25.01.2022 Shady character buxus sempervirens standard peeping at you through his hot pink curtains (Malus ‘Showtime’)
25.01.2022 Spring, consider it sprung @ The Shrubbery
25.01.2022 An ode to the humble garden bench. . A static, solid support for rest and self-reflection. Unmoving in time and space, anchoring man to nature through the seasons. A vantage point from which we observe and feel the changing form, colour and weather around us, bonding our sense of being more intimately with the concept of time passing. . From this bench each morning we tune into this year’s showing of the progression of spring; which Mother Nature airs for us year after year..., apathetic to any changes in human society. . Big love to all the garden and park benches out there for keeping us grounded. Hope you’re all enjoying one this long weekend See more
24.01.2022 Suffering from travel withdrawals? Take a dose of this knock-out cherry blossom to ease the pain; our potent display will transport you temporarily through time and space to the month of April in Kyoto. The Shrubbery’s Sakura celebration features a stand of Prunus subhirtella pendula rubra tall standards combined with Euryops, Magnolia x loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’ and fiery red Ranunculus in a borderline-obnoxiously bright colour combination that’s hot enough to make any good geisha girl blush.

22.01.2022 Climbing rose devouring a potting shed, is there any garden cameo more nostalgically heart-warning?
22.01.2022 Yesterday evening’s sunset, Merry Christmas Everyone
22.01.2022 SPRING SHOWDOWNS . Prizefighter perennials go pound for pound in the potager, attempting to assert dominance over their peers and emerge as champion of the raised bed. . In the red corner: Teucrium hiranicum ‘Purple Tails’. This trailing terror with towering floral displays has a history of invading and conquering garden beds. Turn your back on it for too long and you’ll even be pulling it out of your bathtub, a fierce competitor indeed.... . In the blue corner: Erigeron karvinskianus, don’t be fooled by its common name of seaside daisy - this creeping combatant is anything but a delicate little flower. Fighting fit through drought, searing heat and frosts; this evergreen contender is such a tough invader some areas even consider it a weed . Which of these heavyweights will prevail? . Neither of course, as this unbiased referee will step in when needed to protect the nearby pretty pacifist - curly parsley See more
21.01.2022 Weird and wonderful from every angle, Verbascum ‘Polar Summer’. Biennials: Worth. The. Wait.

