On bonding cases, I always initially do a ‘mock-up’ so the patient can take photos and take time to decide whether they will like these changes. ... We all know that we need to avoid sugar and brush and floss to get rid of bacteria and leftover food, but did you know that this actually isn’t enough? The pH or acidity levels in your mouth play a massive role. TEETH HATE ACID! To ensure a neutral and stable pH level (around 7) in your mouth: ... Limit acidic drinks like juice, wine, beer and carbonated drinks (even soda water!) and try to drink them along with a meal. Drink plenty of tap water (some plain bottled waters are actually acidic ) Put milk in your tea & coffee (even herbal teas are acidic) If you have reflux/GORD ensure this is properly diagnosed and medicated (infants too) Smoking, drugs and medications can affect saliva quality and quantity, therefore affect pH. If you do expose the mouth to acid in any of the above ways, DONT brush straight away as it will strip off the enamel. Rinse with water or sip/swish some plain milk and wait an hour to brush.
