23.01.2022 There isn’t a hierarchy of loss why compare one grief to another? That all said, most of us have a strong reaction when we hear about the death of someone’s child of any age. Something about the grief of parents and the upturned order of things. Following on from our monthly Grief Information Sessions, we had requests to run an online session for parents, their friends and families about grief following the death of a child. ... So, on Wednesday 22 July we will be discussing: - the unique challenges experienced by parents grieving the death of a child at pregnancy, at birth, in childhood or in adulthood - impacts on couple and family relationships - managing difficult questions and comments - strategies to cope in the months and years to come Please help us share the word with those who may be interested in attending. 10.01.2022 Many of us feel helpless and uncertain when supporting someone who is grieving. We worry about saying the wrong thing, doing too little, or making things worse. In response, Sydney Grief Counselling Services and I have developed this resource to offer some practical suggestions for what to do or say. If there's one thing bereaved people consistently tell me, it's how much they appreciate genuine, sensitive support. Those gestures and words that say you're still there for the...m, as the days and weeks turn into months and years. You can download this and other resources at: https://www.thesession.com.au/resources Please share this with those it could help.

04.01.2022 It's important to talk about suicide and suicide prevention. When I worked as a Forensic Counsellor in the coronial system, I learnt awfully quickly about the unseen, untold, unimaginable impacts of suicide, and the nuanced and complex stories of those who died. This is why I'm so heartened to be part of Dr. Sarah Wayland's article on suicide prevention in the current issue of MiNDFOOD. ... Suicide is difficult to talk about, but I've learnt that it can make all the difference when you do.

03.01.2022 Each one of my family and friends are accounted for. If I don’t know exactly where they are, I do at least know they are alive. I say this because this week is National Missing Persons Week, and this year I have a whole different awareness of what missing and being missed means. Earlier in the year I began counselling families connected to the Missing Persons Advocacy Network - MPAN. This charity - established by Loren O'Keeffe, whose brother Dan went missing in 2011 - is a...ll things meaningful, determined, and heart-aching. But it also gets things done: from raising awareness, to supporting families, to being that organisation that talks about humanising people, and then does it. So this week, I'll be listening to this: https://whatsmissingpodcast.com

01.01.2022 For those grieving the disappearance or death of someone they love, anniversaries and special dates are hard. Properly hard. Clients tell me the lead up to birthdays, holidays and family gatherings can fill them with dread and yet more grief. On Wednesday, 19 August at 7pm (AEST) another grief counsellor and myself will be hosting an online information session dedicated to this topic. ... We’ll discuss key ideas and challenges of special dates, as well as offer strategies to cope. As always, we finish with a live Q&A. We continue to offer these sessions at a fair price too, so please join us or share with those it could benefit.