20.01.2022 The Shrubbery Spring Sale is here! 20-50% off all stock - running until the end of September every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday from 10-4. . Shake off that winter comfort wear, squeeze back into those gardening shorts and spring yourself into action! The temperature is warmer, the land’s thirst quenched and there couldn’t be a better time to get out in the garden. What are you waiting for?
18.01.2022 Today was the first day of intense heat, and though some of the hydrangeas and humans at The Shrubbery may have been wilting, these Dry Garden performers were soaking up that sizzling summer sun like an oblivious sunbather in the sixties: Helichrysum italicum, Tagetes lemmonii, Rosa ‘Sunny Knockout’ and Magnolia grandiflora ‘Greenback’
16.01.2022 The dusty, dulcet tones of White French lavender (Lavandula dentata ‘Pure Harmony’) keying in with today’s drifts of grey skies. Effortlessly chic, maintaining that air of extrinsic aloofness despite being inwardly petrified at the prospect of rain ruining its hairdo.
15.01.2022 Potager perfection
15.01.2022 Perspectives. Exceptional residential landscape design anchors structure to earth. It achieves this not only by accenting and melding the exterior with the land, but also - perhaps most importantly - by enabling scenery and nature to bleed inside the walls of a building. Considering aspect from inside a home is paramount in designing gardens. The environment around us holds more beauty than we can every truly appreciate, so every window should be a picture; allowing us to drink as much of it in as we possibly can. Because we should all be looking outwards and upwards, not inwards.
14.01.2022 Afternoon amble along the garden path
14.01.2022 First impressions matter; therefore when designing a front entrance, the main consideration should be how to make it a true and endearing reflection of character. . Pictured is the corner apex of The Shrubbery’s sloping setback driveway entrance. The steel-edged garden features a double hedge of Thuja plicata ‘Fastigiata’ and Buxus sempervirens with a focal evergreen tree (Magnolia grandiflora ‘Teddy Bear’) - their clean lines and contrasting textures suggest that a tasteful..., debonair individual with an appreciation for style resides within; while the wedding day rose displaying a fervent burst of white hints at a slightly wilder side - an impassioned yet controlled nature. . And the fact that two hedges, a tree and a rambling rose are all located within a metre radius informs anyone with experience of maintaining a garden that whoever lives within is, quite clearly, clinically insane. 14.01.2022 The Cherry Tree Chorus continues to sing loudest and sweetest in The Shrubbery Gardens; their synchronised voices reverberating off the pine tree walls and lake surface floor of the natural amphitheatre they perform in. Stage tech Mother Nature’s organic lighting - sun rays intermittently piercing through grey skies - only elevates their outstanding performance even further. The perfect pink spring symphony
11.01.2022 I know it’s an aspect I’ve been posting a bit of recently (and have been doing a lot of posting in general); but some sunsets are too good not to share. Taken from out on the al fresco for anyone concerned that I’m playing on the roof again
11.01.2022 Bluer than the sky itself; late afternoon sun catching the first of the Delphiniums to come out, somehow still standing after today’s relentless wind
09.01.2022 The first working week of the new year has kicked off with a magnificent, mirthful Monday. A week of full-time weeding in the rain leading up to today has rewarded us with picture-perfect perennial portraits this evening, lovingly illuminated by the afternoon sun. . As I write this post, my phone typing thrusting thistle-thorns ever deeper into my thumbs, these cottage garden scenes rouse tears of both joy and pain from my weary eyes
09.01.2022 Gimme some of that sweet sunspot
08.01.2022 The Shrubbery’s Spring Sale continues for this week only, ending Saturday October 3rd: 20% off all stock and 50% off selected lines. Time to get planting! We’re open from 10-4 Wednesday, Thursday Friday & Saturday
06.01.2022 Upper formal lawn - whites, greys and yellows intermingling, rambling and cascading over the harsh edges of sandstone boulders. . A considered, borderline anal-retentive plant selection in regards to colour scheme (Rosa ‘Litte Wonder, Santolina chamaecyparissus, Achillea ‘Coronation Gold’ & Helichrysum petiolaris) that all clash together in such a wildly unkempt fashion. . A true epitome of a designer’s garden: control over colour/texture combination but no control over the way these plants will interact, which in this case has, thankfully, resulted in a beautiful cacophony of sprawling, tasteful madness
04.01.2022 Green + White . Tasteful, timeless and perennially on trend
04.01.2022 Juxtaposition. . The soft pastel palette of pale pink and white elevated from pretty to striking by the deep tones of midnight blue pansies, captured in the early morning light
04.01.2022 Ruff day at the office...
04.01.2022 I never meant to cause you any trouble, I never meant to cause you any pain. I only wanted one time to see you laughing, I only wanted to see you in the purple rain Current Prince of the garden: Allium ‘Purple Rain’ looking as just flamboyant as the artist formerly known as himself, and giving just as a big a performance as he did, but within in its very own arena - The Maple Garden Border.

01.01.2022 22/11/20 - The Shrubbery Lakeside Gardens installation. Designed as a layered meadow garden, with waves of mass planted prairie perennials, grasses and roses running in lines that mimic the curves of the meandering pathway and the undulating fall of the land. Plants installed, in no particular order, include Euphorbia, Lavandula, Sanguisorba, Aster, Symphiotrichum, Rudbeckia, Helenium, Persicaria, Panicum, Drepanostachyum, Centranthus, Anthriscus. . Can’t wait to see this space develop; big love and appreciation to @col_blanche for the design and installation collaboration and to resident Shrubbery Landscaper @joelthomas080 for the beautiful pathway he cut his teeth paving
