25.01.2022 NOW SPINNING: Pulp Fiction Original Soundtrack LP by Various Artists Featuring a truly eclectic mixture of music, the Pulp Fiction soundtrack album eschews a more conventional score for rock 'n' roll, bubblegum pop, surf sounds and soul, all interspersed with snippets of dialogue from the movie, an approach Tarantino had utilised on his previous movie OST, Reservoir Dogs. The choice of material goes some way to reveal Quentin Tarantinos obsession with pop culture, and accord...ing Rolling Stone, it's fitting that his films deploy pop music expertly. Reaching 21 on the US chart, the soundtrack managed to resurrect many long forgotten gems, from Dick Dales opening salvo of Misirlou through to Surf Rider by The Lively Ones. The band's 4th album is about lead singer, Dave Hosking's (vocals/guitar) own personal experience with being really sick, for a really long time with chronic dysbiosis. Lyrically the record is about this experience and positive sentiments and lessons that have come from the challenge. At its heart, the album is about the power of our own minds. Our ability to compartmentalise as well as escape when we need to. The album title is a fitting metaphor for hope and sums up the theme of the record really well. The idea also stems from a Leonard Cohen lyrics "it is through the cracks where the light gets in." (Sale until midnight 24 September)

Paul Dempsey's 2009 album was re-released in 2019 during Australian Music Month on coloured vinyl for its 10 Year Anniversary Edition! Dempsey and the album were nominated for three ARIA Awards in 2009 - Best Male Artist, Best Adult Contemporary Album and Producer of the Year. The album won Triple J Award for Best Australian Album of 2009, was named iTunes Album of the Year for 2009 and was also named as one of the Best Albums of 2009 by Rolling Stone magazine. Everything Is True was essentially recorded by just two people in a makeshift home studio: Dempsey and co-producer, engineer and "Devil's advocate" Wayne Connolly (Youth Group, Josh Pyke, You Am I) took over a pair of small bungalows at MacMaster's Beach, an hour north of Sydney on NSW's Central Coast, for a month at the start of 2009. The album introduced us to a new palette from Dempseys records with Something For Kate, where a tender voice and expressive acoustic guitar supplemented airy rhythms, the expert punctuation of an electric guitar and gently immersive keyboards. This is music where light filters through the gaps, uplifting and eminently melodic.
