23.01.2022 Playground equipment brightens everyone’s day in Bendigo. Children and staff at the Shine Bright Kindergarten in Neale Street, Bendigo were delighted by the recent addition of playground equipment. The climbing ladder was constructed by NDIS participants at our Project Shed using the woodworking skills they have acquired through our Life Skills Development program. This project was a fantastic opportunity for our NDIS participants to work collaboratively to make something which benefits children in the wider Bendigo community.
22.01.2022 Theo has a passion for cooking and is always keen to try something new. Says Theo, I enjoy cooking. We go shopping, choose the recipe and start cooking. It’s fun. Theo has tried a wide range of recipes of his choosing since he began learning to cook with The Support People. We have supported Theo to try a variety of dishes - risotto, omelets, steak and vegetarian lasagna. And some yummy desserts too including rhubarb pie and pancakes. For participants like Theo who can’t... cook in their own home, we utilise the fully equipped kitchen at the Alfredton Sports & Community Club in Ballarat. We also work with people in their home using their own kitchen facilities. Our participants love planning their menu, shopping for the ingredients, and following the recipe to prepare food of their choosing. And feeling proud when they achieve a new cooking skill. See more
18.01.2022 Hi everyone, We would like to thank you, sincerely, for choosing The Support People, and showing the patience you have, in what has been a tumultuous year. There has, of course, been a great deal of disruption, challenge, and trauma in our communities. And our hearts go out, especially at this time, to everyone who has been adversely affected by the Covid19 pandemic.... When this pandemic started we began modifying our service delivery and work practices to keep everyone safe. It was a challenging time with some services being cancelled and many NDIS participants choosing to self-isolate. I am proud of the way our team rose to this challenge with flexibility, resilience and a caring heart, which enabled us to maintain business continuity for essential services and keep everyone employed. Our team has been truly remarkable. Of course, we could not have done this without the cooperation of our participants and their families. Time and time again, this year has reinforced for us the purpose of what we do. We’re committed to doing everything we possibly can to deliver supports to our NDIS participants with a sense of warmth and friendliness to empower them to live the life they want. Have a happy and safe holiday season and we look forward to talking to you in 2021. Regards Naomi Eddy CEO
07.01.2022 John gets his Learner's Permit thanks to the right NDIS supports Through his National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plan, 50-year-old, John Bartlett was able to engage Ballarat disability provider, The Support People, to help him get his Learner’s Permit. Now, after passing, he’s looking forward to becoming more independent. John, who has a mild intellectual disability, said his success came after missing two prior attempts at his Learner’s by just one point. Thankfully my support worker, Lorelle, worked with me at a steady pace. I didn’t feel rushed; we took our time, and she was really patient, so I passed, he said proudly.
05.01.2022 Trainees to support our NDIS participants in Bendigo Our disability support workers are core to the work we do. Every day they support people with a range of complex conditions to achieve their goals and to live the life they want. We value making a real difference to the lives of our clients. We are therefore looking to train and develop people who committed to quality support by putting our participants at the heart of everything they do.... Three of our Bendigo staff have taken the opportunity to further develop their knowledge by committing to a traineeship with The Support People. Milijana, Brydee and Andrew will be receiving on the job training as well as off the job training by completing a Certificate IV in Disability with our training partner TMG College. We look forward to seeing our trainees flourish in their roles, and in their career with The Support People.
04.01.2022 NDIS Community Access in Bendigo and its surrounding areas Our NDIS participants in Bendigo have been getting out and about in our bus for Community Access exploring a range of interesting locations. Recently, some of our participants ventured to a lovely place called Loki’s Lodge in Derrinal. Loki’s Lodge is an 80-acre property dedicated to looking after small farm animals in need of a new home. The staff at Loki’s Lodge were very welcoming and pleased to show our parti...cipants around. The experience provided our participants with an experiential education on animal suffering and cruelty within the agricultural industry. We look forward to developing an ongoing working relationship with Loki’s Lodge with the future possibility of NDIS participants doing some volunteer work if they are interested. See more
03.01.2022 We run a very successful group in Bendigo called the ‘Project Shed’. Originally this group was called the ‘Men’s Shed’ but it is open to everyone, so recently a decision was made to call it the ‘Project Shed’. The Project Shed is a place where everyone can get involved. A place to work on new individual and group woodworking projects whilst having a chat with others and making new friends. It is a place to put your woodworking skills to use or develop new ones. We encourage a focus on people’s abilities rather than their disabilities. There is a project for everyone. Participants are encouraged to complete as much of the task as they can on their own and are offered support and assistance when needed. Some of the projects they are currently working on are bird boxes, blanket boxes and bench seating for the garden.
03.01.2022 Wouldn’t it be cool to go sailing? Well, there is nothing stopping our NDIS participants from experiencing the thrills of sailing. We’re sailing they say. It is a magical feeling. The breeze filling the boat with life. Carried by a force unseen but feeling the slight list of the hull, the tension of the sails and the gentle pull of the rudder. Last week some of our NDIS participants had a great day out with Sailability, a not-for-profit, volunteer-based organisation which, through the activity of sailing, enriches the lives of people with any type of disability. Outings are essential for many of our NDIS participants to engage in the local community. The fresh air and adventure lifted spirits, promoted socialisation and gave everyone a welcome break from routine. ‘Fantastic’ would be the word to describe the fun time had by all.
02.01.2022 Re-establishing Community Access for our NDIS Participants With the easing of COVID19 restrictions, The Support People (TSP) team has been hard at work re-establishing community access for our NDIS participants. Recently some of our Bendigo participants visited Griffins Farm in Raywood to watch shearing in action. The farm visit was a wonderful opportunity for participants to get ‘out & about’ after months of COVID19 restrictions. Whilst visiting a farm to watch sheep being shorn may seem like a strange way to access the community; our program is participant directed and tailored to meet their needs and interests. Now that COVID19 restrictions have eased, we look forward to the coming months where we can plan more activities for people to continue to explore opportunities and be included in the community.
