06.01.2022 Bushfire Recovery Seven months on from the Black Summer bushfires, our local teams are still working in affected communities to help individuals, families and... communities recover. Many members of the public have been wondering why all funds aren’t distributed immediately to those affected. We’ve been responding to disasters since 1887 and have learned a lot over that time about what true recovery looks like. One thing all crises have in common is the trail of destruction that follows, which means years of working to bring about restoration. We know from experience that people’s needs change over time. For example, immediately after the fires, people’s needs were accommodation, food or fuel, but as time has progressed and people are looking to the next stage of recovery, the costs are often more substantial. Those rebuilding homes may be faced with hold ups such as insurance claims, drafting plans, applying for permits, contracting builders and clearing rubble from their land. Those living in rental properties destroyed by fires must find new accommodation in communities suffering multiple property losses. This phase of longer-term recovery and rebuilding is the most expensive and where our grants are available for people to access. As of 16 June 2020, The Salvation Army has distributed $22 million in direct financial assistance to support more than 11,500 Australians. If you or someone you need is seeking support after being affected by the bushfires, please contact our Bushfire Recovery team on [email protected] or 1300 662 217.
