25.01.2022 Love Your Exams! Form positive associations between the exam experience and successfully completing exams with little or no anxiety. Do this by studying in the room where youll be sitting your exam and by regularly telling yourself that you really do love exams! Yes it does sound quite silly, but you can convince yourself of almost anything by indoctrination!
24.01.2022 Music & Studying Can you listen to music while studying? If the work youre doing isnt hard and youre not stressed or under time constraints, then listening to music at low volume is OK. But if youre stressed or working on difficult materials or memorising information for a test or exam, then its best not to listen to music at the same time. Listening to music decreases the amount of information that can be processed by the brain, which means that it will take you longer to complete your studies!

23.01.2022 Assessor Expectations Students often sit their exams unaware of assessor expectations and dont provide well-structured answers that can be awarded full marks. Many students also lack sufficient knowledge of the common errors made in exams, as well as the various tricks and traps that are used to determine which students receive the higher marks. Therefore, work through at least 15 exam papers in each subject, and attend quality revision lectures that are being delivered by experienced VCE teachers and VCAA exam markers. 23.01.2022 Using Pattern Recognition to Your Advantage Work through at least 3 exam papers under exam conditions in the days before each subject exam. This will give your brain the opportunity to determine the pattern in responding to exam papers. Your brain will then be able to recognise and fall into a similar mindset/approach when sitting an actual exam. If youre feeling stressed or lack confidence in a topic, work through papers in an open book fashion. Progressively build up to a closed book scenario by the time you address your third exam.
22.01.2022 Radiation and Sleep Radiation from mobile phones delays and reduces sleep, and causes headaches and confusion. The research, which was sponsored by mobile phone companies themselves, shows that using handsets in the hour before sleep causes people to take longer to reach the deeper stages of sleep and to spend less time in them. This interferes with the body's ability to repair damage, causes mood and personality changes, ADD-like symptoms, depression, lack of concentration and reduced academic performance.
22.01.2022 Just 80 days left before the VCE English exam! To help students with their exam preparations, check out Freebie Friday tomorrow.
21.01.2022 Effectiveness of Lectures When preparing for exams, save huge amounts of time by attending quality revision programs, such as those delivered by TSFX. Learning via seeing and hearing (as in the case of lectures and classroom instruction) is a very effective way to commit course materials to memory. Youll cover at least 5 times more theory and absorb 5 times more information in a lecture or classroom than if you were to work through the materials on your own! Youll also get a fully comprehensive set of A+ notes at no charge saving you the time and effort of preparing your own! Vacancies are now strictly limited. More info & enrolments: https://zcu.io/s4Sy

20.01.2022 Hey Hey It's Saturday
20.01.2022 Test the Real Thing Students often get lower marks than what they otherwise could as they werent able to complete their exam papers in the available time. You should therefore sit three official papers under examination conditions so you can determine the best pace to adopt on the day of a subject exam.
20.01.2022 Revise Twice If youre aiming for the higher ATARs, youll need to work through course materials at least twice before your exams. Use a different revision strategy each time you revisit the same topics enabling you to retain more information and to develop stronger application skills.
20.01.2022 Tuesday Treat Can someone come up with a better name for Tuesday posts??????
20.01.2022 Take Your Teachers Into Your Exams Stuck on a question during an exam? Try reading the question in your teachers voice. The brain is able to retrieve information more effectively if its delivered in the same voice that was used to teach or review the materials.
19.01.2022 Exam Preparation When studying, don’t just concentrate on exam papers work through the exam reports as well. These will highlight the key areas students struggled with and may foreshadow future exam questions. They can also clarify common student errors and inform you of terminology or responses that will no longer earn you exam marks.

17.01.2022 Preparing for Problem-Solving/Analysis Style Questions So, you might feel like you know everything in the curriculum and can answer most questions really well. However, if youre getting tripped up with the more in-depth questions, you need to change the way youre learning. Take a single-sentence concept like The mitochondria are the power-house of the cell. Then, try to write one entire page of information about that single sentence. You can start by defining the key te...rms followed by why/what/where and how questions relating to those terms. What do we mean by power-house? Why does a cell need a power-house? What does it use power for? How does a mitochondrion generate power? What does it need in order to do so? What happens if a cell lacks mitochondria? Explore these in-depth questions and try to apply genuine curiosity to the task. This approach will improve your ability to answer problem-solving and analysis questions, a task which is impossible to do by rote-memorisation.

