19.01.2022 I dont know where the limits are, but I would like to go there - @kipchogeeliud . Today this man, Eliud Kipchoge, will attempt what has never been done, to run a marathon or 42.195km in under 2 hours as part of the @ineos159challenge . Eliud is the most decorated marathon runner...ever. He won the Olympic marathon in 2016 and is the current marathon world record holder with a time of 2:01:39 hours. He has won gold in 8 Marathon Majors.... . To help him achieve this amazing feat he will run on an almost flat course (gradient change of 0.006% in Vienna, Austria . . Forty-one world-class distance runners have been recruited as pacemakers, and they will take turns in a different formation to that seen in the previous attempt. Five athletes will run in front of Kipchoge in a V-shape, with two athletes just behind him to either side, which was found during testing as the most efficient way to reduce drag. . A car will once be driven in front of the runners at a controlled pace of 2:50 per kilometer (4:33 per mile), with a line projected on the road for runners to follow. . He will also be running with Nikes prototype shoe, the Vaporfly 4% Next. The shoe features a carbon fiber plate and pod like cushioning to help propel the athlete forward. . Can he do it? 11.01.2022 Devastating news to hear that Kenenisa Bekele has pulled out of the London marathon! Thoughtful analysis by @nickreessportsphysio which I fully agree with (see below): #repost The anticipation for the London marathon has been huge, in particular for the showdown between Kenenisa Bekele and Eliud Kipchoge. With the news that Bekele has pulled out with a calf injury, that dream is dashed (thanks 2020). ... But the most interesting thing for me is that he has in part attributed the injury to running in the newest versions of the Nike Alphafly and that he finds them unstable. See the quotes on the 2nd and 3rd slides. Here’s my thoughts and analysis: The Alphaflys have a higher stack height than the Vaporfly. Running in a higher stack shoe is inherently less stable - a truck is more likely to roll over than a car. The Nike super shoes also have a LOT of cushioning. This is fantastic for recoil and performance, but more cushioning = less stable. Combine this with the stack and you can see how it could feel unstable. (There is also definitely some technique involvement here). When we run on an unstable surface, we stiffen to adapt and create propulsion. (See my post from last week about running on different surfaces). This mechanism is very helpful but it is extra work for the muscles in the leg and foot. Think how your calves are often more sore after running on sand. So there may be a tipping point (hah) for some runners where the downside of the shoe outweighs the performance benefits of the foam and stack height. In particular regarding injury. This point will be individual too. Note: no injury is all about the shoe. Bekele does reference doing big interval sessions as a factor too. But it’s important to pick the right shoe for the individual and their running. See more
