23.01.2022 New blog post up on the website! This month we focus on hearing and how this can impact on speech and language development. http://www.thespeechhub.com.au//2017/05/15/Ear-Infections-1

23.01.2022 Where is the Green Sheep? This is a great book that supports understanding of concepts such as up/down, near/far and emotions such as scared/brave. The repetition throughout the story combined with the simple bright pictures makes this a great book for kids. You can also buy this book at Kmart in a pack which includes your very own soft green wooly sheep. You can use this to extend the childs language skills even further by taking turns hiding the sheep and having a go of telling each other WHERE you found the sheep and practise location words (e.g under the table, on the chair, next to the couch). Happy book sharing

23.01.2022 Constructive Play Constructive play means using objects in a goal orientated manner, in other words the child is using the object with a plan in mind. An excellent source of constructive play is play dough. A child can use play dough to make an endless amount of options including making a cake, a car or even a person. Play dough has known benefits for fine motor skills (it strengthens the childs little hands through the actions of rolling, pulling and squishing the play ...dough). It can also provide children with a sense of accomplishment (for what they have made). But what are some of the language benefits? Play dough helps build the childs vocabulary especially through the use of descriptive words that may initially be unfamiliar to the child. For example talking about the soft, squishy, cold play dough whilst your child is experiencing that texture will help the child learn and later use these words Play dough provides a great opportunity to model lots of verbs/action words which children need to build small sentences. These words may include cut, push, roll, make, pull. Play dough is a great play activity all year round as in summer you can pull the kids table outside and when its raining its a good indoor activity So given our current weather here in Perth its a flexible activity See more

21.01.2022 Gestures are a really important part of a childs communication development. We often get so caught up in waiting for our child to talk that we can forget to notice and celebrate all of the milestones the child makes in the development of their gestures. Some of the early gestures that a child develops include blowing a kiss, pointing, clapping hands and shaking their head. These gestures get the child ready to talk and it helps them communicate their message to you (eg clapping their hands to show excitement or shaking their head to show you they dont want something ) The First Words Project has released 16 by 16 (16 gestures by 16 months) which is a great resource to check out

19.01.2022 This week is the inaugural Infant Mental Health Awareness Week in Australia! The Australian Association for Infant Mental Health (AAIMHI) has shared "Letter From Your Baby" written by Andrew Roberts. 17.01.2022 I love this story! Engaging in reading is such a great way for children to develop their vocabulary knowledge, comprehension and literacy skills. This is such a great initiative and one that I think would particularly benefit those children who are building their confidence with reading http://abcnews.go.com//kids-practice-reading-shy-sh/story

16.01.2022 An interesting read on screen time and the impact on speech and language development. Mobile devices are everywhere! So how do you manage screen time in your household?

15.01.2022 Functional play! Functional play is when the child plays with a toy according to its intended function (e.g stacking blocks, pushing a car). Puzzles are a great functional play activity. Puzzles help develop hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, problem solving skills and LANGUAGE. How can puzzles support language development? They can support the understanding (and later use) of verbs if you model the verb as your child is engaging in the action (e.g push, put, turn).... They can support vocabulary development especially if the child may not see these items in their daily world (e.g elephant, monkey) They can support the childs concept development if the child hears the word as they are performing that action (e.g in/on, out, off) Simple puzzles allow for plenty of repetition of the types of words/concepts mentioned above which children need in order to learn language. 15.01.2022 This week it's NAIDOC week with the theme "Our Languages Matter". I was lucky enough to have the experience of working up in Broome and surrounding remote communities for 18 months, regularly travelling this pindan covered road and being exposed to many Indigenous languages. I loved the whole experience of working up north and meeting such great people. It also really does make you realise how lucky we are to have access to so many health services (right at our fingertips) here in Perth.

13.01.2022 It is never too early to read to your child Have a read of this article which highlights some of the many benefits. What books do you enjoy sharing with your child?

10.01.2022 Play! Now I know there are many viewpoints on the classic Barbie however I really love the message they are spreading on not only the importance of play but also the importance of parents being involved in play! Play is such an important way to support your childs development. Some of the benefits of pretend play include exposing the child to new vocabulary and supporting the childs ability to understand another persons perspective. What do you enjoy playing with your child? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PGPbKS8XUMY

08.01.2022 Have you been looking at accessing Speech Pathology for your child? Some private clinicians will offer clinic based sessions, home based sessions or a combination of both. Have a read of our latest blog post on our website for why The Speech Hub offers home based sessions.

06.01.2022 Happy WA Day Congratulations Dr James Fitzpatrick for being a finalist in the Western Australian of the Year 2017. Dr Fitzpatrick has had a huge role in the research and prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and has completed projects in remote communities in the Kimberley. The kind of work done by Dr Fitzpatrick and his team does wonders for the outcomes of those children affected by FASD.

06.01.2022 With this cold weather it can mean a lot more time spent indoors Over the month of July we will be posting play ideas and toys that you can do (and play) at home with your child that will help stimulate your childs language development. Look out for our first toy/activity idea later this week

04.01.2022 What do you think is the most important thing to help your child get the best start? Watch this great video from First 5 Forever to find out to see if you got the answer right! I think I could keep watching this video on repeat #perthkids #speechtherapy #talking #perthtoddlers #perthbabies

03.01.2022 Look out for our new flyers You can find them wherever you find good local coffee

03.01.2022 Cooking Language isnt all about colours and numbers. Children need to be exposed to a broad range of vocabulary and cooking is just one way in which you can do this. Whilst making these teddy cars we modelled location words (on, in, next to); describing words (sticky, yummy, big, small); action words (push, drive, fall) and naming words (teddy, lion). Perfect activity for this rainy day #speechtherapyperth #speechtherapy #language #children #toddlers #perthkids
