25.01.2022 I was thrilled and a tiny bit intimidated to be invited to have a chat with two incredible women, Catie and Jade, who deliver the Futuresteading podcast. Whilst no stranger to having a chat - talking and eating are two of my favourite things - this podcast gently and ever-so respectfully encourages you to reflect on what drives you, what keeps you up at night, how you quiet the internal storm to find the fortitude to fight the good fight. So often in our professional lives we... hide pieces of ourselves behind talking points and a work persona, we value ourselves via our achievements, the highlights reel of our CVs. However, this podcast and indeed chat, chips away at this, and asks for vulnerability, honesty humanity. This conversation was cathartic in so many ways because it encouraged pause, during a pandemic that has caused upheaval across every facet of our lives. It’s always terrifying to put a little piece of yourself out into the ether, but here goes! Link below for my interview and so many more from the likes of, Milkwood, Brenna Quinlan, The Rogue Ginger, Granny Skills and Sallie Jones from Gippsland Jersey (to name a few). Settle in, grab a cuppa or pop the headphones on and head into the garden whilst you have a listen. Thanks, Cass x http://www.futuresteading.com.au

21.01.2022 It’s NAIDOC week and the theme this year is - Always Was, Always Will Be. To quote the website, ‘NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our ...sovereignty was never ceded.’ As a food-focussed not-for-profit, Sustainable Table acknowledges the confronting history of our colonial agricultural past. We seek to better understand our history and support discussion and work to build a more inclusive food system that works with and alongside Traditional Owners those with an intimate knowledge of Country and who sustainably managed the land for thousands of years prior to our violent arrival. Something that stayed with me since the wonderful Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance ‘virtual’ convergence this year, is that in order to move forward we must first remove the guilt and fear around saying or doing something wrong. No one has the single answer to heal this land and the many wrongs Traditional Owners have endured, instead, we must face into a sometimes imperfect dialogue in order to move forward. This NAIDOC week, Sustainable Table commits to a more inclusive approach to our work across all facets of the food system. We have a long way to go, but we must start. Today. 21.01.2022 This time last year we were rallying with thousands of others at the School Strike 4 Climate. Nothing like a pandemic to mess with your plans! But there’s also nothing like the keepers of our future to inspire hope for a better, brighter tomorrow... Today we came together for a mini ‘virtual rally’, in a show of solidarity for #SchoolStrikeForClimate. Let’s use this global reset to show our leaders we’d like them to fund innovative solutions to transition away from fossil fuels. Thank you for your incredible contributions and for caring about the future of our planet. #FundOurFutureNotGas #TheresNoPlanetB

21.01.2022 We are so sorry to have to inform all of our beautiful market goers and fair food crusaders that our very own Mt Martha Farmers' Market will not be going ahead in the short-term To our disappointment, and despite our best efforts, Mornington Peninsula Shire Council and Heritage Victoria will not grant us permission to operate on our existing site at 466 Esplanade with any more than 10 vehicles. Given the nature of the market and the need for stallholders to have vehicles wi...th them for cold storage and food preparation etc, this means it is not possible or viable for us to operate. We are frustrated and disheartened by the lack of support we have received, especially in light of how hard hit so many small producers have been during COVID-19 and how critical it is for markets like ours to be able to start up again to provide a safe, outdoor and ethical place to shop. We will continue to explore our options to re-launch the market in the future, however, we have now lost significant momentum, which has been really hard on our stallholders and our team. We will take a break over the new year period and reassess our options from there We’d like to thank you for your continued support and hope to have happier news in the New Year. In the meantime, Mt Eliza Farmers Market re-launches this Sunday and they’d love your support! the Market Team

17.01.2022 R U OK? This quote from one of my all-time favourite books struck me as more pertinent than ever, as we navigate a new way of existing together, apart. We are so conditioned to tell people we are fine, that we are okay, that there are people much worse off than us. But this dialogue is harmful and destructive and doesn’t allow space to validate and discuss our loneliness, our worries, our mental health challenges.... Today is R U OK?Day, a day to remind us all to start a conversation that could change or indeed save a life. Asking the question is one thing, being ready for an honest response is another. Head over to the R U OK Day page or website for wonderful resources to better equip you to be the friend, lover, family member that someone in your life may need you to be right now. Thanks, Cass x If you don’t know where to turn and need a safe space to discuss your needs, worries or concerns then please do call the wonderful folk at Lifeline - 13 11 14. #RUOKDay #theresmoretosay #RUOK https://www.ruok.org.au

