A popular in-clinic method uses a mask-like application of product that works to correct hyperpigmentation while regulating the overproduction of melanin in the melanocytes (the cells that produce melanin). 16.01.2022 We've heard it all when it comes to skincare - and we're sure you've heard some weird ones too. One of our favourites is that the anti-aging ingredient, Retinol, causes the skin to thin. Retinol is an ingredient that encourages the skin to turn over at a rapid rate, mimicking the behaviour of younger skin and thus giving you the appearance of younger skin (think: smooth, clear, baby skin!) The common misconception is that this ingredient thins the skin while doing so. W...here in actual fact, it thickens skin. They only thin the dead layer of horn cells (corneocytes) on the skins surface, not the living skin itself. This exfoliation of corneocytes is a good thing, not only because your skin will look less dull and lacklustre, but also because it signals to the basal cell layer of the epidermis (where all of our important skin stem cells live) to produce more lovely new cells, which means that the living epidermis actually thickens over time, making it healthier so that it appears younger. Retinol has even been shown to not only thicken the epidermis (the outer layer of our skin), but also the dermis the deeper layer, by stimulating our collagen and elastin production. Unlike an exfoliating scrub that physically sloughs layers off and eventually damages the skin barrier, retinol encourages the skin to regulate its own cell turnover and shouldnt weaken your epidermis. Just make sure you don't make the mistake of too much too soon!
