20.01.2022 From Ian Banks-Smith: This Miniature rose ‘Irresistible’ bred by Cecilia L. Bennett in 1989 USA, really is amazing. Even though I do favour strong colours, I also like clean paler colours - apricot and buff/pink tick all my boxes. So, with the very warm/ hot January days presently in Melbourne, ‘Irresistible‘ has morphed into a treasure; cream/ white blooms with pink/buff yellow tonings at its centre. The ‘Cut’ pictured is from my garden plant. Interestingly my potted plant h...ad flowers with quite yellow centres and no pink. When judging ‘Miniature Cuts’ with 3 or more blooms, the blooms should be evenly distributed in a well balanced head (terminal cluster). A ‘Cut’ is an original new growth that carries more than one bloom, and/or bud or buds. The very experienced exhibitor Rosalie Parsons, exhibited a bunch of ‘Irresistible’ at the 2019 RSV Spring show. All the blooms were as close to perfection as anyone could achieve. What a treat for the eyes that was. See more

15.01.2022 From Ian Banks-Smith: Two bunches photographed at night and during the day. These bunches of blooms were picked from my Ashburton(Vic) garden in the morning prior to the 35 degree day. I kept them stored in my garage for 2 days before placing in vases. They fared well in the cool garage. All Hybrid Teas. Bunch #1(yellows/pinks)- Helmut Schmidt, Elina, Auckland Metro, Gemini, The Lady, Gold Medal. Bunch #2 - Aotearoa, Gemini, Just Joey, Kardinal ‘85, Papa Meilland, Double Delight.

09.01.2022 From Ian Banks-Smith: The very popular and much loved Hybrid Tea rose 'Double Delight', was bred by H. Swim & Ellis in 1976 USA. It received the AARS (All-America Rose Selections) award in 1977. The bloom has a very strong spicy fragrance with up to 30-45 petals and 5 inches wide. Its phototropic character of turning red in the sun saved it from being discarded as just another ‘white’ rose. I arrived back home to my garden in Ashburton, after a 4-day getaway, to find this wonderful bloom. It was most surprising as I expecting all the blooms to be devastated from the heavy rains. I have 3 plants of Double Delight and all photos (except the image with the liliums) show the same stem and bloom under varying lighting conditions.

07.01.2022 From Ian Banks-Smith: All Hybrid Teas apart from one bloom of Woburn Abbey, the orange/ yellow blend rose. Pictured from left is Camp David and Admiral Rodney, 2 of my very favourite HT’s. The small bunch includes: Diamond Jubilee, Grande Amore, Helmut Schmidt, Tequila Sunrise, Karen Blixen and Woburn Abbey. The taller bunch includes: Sundance, Charles de Gaulle, Precious Michelle and Memoire.

02.01.2022 REMINDER: We are looking forward to seeing everyone on ZOOM for our first meeting of the year this Tuesday 9th February at 8pm. Hope you can join us!