14.01.2022 Our government is deciding how to spend public funds in order to rebuild the economy after COVID-19; as such, they're about to invest BILLIONS of dollars into the fossil fuel industry. Instead of providing leadership on how to create jobs for a cleaner and more vibrant economy and future, they're pouring more money into gas than any other industry... As you can understand, this is the most important budget in Australia’s history and as it stands with the potential spending, i...t is NOT ideal. BUT, there is still time to stop the government's dirty gas plans. We need to show them that Australians everywhere want them to #FundOurFutureNotGas! SO. As business leaders, as individuals, we have a chance to make a stand. This Friday, September 25, actions are happening across the continent and are being coordinated by School Strike 4 Climate ... we need need your help! Head to the link below to join the action with First Nations communities, school students and unions who are hosting actions in towns, suburbs, schools, and workplaces across Australia. We understand there's a pandemic, so this day of action is not about turning out big numbers, but about organising as many actions as bloody possible; virtually for those who have to, and in small 'CovidSafe' groups for everyone else. Link below, folks! Remember, there's #NoPlanetB https://www.schoolstrike4climate.com/buildourfuture

12.01.2022 Check out this practical guide on how you might go about reducing food and packaging waste. https://www.smh.com.au//a-zero-waste-life-starts-with-your

10.01.2022 What’s the deal with compostable containers? Can you chuck them in the green bin? Recycling bin?... Backyard compost tumbler? What if your compost pile isn’t quite up to the challenge, or you don’t have one at all? Cue #CompostableConfusion. While many councils accept AS4736 certified items (look for the little green logo) in green bins, others don’t. Compostable packaging is *not* recyclable (even though it kinda looks like it should be), so what do you do other than just bin it... ...perpetuating the very problems this eco-conscious product purports to solve? Here’s our approach: #1. BOW OUT -- Sidestep the packaging palaver by trying, as often as you can, to use your own containers, cups, reusable wraps and cutlery. This involves planning ahead, getting a ‘kit’ together, and knowing where to shop. But hey, we created a whole website around that. Dive in! #2. CONTACT YOUR COUNCIL -- Every jurisdiction has different rules and processes. Take the guesswork out of it by hopping on your council’s website or giving them a call to find out how waste works in your ‘hood. #3. BECOME A COMPOST CONVERT -- Starting a backyard compost is something your future self will thank you for, giving you the alchemical skillz to turn ‘home compostable’ items into garden gold. FINAL WORDS: The thing about packaging, eco or not, is that it requires resources and energy to produce. Crops or plantations. Processing and distribution. And while there’s some pretty innovative stuff happening in the waste space, for now, we like the jingly jangly sounds of our zero-waste kit -- always within reach as we walk out the door. Are you confused about how to dispose of compostable packaging? How confident do you feel with backyard compost? Let's have a chat in the comments. Image description : Our new team member Catie waist deep in a green bin wondering what she can put in there other than herself.

09.01.2022 Did you know that we’re heading towards a 2C rise in average global temperatures? If that happens, the collapse of warm water tropical reefs around the world, including the Great Barrier Reef is ‘almost certain’ (Climate Council 2018). So what are we doing about it?... Quite a lot, actually. Our Blueprint for Impact (authored by the awe-inspiring Tanya Massy) outlines the nitty gritty strategy of transitioning to regenerative agricultural systems in the Great Barrier Reef Catchment areas, which will have huuuuuge benefits for the reef (not to mention growers, eaters and the rest of ‘straya). If you’re up for a deep dive into food systems, regenerative farming and climate solutions, we highly recommend taking a look at this publication. Here for reef and regen ag chats after you've finished digesting. https://sustainabletable.org.au//Blueprint-for-Impact-Rege

09.01.2022 Here’s the full episode of tonight’s Australian Story on #RegenAg and the Massy family. Beautiful and enlightening viewing.

From 6:00pm AEST, we'll gather online for a powerful, action-packed event hearing from incredible speakers at the forefront of this fight, including First Nations people leading the defence against the destructive gas industry, workers who know that the jobs of the future lie beyond the fossil fuel industry, and students living in gas impacted communities.
