23.01.2022 A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR KERRY VINCENT Hello Everyone, I know there are many of you are eagerly awaiting 3.00pm this afternoon when a whole range of the Government’...s restrictions are further eased. Well done everybody for doing the right thing and helping to bring forward the easing of restrictions. It’s very welcome to see. We talk about what the new normal may look like, or how different the world will be now, but we must remember we have the same family, neighbours, friends and community that we’ve always had. Nothing’s really changed. We just need to understand that we need to make some adjustments to our lives and the way we live. We all need to reflect on, and appreciate all the good things we have in our lives. You’ve only got to turn on the news at the moment to see the turmoil and issues in other parts of the world. We really are very lucky to be living in this amazing state. The easing of restrictions now means: - Tasmanians can travel anywhere in the state and visit national parks. - Gatherings increase to 20 people at a time for indoor and outdoor, cinemas, museums, galleries, theatres, performance venues, historic sites, religious gatherings and weddings. - Restaurants/cafes/pubs including seated drinking will increase to 40 patrons. - Funerals up to 50 people. - Accommodation, unlimited. - Camping, overnight boating and shacks open with up to 20 people. - Open homes and auctions can resume with 20 people. - Gyms and boot camps for up to 20 people. - Beauty services (including tattoo, nails, waxing, facials and tanning and massage) for up to 20 people. - Day spas to reopen - Park exercise equipment and playgrounds open for up to 20 people. I know many of you will be flocking to your shacks and the open water this long weekend. It also means our Southern Beaches area in particular will swell with shackies coming to stay. Please makes sure you do the right thing and continue to follow social distancing protocols and practice good hand hygiene. We don’t want to become complacent and undo all our good work to date. There was COVID-19 mobile testing in Dunalley and Sorell in the past week. They were both well organised and patronised. Thank you to everyone who took the time to be tested. Don’t forget to download the Australian Government’s COVIDSafe app. It will help keep you, your family and your friends safe. It’s been pleasing to see no new cases in Tasmania have been recorded for 20 days now. Keep up the good work. Stay safe, stay positive and stay respectful this long weekend. Mayor Kerry Vincent

22.01.2022 Road users are advised to expect delays of up to 20 minutes on Tasman Highway at Midway Point on the next two Sundays, due to the relocation of power poles. TasNetworks will be relocating the poles as part of preparation works to allow for construction of the Midway Point Intersection Solution. The work, which will require reduced speed limits and lane closures on the highway, will take place at the following times and locations: 7:30 am 5:00 pm Sunday, 25 October... near Fenton Street and Southern Drive 7:30 am 5:00 pm Sunday, 1 November near the Midway Point roundabout The work has been scheduled to minimise disruption to commuter traffic. The speed limit on the Tasman Highway will be reduced to 40 km/hr, starting at the approach to McGees Bridge (when travelling from Sorell), and at approach to the western causeway (when coming from Hobart). Traffic controllers will use a stop/go system to manage alternating traffic flow through a single travel lane at all times during nominated work hours. At 10:30 am and 1:30 pm on each Sunday there will be complete closures of both lanes for about 6 minutes each time. Road users are advised to plan ahead and pay attention to traffic controls, and take alternative routes where possible. See more

15.01.2022 Fire at Station Lane Sorell At around 4:10am today (Saturday), emergency services responded to a report of a structure fire at a block of businesses in Station Lane, Sorell. As a result of the fire two businesses appear to have suffered fire, smoke and water damage. Two units at the rear of the building are unaffected, Sergeant Adrian Mollon said.... Investigations will progress throughout the day. Initial investigations indicate that the fire started behind several electrical appliances in one of the businesses, with the fire spreading into the ceiling cavity, he said. The prompt response from local TFS brigades prevented further damage to the structure. If anyone has any information regarding this incident, they are asked to call police on 131444, or via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Reports to Crime Stoppers can be made anonymously.
15.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS - Minister Ferguson announces Govt to seal Wielangta Road The Government intends to get Wielangta Road sealed. While our priority right now i...s keeping it upgraded for continued local access, after we have reopened the Tasman Highway, I will have the Department assess the cost of sealing, and to then secure funds in partnership with the other road owners and begin the job. The Tasmanian Government will undertake further work to resolve the Wielangta Road ownership issues and explore the feasibility and estimated cost of a staged upgrade and sealing of the road. We will also work to secure any additional funding required to undertake these works. I have made it clear that the road has proven its importance as an ongoing access route for the East Coast and that’s been communicated widely.
15.01.2022 Police are seeking public information in relation to a rock thrown through the window of an Redline Bus in-service in Dodges Ferry last night. Around 6.55pm a large rock was thrown through the window of a bus travelling on Carlton Beach Road which had community members on board. Thankfully no one was injured but there was a very real potential for commuters and motorists to have been seriously injured, said Acting Inspector Duffey. These types of incidents cause significant distress to the community and I urge anyone with information to come forward. Anyone with information in relation to the rock throwing, or suspicious activity in the vicinity of Tarana Street or Arnott Street is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.

13.01.2022 Breaking news The Tasman Highway at Paradise Gorge will be blocked until at least mid-July another five weeks away. As a result Orford and much of the East Coast will be left isolated with traffic having to detour either by Lake Leake Highway or Wielangta Road. The news announced this afternoon will impact the economy and community. Originally slated as a two week closure to remove dangerous boulders, then the timeframe was stretched to four weeks and more recently referred... to as just ``weeks’’, State Infrastructure Minister Michael Ferguson said the closure would be in place until mid-July. This means the Highway will be out of action for seven or eight weeks in total. Mr Ferguson said hundreds of tonnes of rock had been removed, but more was needed. ``I’m disappointed but this is a realistic timeframe,’’ Mr Ferguson said. See more

12.01.2022 We are working every day during the current wet weather to keep Wielangta Road useable while the Tasman Highway at Paradise Gorge is closed for rock removal. Th...e road is subject to frequent grading and rolling to keep it useable and it is important that road users drive with caution and stay within the posted speed limits. The road is open to both four-wheel-drive and two-wheel-drive traffic; however, the public is reminded it is a gravel road currently experiencing increased traffic. Driving with extra care helps keep everyone safe. While Wielangta Road remains open for use, the public is encouraged to use Lake Leake Road, which provides a safer and easier journey. Both alternative routes continue to be monitored, with any issues logged for quick repair. The rock removal teams continue to work whenever weather conditions allow. Their safety remains top priority. Some allowance was made for the forecast bad weather in estimating the time required to complete the remaining rock removal and reopening the road in mid-July. We thank everyone for your patience and understanding as this important safety work proceeds. We will continue to keep you updated on progress of the work. Video: Our crews working to bring down more rocks during the week.