15.01.2022 No Notes Although its important to have a comprehensive set of notes from which to learn, spending large amounts of time preparing such materials in the weeks leading up to the exams is a huge waste of time. Writing, re-writing and silent reading are only effective (and only moderately so) if the materials are of great interest, which is usually not the case when preparing for tests and exams! The writing process is also time consuming, reducing the time available to memorise information and to work through practice exam papers. So dont write notes in the lead up to the exams use your text books instead. If youre attending our VCE Exam Revision Lectures youll get a detailed and comprehensive set of A+ notes that include every concept you need to learn. 13.01.2022 How We Feel on the Day of an Exam How we perform in our exams is largely determined by how well we feel on the day of our exams. Knowing this, you should create a regime and an environment that you know will bring you calm, confidence and create a good mood. Suggestions include: Listening to your favourite music preferably music that gets you pumped up; a pre-bedtime pamper session; listening to something that makes you laugh eg. recordings of comedians, funny cartoon shows etc. If your parents or siblings are a source of anxiety plan to leave home earlier and take public transport to school.
12.01.2022 More About Sleep The benefits of a proper nights sleep can never be underestimated. Sleep reduces stress and helps your brain assimilate new knowledge into your long-term memory so that you can recall it when it comes to exam day. Anyone who has tried to concentrate with half a nights sleep will testify to improved focus with better sleep. For your bodys best performance, make sure youre getting 8/9 hours of sleep each day while youre preparing for your exams.
12.01.2022 Test at the Beginning of Each Revision Session Start every revision session with a test so you can determine what needs to be reviewed from the previous days study session and which areas need the greatest attention in the new topic being addressed.

09.01.2022 How Many Subjects Should You Work on Each Day? When it comes to exam preparations, students often get anxious when they only concentrate on 1 subject at a time. Although students who adopt this approach are still learning the same volume of materials as others, many feel that theyre not making sufficient progress as theyre not attending to other subjects. We therefore recommend that you work on 2 to 3 subjects each day.

08.01.2022 The Benefits of Different Perspectives If you're aiming for the higher English exam marks, you need to provide responses that stand out above other student papers, which is a challenging task when you consider that over 40,000 students sit a VCE English exam each year! You should therefore seek exposure to as many different teachers' perspectives as possible, rather than just relying on the advice of your tutors and classroom teachers. Get a senior VCAA assessors perspective at our VCE Exam Revision Lectures that are being held online during the September school holidays. Visit the TSFX website for more information.
05.01.2022 Hey Hey It's Saturday!
04.01.2022 Get Comfortable Find a desk in the exam room where you’re comfortable sitting at. Pick a seat away from sources of distraction like wall charts or maps, aisles, doors, and windows and consider the path that people will take as they’re leaving the exam room (sit as far away from there as possible). The seat should be in a well-lit and well-ventilated section of the room near a cooling duct (if you strongly feel the heat) or near a heating duct (if you strongly feel the cold). Arrive early enough so you can get the ideal desk.

04.01.2022 Recitation Quiz or test yourself as you read through each paragraph or section. This promotes understanding as well as faster learning because it is a more active process than reading or listening. It also tests understanding, revealing mistakes or gaps. Recite in your own words and read difficult passages aloud.
03.01.2022 Keep Doubts Under Control Negative thoughts such as I don’t know this or OMG I’m going to fail have been shown to reduce our ability to recall information when we need it. Rather than sabotaging yourself in an exam, take a few deep breaths and ask yourself the following questions: If I did know the answer, what would I write?. What concepts & techniques are associated with these key words? You may be surprised with the outcome!
02.01.2022 The Importance of a Correct Pace Every year, hard working students don’t get the marks they’re capable of as they couldn’t complete their exams within the available time. Other students are so worried that they’ll run short on time and speed through exam papers, making avoidable mistakes or misreading questions. They finish a paper in plenty of time. but in their hurry to go over their answers two more times, they miss their mistakes again! To prevent this happening to you, sit 2 preferably 3 exam papers under examination conditions during the week before each subject exam. This will help you to determine the pace or speed at which you must work at so you can complete papers within the available time.
01.01.2022 Foolproof Remedy Against the Effects of Anxiety Studies conducted by the University of Chicago have found that when students spent 10 minutes writing about their test anxiety and fears just before a test, their scores went up by 5%. Those who didn't perform writing exercises "choked under pressure" and their test scores dropped by 12 percent, according to the study. By writing down your worries, you free your working memory and prevent distractions during the test, so give it a try and wave those bad grades goodbye!
