20.01.2022 The train: The 20th Century Limited first ran in 1902, completing its inaugural journey from New York to Chicago in 20 hours four hours less than previous trains arriving three minutes ahead of schedule. Amongst other amenities, it offered on-board barbershop and secretarial services. The schedule cut two more hours off the run within three years and, by the 1930s, travel time had dropped to 16 hours. The basic fare of approximately $US60 in the 1930s entitled a passenger to a bed, closed off from the aisle by curtains. A compartment cost much more. In 1928, the peak year, the train earned revenue of $10 million and was believed to be the most profitable train in the world. Get your train tickets now! 15.01.2022 Twentieth Century: The story: Set in the 1930s, Broadway ballyhoo meets Hollywood hustle. Its about Oscar Jaffe (Lindsay Dunn), an egomaniacal Broadway director, and Lily Garland (Shelley Crooks), the chorus girl he transformed into a leading lady. Following a massive falling-out some years previously, she has gone on to become a major Hollywood star. Oscar almost bankrupt, with his career on a downslide boards the Twentieth Century Limited knowing that Lily will also b...e boarding. Hell do anything to get her back under contract, and in his bed, but his former protge will have nothing to do with him. Trying to make sense of the chaos are Oscars long-time and long-suffering assistants, Webb (Maxine Grubel) and OMalley (Steven Bills), and the harassed train conductor (Frank Cwiertniak). Other characters include George, Lilys (younger) lover and current agent (Tom Filsell); Max Jacobs (a Broadway producer, a rival of Jaffes) (Damien White); and a religious fanatic escaped from an institution (John Leigh Gray). On the legendary Twentieth Century train from Chicago to New York City, Oscar has 16 hours to persuade Lily to return to Broadway in his next show. If he fails, its the end of the line. 15.01.2022 Vale Claire Leahy OAM Therrys Vice-President Claire Leahy passed away on 3 July 2020, aged 92 years. Her contribution to Therry was enormous. She joined in 1946 and was continuously on our Council for 65 years. Her delightful sense of humour and quick repartee was legendary - perhaps not so apparent in recent years. She found her failing health difficult to cope with, but never lost that sense of humour.... Claires death is the passing of an era. She was a musician, actress, director, and held positions on council include President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Publicity Officer. No doubt shell keep on reminding those in heaven about Therry and be giving out brochures. Our thoughts are with her sister, Mary Hogan, and her many nieces and nephews and their families. Rest In Peace Claire.

02.01.2022 The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that - for the first time in 77 years Therry has taken a break from producing, rehearsing and performing which has allowed us to do some long-deferred housekeeping. Our construction team has been cleaning, tidying and culling our set construction area, materials and furniture. Costumiers have been doing a similar chore in our wardrobe department and several intrepid council members have taken on the task of sorting our office area and associated filing and storage. Their efforts are very much appreciated.
