24.01.2022 When Josephine Rowe heard her book Here Until August had been shortlisted for the #2020StellaPrize her response was: What company! To be considered within a lineage of such incredible writers is an honour. (Also, I do not envy the judges having to whittle it down to sixor to twelve, for that matter. Its been a tremendous year for Australian literature, across forms.) 22.01.2022 The original Greek word for apocalypse apokalypsis does not mean end times. It means to unveil. This is the apocalypse we are living through: a process of unveiling and revealing. Patriarchy is not inevitable. It is not sustainable. If we are to survive and thrive as a species, we must first reveal it, and then undo it: in our systems, and in ourselves. Winner of the #2020StellaPrize, Jess Hill, responds to the challenges of 2020 in ‘Fire, Flood and Plague,’ a forthcoming anthology edited by Sophie Cunningham.

20.01.2022 When Jess Hill learned her book See What You Made Me Do' had been shortlisted for the #2020StellaPrize she said: How is this even happening?! Just blown away, I think. Then I had a short-lived daydream about how magnificent it would be to win not just for the obvious reasons, but because it would introduce this book to a whole new audience at a time when people are really seeking answers on domestic abuse. 10.01.2022 We are delighted to announce Jess Hills investigative work of nonfiction See What You Made Me Do as the 2020 Stella Prize winner. A call to action that cannot be ignored, See What You Made Me Do is a groundbreaking investigation of domestic abuse, written by one of the countrys finest journalists. Chair of the Stella Judging panel Lou Swinn says, Jess Hill is a journalist whose clarity of expression and thought are of the highest order . using forensic investigation, and ...highlighting personal stories, this book does much more than draw attention to this crisis it offers solutions for reform. On winning the 2020 Stella Prize, Jess Hill says: To be honoured by a prize that operates with the highest integrity is such a thrill. I feel like Ive been initiated into a circle of writers at the height of their craft, and for that I am just so grateful. My hope is that the Stella Prize will get more international publishers interested, and that people who never thought theyd read a book about domestic abuse will be persuaded to pick it up. To these future readers, I want to say: you wont regret it. This book has taught me so much about life, love and power it is not a book about other people, it is a book about all of us, and the world we live in. To all the victim-survivors out there, I hope you feel that this is a win for you, too. I couldnt have written the book without your expertise and courage." Executive Director of Stella, Jaclyn Booton says: Im awed by the rigour, humanity, and clarity Jess brings to the project and wholeheartedly congratulate her on winning the 2020 Stella Prize with this landmark book. Stella thanks our Award Partner, The Wilson Foundation for their dedication to Australian womens writing, and is proud to have presented tonights online announcement in partnership with The Wheeler Centre and GuardianLive!
09.01.2022 Congratulations to Aneta Peretko who has won our #FeministBookWeek competition! Aneta recommended their top 3 feminist lockdown reads, and has won the 2020 The ...Stella Prize longlist as the prize. Aneta - the prize is coming your way! Everyone else, check out Aneta's recommendations: 1. We Set the Dark On Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia I love that this is a young adult fantasy book, because this moment in history begs us to delve into escapist literature, but also makes those powerful female, racially diverse and queer characters a reality for teens on the cusp of adulthood. 2. Talkin’ Up to the White Woman by Aileen Moreton-Robinson I picked up the 20th anniversary edition of this classic, which is so relevant today in the context of the racial discourse happening around the world and the way Indigenous women are fighting for their space in that. 3. Fixed It by Jane Gilmore I have felt a compulsive need to read the news more than ever during this horrible year, which in turn has made me consume more and more blatantly sexist reporting. This easy but punchy read made me able to identify and therefore resist the overwhelming narrative of trivialising men’s violence against women in daily reporting. Thank you to everyone to participated in the competition, and in our first ever #FeministBookWeek. We're excited to bring you FBW again next year!

06.01.2022 It's #FeministBookWeek (our collaboration with The Stella Prize), and today we're excited to share #feminist book recommendations from author Mirandi Riwoe! 1. ...The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood I think it can be telling what feminists give their own daughters to read. My mum, a keen feminist, gave me Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale to read when it first came out in the 1980s. I have given a copy of this book to each of my daughters. I think this novel, at the very least, is a cautionary tale, reminding us to be alert to how there will always be feminist work to do. 2. Growing up with Feminist Books As a Eurasian teenager, I found Mum’s copy of The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston especially interesting, with its connotations of Asia and strong women. I think, as a feminist, it’s interesting to read, not only contemporary feminist thought, but also some of the foundational texts: from Mary Wollstonecraft to the history of suffragettes, as well as work by second-wave feminists and those who followed. 3. The works of Emily Maguire While working on my PhD I came across work by Emily Maguire. Princesses and Pornstars (Your Skirt’s Too Short: Sex, Power, Choice, the revised young adult edition) is a passionate book about the need to continue pursuing the original goals of feminism, with a keen eye on the pressures on women to conform to a ‘beauty culture’. Read Mirandi's full recommendations on our blog: https://www.ywca.org.au//feministbookweek-whats-on-joey-b/ Learn more about #FeministBookWeek, register for our webinar with Jess Hill and Zoya Patel, and enter our competition to win the 2020 Stella Longlist: https://www.ywca.org.au/news/feministbookweek/ --- More about Mirandi Riwoe - she is the author of the novel Stone Sky Gold Mountain (https://www.uqp.com.au/books/stone-sky-gold-mountain), and the novella The Fish Girl, which won Seizure’s Viva la Novella V and was shortlisted for the Stella Prize and the Queensland Literary Award’s UQ Fiction Prize. Her work has appeared in Best Australian Stories, Meanjin, Review of Australian Fiction, Griffith Review and Best Summer Stories. Mirandi has a PhD in Creative Writing and Literary Studies and lives in Brisbane.
