23.01.2022 FOUR WEEKS until Christmas Day Why not begin this season with a good deed by checking in and calling a friend who might be feeling lonely or doing it tough? Or, if you can, donating just $5 will allow a caring Salvo to call an elderly person who is alone on Christmas Day. Go to: https://fal.cn/3bQrH #TheSalvationArmy #Christmas2020 #GiveHope

22.01.2022 When Alecia* reached out to The Salvation Army for help, she couldn’t look her support worker in the eye. She’d spent nine years with a husband who didn’t allow her to speak, think or act without his permission. Alecia’s husband was a high functioning corporate worker who physically, financially and emotionally controlled and abused his wife. He kept her isolated in the family home for many years, until he found a new partner and Alecia was moved into the garden shed. After ...learning her daughter was unsettled at school, Alecia reached out for help. The Salvation Army team organised emergency accommodation, arranged counselling, and connected her with a legal service. Alecia now has a job and is rebuilding her life. November 25 is the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, but tragically, many women and girls in Australia, and internationally, remain unsafe in their own homes. Many face emotional, verbal, sexual, financial and physical abuse even the threat of death making home more of a prison, than a safe haven. If you, or someone you know, is experiencing family and domestic violence and needs support, please visit: https://fal.cn/3bNKg #TheSalvationArmy #EliminateViolence #IDEVAW #GenerationEquality #16Days *Name and some details changed to protect identity.

19.01.2022 #NAIDOC2020 - Sharing essential stories through art Beginning Sunday, National NAIDOC Week 2020 is an opportunity for all Australians to celebrate the rich history, diverse cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the oldest continuing living cultures on the planet. Encouraging creativity and the sharing of stories around country, community and culture is the focus of a dedicated creative art space at The Salvation Army Doorways Hu...b in Katherine, 270km south of Darwin. Artist Aunty Janet Dreamer said she has been painting since she was in her teens, but it is only through the access to supplies the hub offers that she has been able to start again. "I love to paint birds and kangaroos, anything from the bush, and especially if it's good tucker," she said. To read more about the art hub, go to: https://fal.cn/3boD4 #NAIDOCWeek #NAIDOCWeek2020

When relocating to Sydney, Hazel met her future husband Fred Vickery. They married in 1947 and went on to have four children, one of which later became a Salvos Officer. ... Hazel is a valued member of the Parramatta Corps and an amazing person with a dry sense of humour and a keen interest in her corps, Grant Sandercock-Brown from Parramatta Salvos says. She is a constant encouragement! We thank God for her and pray every blessing on her for the future. *Hazel is pictured with Bruce Bowie, who regularly transports Hazel to church. 14.01.2022 In a year that many are happy to put behind them, gestures of care and kindness have become particularly precious. For communities who were devastated by the Black Summer bushfires, followed by COVID-19, these gestures and the opportunity to take a break from the (new) normal can make for a welcome distraction. Accompanied by Samantha Jade, Woolworths S.T.A.N.D ambassador Adam Goodes and TV chef Ed Halmagyi (a.k.a. ‘Fast Ed’), we headed to the NSW South Coast to throw suppor...t around the community and spread some Christmas cheer. In ‘Christmas With The Salvos’ you’ll meet Leisa, Sara and Brett who share their own experiences of living through the horrific bushfires, what the recovery phase has looked like and how ongoing support has helped them through this year. ‘Christmas With The Salvos’ premieres on December 12 at 1pm on Channel 7. If you or someone you know needs help this Christmas, go to: https://fal.cn/3c86Y You can donate now and help us bring hope and joy to communities that have had a tough year. 12.01.2022 Today we're in bushfire affected areas of the NSW South Coast to hear the stories of Australians impacted by the bushfires and how they've been helped by the local Salvos. Here is Brett sharing his story with Woolworths S.T.A.N.D ambassador Adam Goodes. Brett lost everything in the fires and has been assisted by grants from our local teams. You'll hear more from Brett and many more during our TV special in December.

