24.01.2022 Look what just happened for this family today in our family cookalong. A boy who hasn’t eaten vegetables for 4 years ate some today! First he was exposed to watching the raw vegetables for the cook along, then he actually helped sauté them, then after the veg was mixed in with chicken mince, crumbed then baked, he ate them. ... I really do have the ABSOLUTE BEST JOB in the world! Happy dance

23.01.2022 Here's a simple graphic I use when empowering families to make better food choices. Food can be really simple and doesn't need to be made more complicated, although quite often all the marketing often makes it so. Foods that are grown in nature take all the intelligence form earth, and they are wrapped in perfect packages that our body knows how to use and our body needs. These are everyday foods. ... You can take these single ingredients and eat them on their own or you can combine them with other single ingredients to turn them into other foods. Then there are foods that may start in a chemistry lab and they get made in a factory. These send to come in packets, jars, sachets, bottles and the like. Most of these foods are sometimes foods. The Australian Dietary Guidelines recognises many of these foods as discretionary - to be had in small amounts sometimes. These foods are often made using salt, sugar, fats/ oils and additives (and preservatives). Let's be clear here. It's ok to have 'sometimes foods' sometimes. One of the biggest problems facing the world today is that many people are eating what are considered to be sometimes foods every day. That is every day, they are eating foods that our body doesn't need or in some cases, even know how to use properly. In the case of primary aged children, research shows they are eating 4.8 to 6.2 serves of these sometimes foods EVERY.SINGLE.DAY! If you're thinking so what's the big deal, it's this. It is now being reported that by 2025, 8 out of 10 of kids will have some form of chronic illness. EIGHTY PERCENT! A chronic illness is one that requires ongoing medical support or where a child's activities maybe affected. This is why we Stand for Children's Health. The fact you're here in this community means you are concerned about Children's Health too. Tell us, what can we do to better support you?

22.01.2022 We have a family ritual that in the last week of term our kids can have a canteen order. Here’s what our almost 10yo son ordered yesterday. 2 toasted cheese and pineapple sandwiches garlic bread... 300 ml chocolate flavoured milk We usually have a clear food boundary of plain packets not flavoured but the canteen had no plain milk on offer. After some discussion, we agreed this could be a food experiment and he could EXPLORE how his body felt after having the milk. I’ll share the video I recorded with him later. Because I knew he wouldn’t be having a great lunch, I made sure he had a super fantastic breakfast. I’ve included below a photo of his breakfast and what was left afterwards. Being a stand for his health means having boundaries but also being prepared to let go enough so he can learn for himself. His health is not all my job - it’s his too. The best way for him to learn is to explore and discover how food makes him feel. Look out for instalment 2 of this post where I share in his words how his lunch made him feel.

18.01.2022 Homemade Magnums anyone Indrani, our 14yo, is loving making herself smoothie bowls (more like ice cream) for breakfast. She had some leftovers so I popped it in ice cream moulds, then covered them in homemade chocolate. Our son was so excited - "Yum, Homemade Magnums, mum - you're the best!".... I wrote a short blog and recorded a video of how to make the chocolate and cover the the ice blocks. Enjoy! https://therootcause.com.au/how-to-make-homemade-magnums/

17.01.2022 Sharpie & masking tape I’ve tried lots of ways to label things to put into the the freezer and this is the cheapest & easiest I’ve found. Not fancy but it works really well. The tape removes easily after use... It doesn’t come off in the freezer No guessing what’s in the containers Cheap & easy to find If you were wondering, I just make the sauce to freeze to save space in the freezer. Then I defrost, heat and stir through cooked pasta. 17.01.2022 Thought I’d share how I use the homemade breakfast cereal I made the other day during my live. This beautiful jar of art is the cereal layered with breakfast ice cream (that contains sweet potato, zucchini, cashews, my triple G mix, frozen berries, yoghurt and coconut milk, then sliced fresh banana, with the 3 layers done again. Sprinkled with cinnamon on top. Thought I’d also keep it real and show how our 14yo daughter didn’t appreciate my food styling and totally deconstru...cted her breakfast which was a work of art. #healthyoptions #simplerecipes #eattherainbow #standingforchildrenshealth #makingadifference #healthylunchboxes #onelunchboxatatime #schoolfoodideas #easyentertaining #foodchoices #familyfavourites #kidsfoodquest #cookingathome #cookalong #familytime #realfoodforkids #wholefoodfamiy #isoactivities #schoolholidays #kidsinthekitchen #instafood #lunchboxlove #childrenshealth #certifiedinstructor #supportingparents #communityhealth #raisingawareness

