21.01.2022 ** Review ** It is always such a joy to be invited back to help families with their newest bubbas!! At 4 months old this beautiful doll just need a couple of tweaks to her awake times and feeds and the rest is history! #nosleeptrainingatthisage Bec is AMAZING!!!!... Our 4 month old was waking for a feed 8+ times overnight and naps were all over the place. In a matter of days she was waking for 1 night feed and linking her sleep cycles during the day. Bec has literally changed our lives and we a so grateful! She is relaxed, friendly and goes about her work without judgement. 09.01.2022 TOP 10 BABY SLEEP MYTHS #10: Your baby *should* be sleeping through the night by 6 months Spoiler Alert There is no set age for which a baby **should** be sleeping through the night.... There is no reason to put unreasonable pressure on yourself to have a baby that turns a certain age and then starts sleeping through the night. It is a personal decision for families to make. Some parents are lucky enough to have the unicorn baby that sleeps through the night and every night from the day they were born. Some families are happy to continue feeding their child overnight well into their toddler years. However, IF your child is waking multiple times overnight and you are feeling lost, frustrated, anxious, exhausted and/or defeated with your baby’s sleep then its time to reach out and get some help. Your baby wants to sleep. Trust me. More often than not, sleep can be improved just by tweaking some simple things like nap timings, sleep environment, milk feeds, bedtime routines nap and offering certain types of food at certain times of the day. Using a sleep consultant who works holistically means they are always trying to find the underlying cause for why baby is experiencing sleep challenges. They should be creating solutions based on your child’s personality and temperament along with your parenting style. 07.01.2022 TOP 10 BABY SLEEP MYTHS #8: Go with your baby’s tired signs for naps and bedtime Ever heard of the term Happy Wakers? These babies are able to hang out and shoot the breeze for hours at a time without cracking so much as a yawn. Not all babies give reliable tell-tale signs that they are ready for bed. Some will rub their eyes grizzle when they get a little bored but this can easily be mistaken for tiredness. Watching the clock can be a far more effective way to get baby dow...n at the right time, even when they are not exhibiting the signs. There is what I like to call a sweet spot for naps and bedtime where baby is awake for just enough time to feel tired and ready for bed. They accept sleep easily and have enough sleep pressure to enjoy a full sleep cycle or even happily link them together. Either side of the sweet spot is: Under-tired: Baby is dipping in enthusiasm, maybe yawning but will happily go on playing if given the opportunity. If put to bed under-tired they might protest, chatter, roll around, play and be quite wakeful and/or cry until they reach their sweet spot when they are ready to fall asleep. Over-tired: Baby looked tired a few minutes ago but now that you’ve cleaned down the high chair and popped away some toys they are looking bright eyed and appear to have a ‘second wind’. If put to bed at this point you will find they need a lot of help and a lot of convincing due to the elevated levels of cortisol. There could be protesting, tears and once they finally fall asleep, they pop awake minutes later. Having an idea of your baby’s age appropriate awake time will allow you to blend watching tired signs AND the clock. 05.01.2022 TOP 10 BABY SLEEP MYTHS #7. My child is an early riser and there is nothing I can do about it I can guarantee you that I’ve never met ANY parent that is delighted to start their day at 5am (or earlier for some unlucky families!!). Many parents find their little ones bright eyed and bushy tailed at this time and with the sun coming up it can feel like an uphill and pointless battle attempting to get their child back to sleep. Perhaps you give it a good crack and yield success ...only to have them spring back awake as soon as their head hits the mattress again! Early rising is a challenge. But it CAN be RESOLVED. If you are aiming for your baby to have 11-12hrs of sleep (including feeds) then a baby that has a bedtime of 6pm is realistically going to wake and want to start their day somewhere between 5-6am. In this instance baby isn’t actually early rising, they have really just completed their hours for the night However, If your baby went to bed at 7pm and woke at 5am then this *would* be considered early rising. There isn’t a lot of sleep drive left at 5-5.30am and its super common for babies to want to wake at this point because sleep is so fragile but its worthwhile persevering with a resettle because you can absolutely encourage your child to go back to sleep and wake a little later! First you MUST ENSURE baby/toddler is warm enough. Between 3-5am is the coldest part of the night so babies will be super restless and inconsolable if they are cold. Double check the room is super dark so that no light is filtering through and causing baby to wake thinking its daytime. Keep your interaction very VERY boring and minimal otherwise it will stimulate baby even more. Use white/brown noise to block out the unwanted noise of birds & cars Above all, remember that encouraging a later wake in the morning is going to take time, persistence and consistency. If you have always cut your losses and got baby up at 5am then their internal body clock is now set to start their day at this time so delaying getting them up will help to set their new day/night rhythm and over the course of a few weeks and a consistent new up time you’ll find baby starts waking later

03.01.2022 TOP 10 BABY SLEEP MYTHS #6: Baby should sleep in a quiet room I think all new parents can relate to turning down the television to a barely audible whisper and avoiding turning the kettle on when baby has just gone down. We tip-toe through hallways and pray to the sleep gods that the courier doesn’t knock on the door as we are inching a freshly conked-out cherub into their bassinet! The idea that baby should sleep in a quiet room is one myth we can BUST with confidence!... It is almost as loud as a lawn mower 24/7 in utero. That’s loud! Once our little ones are earthside there are elements of life inside the womb that we want to recreate. Swaddling helps to provide the comfort likened to a small, confined space and reduces the startle reflex. Adding white noise into your baby’s room is one of the easiest and most effective ways to help your baby sleep well. White noise (although I personally promote BROWN noise as a waaayy better option) reminds them of their time inside and helps to switch on the calming reflex. When babies notice the noise on it reduces their stimulation levels, allows them to concentrate and relax. White noise becomes a positive sleep association as baby falls asleep with it on and when they transition through sleep cycles the sound remains, helping to block out unwanted noise (such as neighbours, garbage trucks and siblings fighting) and allowing them to move into their next sleep phase more easily.
