19.01.2022 Lack of equipment and unreliable internet access meant it was half way through last year's covid shutdown before Courtney Lardner's children were able to do their online school work at home. The digital divide is the next frontier of inequality in education according to Wendy Field, Head of Policy and Programs at The Smith Family. If it’s unaddressed, it could really impact ongoing educational outcomes for disadvantaged kids." We hear many stories of families going to the s...chool car park or McDonald’s to download homework. [Families are] out of the loop in communications with schools; the impact of not being connected is huge." 12.01.2022 "I came away from this production with a clear understanding between poverty and our performance as a nation. The coronavirus has shown us that none of us can feel safe until we are all safe. It’s the same with education. Our future economic security depends on investing in every individual’s potential." Adam Shand, host of the #BreakingPoverty podcast. Read more at https://bit.ly/37AqNgb

09.01.2022 I’ve loved the fact that it’s so personal. You do have this sort of personal connection with that child. I like that. You feel like you’re watching this child grow up and develop. Mary, Child Sponsor since 2016 Our sponsors tell us how much they enjoy sponsoring a child in Australia. For many, it's the satisfaction of knowing they're making a real difference to their everyday life. While for others we hear that over time they get to know their sponsored child. Gradually th...ey learn more about what the child enjoys at school, their hobbies and maybe even what they want to be when they grow up. Reading a child's profile each year sponsors can see handwriting and spelling improve together with the child's confidence. For $52 a month, your sponsorship, combined with that of another sponsor, will provide a child with essentials such as books, stationery and data, as well as access to our out-of-school learning and mentoring programs. All our sponsors help a child in need make the most of their education and give them a chance to create a better future for themselves. Become a child sponsor today. https://bit.ly/3d8SHDs

08.01.2022 Aiden struggled with reading when he was younger which shook his confidence. He was sponsored by The Smith Family in primary school, giving him access to our reading buddy program, student2student. His buddy believed in him, which made him believe in himself. Now Aiden wants to become a mentor, with the dream of opening an Indigenous culinary school for young people, so they feel supported too. 07.01.2022 Please don’t make me go back to school. Billy, aged 9. Until two years ago Billy and his dad, Jake, lived comfortably. Billy had plenty of friends and was doing well at school. Then Jake, a sole parent, was diagnosed with cancer, and since then he has barely been able to work. Now, they are struggling to make ends meet. They also lost their house late last year and had to relocate to a more affordable area. Billy was forced to move to a new school where everything is differ...ent. Changing schools has severely affected Billy’s learning and he has fallen even further behind his classmates. He doesn’t fit in at his new school and thinks he never will. Feeling isolated only adds to the anxiety Billy feels about his dad’s illness and his struggle to keep up at school. He’s trying his best, but his grades keep getting worse. Children like Billy are experiencing poverty through no fault of their own. The impact on their education, their confidence, and their prospects for the future is likely to be devastating. Unless he gets the help he needs right now, Billy may disengage in his education and miss his opportunity to gain the skills to break the cycle of poverty and take back control of his future. Through The Smith Family, you can sponsor a child like Billy and make sure they have the school essentials and extra learning support they need to thrive at school and beyond. Please sponsor a child today and change a life. http://bit.ly/3tcHojf See more