17.01.2022 Over the last 8 years of raising awareness about the need to ask What’s In my Food?, we have often been called all sorts of names... Nut job Scare mongerer Liar... And these are the mild ones. Many people say... it wouldn’t be allowed in our food if it wasn’t ok The Govt wouldn’t approve it if it wasn’t ok But we Stand for Children’s Health and will ALWAYS cop all the names and negative comments on the chin for the sake of making a difference for yours and our kids. We know strength is in numbers. So please stand with us and others like Frankie from Additive Free Kids, as we try to raise awareness about what’s in my food. Knowledge is power. It gives one the strength to be a stand regardless of what others say. Once you learn what’s in my food?, it’s hard to keep turning a blind eye. I encourage you to read the post below from Frankie and join her newsletter list. Knowledge is power. It gives us strength . Join Frankie’s email list and gain even more knowledge.

12.01.2022 Another awesome snack post by Amanda from Practical Nutrition and Wellness

12.01.2022 I love this post by Amanda from Practical Nutrition and Wellness. She shares how simple it is to make homemade popcorn from scratch in the microwave. Seriously simple - one ingredient. Popcorn kernels then you can add your own flavouring afterwards if you wish. Have you ever looked at What’s In My Food? in a bag of microwave popcorn? Ingredients made in a chemistry lab that you will never have in your own pantry. Not to mention the concerns raised about the lining of those... microwave bags. If you have a microwave, why not make a fun school holiday cooking activity of making your own microwave popcorn using Amanda’s idea. Amanda is our Adelaide based Certified Instructor and she helps schools and parents empower kids to make better food choices. Check out her Facebook page for more great ideas.

11.01.2022 The 3rd Sunday of the month we run a Family Cookalong. This month our Kids Quest Explorers and their families are making Design Your Own Nuggets. I love how the cook alongs are getting the whole family into the kitchen. Check out how empowered these 2 boys are - they are doing their prep work for the cook along. As part of the cook alongs, kids take ownership of what ingredients they are putting in their recipe (from a base recipe we provide), then to we do a shopping li...st and are involved in the prep and cooking. Kids using their own family food science using real food ingredients.

05.01.2022 Birthday inspired ice cream recipe... I can hardly believe it but our little guy is turning 10 in 2 weeks time. Where does time go? This year he has chosen an ‘experience’ for his birthday present rather than toys. He’s asked if he can have his best friend sleep over and they have 2 days of fun. One at the skate park and the other at Computer Capers playing Minecraft. And he’s asked if they can have ice cream for breakfast. ... We’ve been trialing some different flavours of homemade ice cream. This Salted Caramel Macadamia Nut Nice Cream got a thumbs up. Give it a go. Let me know what you think. - 3 frozen bananas - 2 medjool dates roughly chopped - a handful of macadamias roughly chopped - splash of vanilla extract - pinch of sea salt - 1 tblspn coconut milk Blitz in Food processor (I used my Thermomix - done in under a minute) To boost nutrition, I added a topping of my homemade versatile muesli https://therootcause.com.au/oh-so-versatile-muesli-recipe/ There’s a berry flavoured ice cream and a chocolate one too. Not sure which one will be the winner yet. Let me know in the comments if you want to try these out too.

02.01.2022 FIVE YEARS AGO... We picked up our big green bus - Kaley. She became our home and our mobile billboard for our mission to Transform Children’s Health. For 2.5 yrs we travelled Australia visiting 90 schools and empowering over 20,000 children, parents and teachers to make better food choices. We ran community events and worked alongside councils and libraries, all who saw a value in our message of how food can make us feel many different ways and we need to start asking Wha...Continue reading
