22.01.2022 #MondayMilestone - I just hit 10 episodes on We Rebranded! - the Instagram Live show where I speak to business owners who've rebranded, refreshed or revived their business brand. Some business owners changed up their websites, others developed a new suite of services. But the thing they all have in common? A renewed passion for their business - and a laser-sharp focus on who their ideal client is, why they want to work with them, and what value they're adding. I start...ed an Instagram Live Series as a way to quickly capture interesting conversations about business transformation. Unlike a podcast, what you see is what you get There's no post-production, no editing, no tweaking. It's warts and all! 21.01.2022 Ever revisit an old haunt and notice how everything looks a little smaller than you remembered? It happened to me today when I made a spontaneous trip to Northcote, the very-dog-friendly suburb I lived in when I first got Zoom. The park was less expansive, the cafes smaller. And the coffee waaaay stronger ... But I loved being back and got a bit misty eyed for the safety of the familiar. These past 14 months I've weathered a LOT: Moved house Had 4.5 different flatmates (one fell through after getting trapped by Covid in Tassie) Had two operations (my dog had 3, including one that was identical to mine!) Dabbled with a small-firm role that was an awful fit for my senior skills Returned to a great team in an old job (yay @pitcherpartners ) where we smashed huge rebrand goals Broke through 1000 followers after finding my niche on my personal Insta @opshopstylist Launched my own business and scored some fabulous clients Survived Covid lock-down in Melbourne I'm a pretty resilient person but the past year has really tested me That said, I'm a HUGE believer in never letting yourself stay static. I'm already excited for more new opportunities in 2021 - with a good dose of extra stability this time around ... for ALL of us.

20.01.2022 If I didn't have a brand and marketing consultancy, I'd own a retro motel like The Plainsman in Forbes! Who's with me?! Hello, New South Wales Zoom and I are on a road trip to Queensland along my namesake, the Newell Highway. Today is Day #1 of our epic 3 day adventure. ... We drove 7.5 hours from Melbourne with lots of stop offs at country towns along the way for , park walks and op shopping! I had planned to work en route ...but I overestimated just how tiring this would be ! It's 5pm and Zoom is already asleep.



20.01.2022 Victorian kids went back to school this week, and it got me thinking about the impact of my own education Primary school. High school. Uni x . Countless short courses. But nothing directly labelled 'marketing'! Yet I credit my formal and informal learning with influencing my pathway to become a rebranding expert. Why? 1. Space to explore & experiment. In Years 5 and 6, learning meant creating human boardgameprojects, illustrating science projects and writing novels. My... parents were so worried about my 'bad maths' they put in a special request for the strictest Year 7 teacher. I still finger-count to this day. And I the creative elements of my work! 2. Great mentors who pushed me beyond my comfort zone. My uni lecturer and first boss (I taught at Brisbane Girls Grammar School) encouraged me to present at conferences and speak in Canberra on future History teaching policy.Now, I always say to things that scare me. 3. Being taught how to learn. A Bachelor of Education taught me to critique everything, be curious about people, and seek out new . It was the best foundation for being a life-long learner who loves nothing more than going to a conference as a 'holiday'! What lessons from YOUR education got you where you are today?

"If I'm too outgoing, they will think I'm not serious enough to take on this responsibility." ... "If I'm too quiet, they will think I'm not ambitious enough to achieve these goals." What’s *really* in *your* business nature? There’s a lot of things programmed into my DNA that I don’t shout out loud on social media. If you’re my personal friend on Facebook, you’ll see that I am: Irreverent about authority Angry about injustice Determined to hold people and organisations to account for their actions Always poking fun at myself An advocate for equity of outcome, not equality of opportunity A champion of raising women up and encouraging men to do masculinity differently I’m also a crazy dog lady, a lover of anything someone else is throwing away, and a talented handy[wo]man. If you’re Clem Ford and your business is taking down the patriarchy, it’s okay to act in line with your personal values online and provoke, be quirky; be wholly ‘you’. But if you’re Michelle Newell trying to run a consulting business for professional services, it’s bloody unprofessional. Well is it? Who says so? Who are 'they' anyway?!?!? The challenger in me has taken the first step in breaking down some old-skool business boundaries by listing my true nature above. How about you? What do you hide from your colleagues and clients of yourself in business, because it’s ‘unprofessional’ or won't convey the right 'values'? What would happen if we all revealed just a little more of our true ‘nature’?

01.01.2022 I just hit 'delete' on over 2000 emails! How did you spend your first work day in 2021? Every new year is a clean slate and a fresh start - which means decluttering my physical and digital spaces so I feel ready to face the year ahead. I also spent the weekend cleaning out my wardrobe, even though I know I'll have my well-worn 2020 'lock down lounge wear' on high rotation again in 2021 ... I no longer make New Year's Resolutions. I just *know* I'm going to break them by Feb - and who needs something else to beat themselves up about, right? I've also stopped choosing 'words of the year', which I used to match with a colour. 2014's 'White Serenity' was the straw that broke the camel's back. For a hyperactive multi-project manager and vintage junk collector like me, trying to reign my natural instincts back in was exhausting. There's just one thing I'm consciously aiming to do this year, and that's CONNECT IN PERSON with more of you. So if you're in Melbourne, please get in touch for a coffee biz date.
