19.01.2022 Want to know the common mistakes popping up in job advertisements? Here are some and the number of times it's included on ads on a popular platform: Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted: 2186 Previous applicants need not apply: 292 Exciting career opportunity: 176... Highly motivated: 3788 Experienced and enthusiastic: 233 Experienced: 37182 Stunning: 703 Fantastic Opportunity: 2928 Writing job advertisements is not an easy task. I’ve learnt the hard way that hastily written, poorly worded, no WIIFM adverts are a waste of time and money. They often begin with the lines Fantastic/Amazing opportunity exists for a highly motivated and experienced [insert role type here] to join a fantastic/amazing company with stunning new offices in the CBD. They then go on to list a slew of requirements and responsibilities, and a few benefits (like free fruit, working from home arrangements, collaborative culture if any are listed at all.) I don’t know about you, but I’m not exactly enticed to apply for this job, particularly if I’m not fully active in my job search. Want to know what great ads look like? They include a value proposition for employees. They say why people apply and work there. They often include videos that show real people, in real offices (that gets my buy in quickly). They use words like you, yours, us, we. They don’t throw around words like fantastic and amazing without suggesting why the role would be fantastic and amazing. And we now know that working from home is not just something that gets dangled in front of people until they earn it or show they can be trusted. Whilst I think it’s still a benefit, I bet that a lot of people are going to expect it as part of a new working culture that has been bred out of Covid-19. No matter what the climate or the candidate market, ensuring a great candidate customer experience from the very onset should be a priority. Weave your brand identity into every interaction you have with stakeholders, especially with job ads. And please, please, please, stop saying only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. It’s 2020 you can even automate it! Follow The Sourcely for more top tips on attracting talent to your business!

06.01.2022 We'll be sharing some common findings on our job advertisement project tomorrow, but here's one of my favourite faux pas: "We regret to inform applicants that only shortlisted candidates will be notified". Does that make you want to apply for that job, let alone work at that company? #jobadvert #startuptips #hiringtips