11.01.2022 The Salvation Army not only saved my life, but the life of four children who were given the chance to have a really good, happy childhood. - Rosemary. Rosemary is passionate about her work as a Salvos Christmas Coordinator supporting those in need, because she knows what it is like to struggle at Christmas ... When her marriage broke up more than 30 years ago, she was left to raise four children alone. She had married at 17 and soon discovered her husband struggled with alcoholism. Living with family and domestic violence, she says, I was frightened. I know what it is like to wear long sleeves, so people don’t see the bruises. My husband would tell me that I’m good for nothing and you just get to the point where you believe that. Not knowing where to turn, Rosemary and her children felt trapped. She had no idea that The Salvation Army could help until she started taking her son to a Salvos youth program. When I got (to the Salvos) the officer there spoke to me, then called in the welfare worker. They then found my children and myself a place to stay. They opened the family store to get clothes and organise food. They put me through a course to build up my self-esteem and work through my years of abuse. They continued to work with me for a number of years, helping with Christmas gifts and food, camps, and in many other ways. Rosemary went on to volunteer and then work in a number of roles with the Salvos. Helping others through her local Salvos at Christmas time is her favourite role. The Salvos are here for you this Christmas. If you need support or financial assistance, please reach out. Go to for more information: https://fal.cn/3bDVM

11.01.2022 Today we were joined by NSW Premier The Hon. Gladys Berejiklian, MP who helped launch our annual Christmas Research. It’s been a very difficult year for all of us in New South Wales and around Australia and The Salvation Army has been there every step of the way supporting our citizens. As has been highlighted, many people this year have come forward needing things they may never have expected to need, or asking for a helping hand they may have never accepted or presumed th...ey would beforehand. - Gladys Berejiklian. After the devastating financial and emotional impacts of COVID-19 and natural disasters experienced this year, more than 8.1 million Aussies (41%) are feeling financially stressed this Christmas. That’s why, this year, the work of our local teams and volunteers is more important than ever. Our research also found: 38% are more stressed about their finances compared to last year demonstrating the widespread impact of COVID-19. More people are feeling anxious (32%), depressed (25%), lonely (29%), stressed (36%) and uncertain (38%), when compared with last year. 2.1 million Australians (11%) are concerned their children will miss out on food and basic living necessities this Christmas. To explore more of our research findings, go to: https://fal.cn/3c6oH #TheSalvationArmy #Salvos #GladysBerejiklian #Christmas2020

10.01.2022 RITCHIES + SALVOS = Helping those in need Ritchies Supermarkets are celebrating their 150th anniversary, with this huge milestone they're also celebrating their support for the community and are continuing to partner with The Salvation Army to assist those most in need. You can help too, by joining the Ritchies Community Benefit Card Program and selecting The Salvation Army as your charity of choice so we can continue to work together and help make a big difference for loc...al communities. So far, The Community Benefits program has raised over $1.5 million nationally, enabling our local teams to support communities in times of hardship. Captain Wes Bust (pictured, left), Corp Officer in Fassifern Queensland knows all too well the importance of the local community standing together to get through hard times. Early this year when Wes was informed of a local house fire in town, he learnt that a young family had lost everything, their entire house, school uniforms, school books, treasured possessions, absolutely everything had perished. With our support, the family were able to replace many of their perished belongings. This wouldn’t have been possible without the locals supporting The Salvation Army through the Ritchies Community Benefit program, said Wes. 03.01.2022 When the catastrophic bushfires of 2019-2020 had the country in its grip, Salvation Army Emergency Services (SAES) swiftly responded. And in a year marked by disaster, they remain prepped and ready to assist whenever they are needed. For the full story: https://fal.cn/3bfnC Topher Holland (pictured), General Manager of The Salvation Army’s Strategic and Disaster Management unit, oversaw the widespread response that covered more than 290 locations at evacuation centres and... firegrounds during the disaster. With years of experience working in disaster management, Topher understands that for many people, it takes time to be ready to rebuild not just their homes but also their lives. The Salvation Army make the statement, ‘We’re there for the long haul’ but we don’t want that to mean that we hold back resources. We want to do the journey with people. So, we meet people at that point of need, and moving forward, that need changes as people go through that recovery and rebuild. Some people aren’t going to recover, so their lives have to be rebuilt around a new normal. It is forecasted that this summer, Australia will see a range of extreme weather events with floods, cyclones and bushfires all likely to make an impact. SAES teams stand ready to respond to whatever the emergency may be. #TheSalvationArmy #SalvosBushfireRecovery See more
