24.01.2022 GRADING So here's a good one for you to know, grading can apply to two different techniques in dressmaking! You can both grade seams, and grade a pattern. This is just to confuse you right?? Grading a seam is a technique to help eliminate bulk in a finished garment. When you are asked to grade a seam, you will trim the seam fabric that will sit against the outer garment to 6mm (1/4") and the other seam fabric to 1cm (3/8"). The seams aren't normally finished further. Gradi...ng a pattern is an advanced dressmaking technique to change the size of the entire garment. Sometimes it is also applied to changing a personal pattern to accommodate your measurements, like when you have a size 8 waist, and a size 10 hip, But I like to call that technique 'blending sizes' to save confusion. Do you have any terms you'd like explained? I'll see what I can do

12.01.2022 Mother's day can be a very weighted occasion, so I'm getting in early with a gentle reminder to be kind and empathetic on a day like tomorrow. I see you. My mother has sewn throughout much of her earlier life, it was how you got clothes at a good price back then. I remember hearing her talk to her sister, my aunt about sewing in their teen years and my aunt exclaiming "You used to always nick my patterns!" My mother laughed and said "Well mum (my grandmother) told us to save... money everywhere we could!" I can get behind that logic I can look back fondly at some of the things she made me as a child and in particular a blue hooded jumper with an applique "B" on the front. Having something made just for me in my world of hand-me-downs was very special. Not to mention a teddy she made for me. Gerald is currently unattached to his his head but I will fix him! My father's mother was also a terrific seamstress, and worked for Zara Holt (the drowned Prime Minister Harold Holt's wife) when my family first immigrated to Australia. Her friends have told of their first impressions, that she was a very smartly dressed lady (in a wardrobe of clothes she made of course!) I'm proud to have a business born from a talent that I can trace back through the women in my family like this. It helps me feel connected when I am so far away. See more
