong! So let's say you have won them over with your fabulous upgraded resume. Congratulations, you are 50% there So the next steps are tips for the interview: 1. Make sure that when the interviewer asks you a question you are talking about the latest trends, using the latest terminology, so your stories are filled with currency. 2. You need to be continually reiterating how you love to learn, how you are looking forward to learning these new techniques. You are looking forward to sharing what you know but learning from other people that have gone up through the ranks. 3. You want to make sure you are bringing that good energy. You have got to be vital, full of fun, you've got to bring it, you've got to be excited, the interviewer has got to see that. Ok, so to recap, as far as your resume goes; remember to update the terminology, trimming your resume if needed (as we spoke about in our previous post), use a modern format, don't forget those important keywords, avoid using Times New Roman font as it is quiet dating, get certifications and training, and network, a lot of people get jobs through people they know. If you are applying for jobs online, make sure you have an ATS compatible resume as it increases your chances of bypassing the ATS software that many businesses and companies use these days. Do whatever else you need to increase your chances of success. In that interview, bring that good energy, make sure your responses are extremely current as far as the terminology and the trends go, and you also reiterate your enthusiasm for learning. If you do those things you have a much better chance at overcoming age bias or someone's preconceived ideas. Remember to have faith in yourself, you have lots to offer and you have a lot of exciting things to learn. As Henry Ford once aptly said: Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. Henry Ford

07.01.2022 Hands up how many people have contact referees on their resumes At The Resume' Creative, we do not put on contact references on our resumes, instead we put them on a separate sheet, and here's why! Reason 1: Considering recruiters only have about 6 seconds on average to cast an eye over your resume, they will not have time to read through your contact references and ring 4 or so people you have listed on there. ... Reason 2: Many job applications are online these days and uploading peoples' personal contact details online for all to see may leave your contacts less than impressed. This is why we choose to offer a separate contact reference page to give the prospective employer during the interview (should they request one). So in a nut shell, these are some of the reasons why The Resume' Creative does not put your contacts on your resume See more

05.01.2022 Job tips for people aged 50+ So let's look at some strategies to help you get to the interview (we will address what to do at the interview another time). Now to fight any age bias, thinking that your methods are stale and outdated for example (it does sometimes happen even though it shouldn't), one of the greatest ways to overcome this in your resume is to make sure you are using current terminology and current vernacular, do your research on all the latest trends. So, if y...ou need to change the old wording, that's great! Make sure you use current language to describe what it was that you used to do and also use those important keywords. That's one technique. Another technique is to upskill, do the training courses and get the certifications, so when someone actually gets to read your resume it is engaging, stylistically current, and update your resume template to something more modern if you need too, encompassing all that good stuff . Trimming off some of the old employment or old work opportunities that you have had early in your career can help also as you want to be showcasing your more recent skills and not ones that you haven't used in over a decade for example and not used since. Trimming down to detailing only the past 10 years then a brief overview of past job titles is a good strategy to use to project a contemporary yet experienced persona. Also, don't use Times New Roman (many people perceive it to be dating!). Your resume is your billboard so to speak. Walt Disney and Tom Cruise wouldn't have on their current resumes that they both started out as paper delivery boys would they?. Don't be afraid to get out there, you've got this! See more

04.01.2022 Have you ever applied for a job online? Chances are that you have, and your resume would have been assessed by an Applicant Tracking System (ATS). What does an Applicant Tracking System actually do and what does this mean for your resume?. So firstly, what is an ATS? An ATS acts as an electronic gatekeeper for an employer. Once used by large companies they are now commonplace in businesses of all sizes. The ATS parses a resume's content into categories and then scans it for... specific keywords to determine if the job application should be passed along to the recruiter. Its job is to essentially weed out unqualified or unsuitable applicants so that the recruiter can devote his or her time to evaluating the candidates who are more likely to be a match for the position they are looking to fill. So long before your resume ends up being looked over by a prospective employer, chances are the ATS will be evaluating your resume looking for keywords as well as an ATS compatible layout within your resume. The computer software then decides whether your resume is passed on to the person that is hiring or whether your resume is rejected. This is why when applying for positions online it is important to have an ATS compatible resume in your arsenal of prospective employment tools :) See more
