25.01.2022 Here she is all dressed in blue - you might have noticed external restoration works at the Royal George are in full swing. We are so pleased to be underway and bringing this beautiful building back to life.

22.01.2022 The unveiling of the 'flagpole'. Part of what makes the Royal George so distinct, the original beam has been restored and repainted to return it to its former glory. The sphere that sits at the tip is called a 'finial ball' and in some cases houses a razor blade, match and bullet. The razor blade is to cut the stars out of the flag, the match is to burn the remains and the bullet is to defend the fort. While we don't think this was the case at the Royal George, it's a little piece of history that will continue to live on.

18.01.2022 We are pleased to share that restoration works will be commencing this month for the historic Royal George Hotel. A building permit has been granted for initial works only, which will focus on the majority of the external restoration such as the distinctive cupola, external George and Duke Street façades, roof, all chimneys, exterior windows, doors and verandah. The remaining interior restoration works as well as proposed uses for the Hotel and development on the vacant land at the rear of the property will require a new development application expected to be lodged later in the year.

10.01.2022 The grandeur of the Royal George a wonderful example of a gold rush era hotel. Lying dormant for many years, we plan to faithfully restore this important building to its former glory for all to enjoy once again.

09.01.2022 What’s happening beneath the scaffolding? We have been working our way from the top of the building down, starting with the replacement of the roof and cupola shingles. Many of the existing shingles were severely damaged and beyond repair. To ensure an accurate replacement of the original, we had the materials tested for chemical composition and found they were zinc. We also discovered some plans from the manufacturer which has helped to determine the correct detailing for t...he reproduced shingles. These are being crafted by a local roofing manufacturer. There is also a lot of repair work happening inside the cupola (pictured) including new tie downs to anchor the roof to the structure, replacing degraded sarking boards, cleaning and sanding back old timbers, reinforcing the existing joints in the roof, new waterproofing treatments to stop water ingress and re-anchoring the spire.

04.01.2022 We have been starting to lay hand-crafted zinc shingles on the cupola - already beginning to develop a beautiful patina. The remaining shingles will be laid once the dormers have been restored, which are the decorative metal vents adorning the exterior of the cupola. Through exploring the original plans, we discovered that the shingles weren't painted originally, so we will be leaving them in a natural zinc finish, which will continue to develop a deeper patina over time. We are looking forward to being able to reveal the building's crowning glory in due course.
