20.01.2022 PREVIEW: Olympians set to light up SA Athletics stadium in the 5000m state titles Senior Women's Title The women's 5000m will see the return of duel Olympic mar...athon representative Jessica Trengove to the track. Fresh off the journey to Rio, Jess will be utilising this 5k race a bit of a guide of where she is at prior heading into a big 2017. Even though Trengove has enjoyed a well earned break post Rio, she is the only runner in the field with a sub 16 PB (15.58 - 2013) and has eased straight back in to training nicely these past few month, with the only hiccup being scalped by her partner and middle distance sensation (Dylan Stenson) in a ambassadors 10km road event in port Douglass recently. No doubt Jess will be looking to kick of her track season strongly on Wednesday night. The quality of this ladies race will no doubt be lifted with the entry of Casey Wood. The daughter of SA marathon legend, Grenville Wood, Casey was the first SA girl home in the city to bay and ran a solid 10km road race in Tasmania only a couple weeks ago. Casey is the process of training for her first marathon, and will be looking to make this 5000m race a really good hit out prior to the Zatopek 10k only 8 days later. SA female distance running is the real winner with Casey returning back to the track post a few injuries that look well behind her now, and let's not forget that with a PB of 16.10 for 5km (2014), Casey is a genuine chance to take the crown Wednesday night, and may well be looking to crack that 16min barrier along the way. Former AIS road cyclist Sinead Noonan and recent Physiotherapy graduate will take on her first track state title. Sinead has made a fairly smooth transition from the bike to running with a few winter results to get excited about this new talent, including the SA 10km road title (36.48). Sinead had her first taste of SA athletics stadium, where she lowered her 3000m PB to 10:10 and no doubt will thrive on chasing both Casey and Jess for the extra 2000m on Wednesday night. Team tempo's Caitlin Adams who was the 3rd SA lady home in the city to bay has had a strong winter and will be looking to push for a medal on Wednesday night. A gutsy runner who gives it everything she has every time she competes, I expect Caitlin to make the most of a quality line up Wednesday night and crush her track PB (17.38) and push for a podium spot. We're expecting a hot night on the track and a lot of girls will be searching for PB's at SA athletics stadium. Tips: Trengove Wood Noonan Time: 16.21 Senior Men's Title Well it's fair to say that Wednesday night at SA athletics stadium we may see one of the most impressive performances we ever see in Adelaide's athletic history. The lucky inhabitants of Adelaide have the opportunity to witness one the best athletes on the face of the earth take part in the 5000m. Dual USA olympian Lopez Lomong MAY contest the SA 5000m state title. To give a little perspective of the Calibre of athlete Lopez is, well his PBs tell the story. Lopez has run a 3.51 mile, and a 13.07 5000m, and for all of you football fans out there who think your AFL players are ' the pinnacle of fitness' running about 9-10mins for 3000m...... Well, let's just say Lopez would be quite possibly to lapping most of them twice of the athletics track (7.39 PB). The story of Lopez Lomong's life is quite extraordinary and I couldn't recommend reading a book any more highly than his biography: At the very bare minimum, I suggest all the local sporting enthusiasts to make their way down to SA athletics stadium on Wednesday night to see what it looks like for a man to cover 5000m in less than 14mins. I can promise it will be something special, and as my wife says, Lopez just puts 'style' into running...... There is an artistic form to his running that draws ones attention to it. However, while Lopez has a CV that is a class above the rest on paper there is a lot of excitement about SA distance runners right now. This may well be one of the most competitive 5000m state title events we have had for close to a decade. Riley Cocks who broke through for a huge PB last March over this distance (14.10), he's ready to run fast in order to get a time for Zatopek the following week held at Albert Park in Melbourne. Riley is probably one of the few guys who can probably hold to Lopez for a long time and pull him into around that PB time of his. The excitement extends through to his brother Jacob Cocks who recently cracked his 5k PB at the Victoria state titles (14.32) is right up to his ears for a podium spot, and will be thinking about breaking that 14:30 barrier. Jacob's training partner, Max Stevens continues to win most improved each year. After a massive winter which included a Fitzy's 5 win, Max opened up his track season at the Victorian state titles in the B race where he did all the work and still managed to come home with a massive PB of 14.42. The 22 year old may well challenge his team mates for a medal if he continues to improve at the rate he is. The enigma of the race is Adelaide Harriers Adrian Potter. Potter who is new to the sport, and training partner of SA's top miler Rhys Jones, ruffled a few feathers in the winter after he won the state 10km road title and then within a fortnight dropped his 10km PB at the Gold Coast to 30.42. A very gifted runner, he was out kicked by Max Stevens at Fitzy's 5, and I highly doubt he will be leaving it to a kick this Wednesday night. A super exciting talent, there is just every chance Wednesday night may be Peanut Butter Potter time. It's worth noting a few of the junior Runner's who will have a dig, who will be battling out the U20 titles: Cam Clohesy, Matthew Gluyas and Sam Tierney will all be pushing for a sub 16 5000m. In the O35's, I expect to see the evergreen Mulholland break 16min on the track for the first time and show everyone how you can still make improvements as a runner as a 40 year old. Paul is genuinely an example of consistency, and it will be even more exciting if we see his fellow Adelaide Harrier team mate, Bryn Nicholls line up on Wednesday night to push each other. Tips: Lopez Lomong Riley Cocks Jacob Cocks Time: 13:54 Schedule: Senior Women: 8pm Senior Men: 8:30pm Location: SA Athletics Stadium
